1-5 was written after the trilogy was done, so it's a bit different in a lot of aspects.

1-5 definetly feels misplaced in AA1, not because of its placement in the timeline - It's actually the single most logical place for it to be and helps set up AA2 - but rather it was written by Takumi post AA3 and this is reflected in its design and writing - It's a lot more complex than any other AA1 case by a far margin, but it also sticks out because AA1 is a nicely self-contained story with 1-4 being an outstanding climax to it all.

1-5 can't be the climax of AA1 because AA1 already had that in 1-4, but neither can 1-5 do too much because that might impede AA2.

It's still a solid case but I've never figured out why people suck its dick so much

They were all so tightly written with no filler and fluff. Then i get to this one and im constantly just going "why aren't they just telling me what i want to know?". This was the case that made AA click with me and go from being something I was lukewarm on to one of my favorite series. The build up is slow yes, and something I got frustrated with too, but the payoff is oh so worth it.

If it's any consolation it's by far the longest case in the original series so you won't have to put up with another one so slow for a long time.

I think it works best if you see it as extra content rather than its own standalone story. It had a lot of great character moments like that one (Larry disguising) and saw that something like 2-3 didn't really make sense so they had another writing pass, which REALLY helped that case.

Correct. They were mostly founded in the late 19th century, pic related here's a snippet of the book Frontier Cowboys and the Great Divide. Modern mounted police have obviously changed over time in appearance, and Marshall is a prime example of a character that would have loved to play the role of a police unit from the older era. Interpret it however you want, but Marshall has a thing for the wild west and has the profession of a patrol officer/detective. Where's the problem?
