For I hope the smartphone app is some shitty self-contained shit like magikarp splash. They could do so much damage to the series with a f2p AC. What I desperately want is for the town to be surrounded by a dense, explorable woodland. I want the woods to be so much larger than the town that you can get lost in them and the game would have to have a heavy focus on camping. You could gather shit in the woods similar to BOTW and take it back to town for selling/baking/crafting. You could also stumble upon random gifts, secret fishing spots, rare bugs, hidden characters and more stuff like that. Whenever in the woods you have to worry about survival mechanics (hunger, thirst, exhaustion, fear).
This is all optional gameplay outside the town. You could always stay inside the town and have a classic Animal Crossing experience.
Also, there's photography in the game as the new way to put stuff in the museum. And if you go the the beach you can play Wii Sports Resort style games.

My number #1 hope is more variation in villager dialogue, it's really sad how much their dialogue repeats in New Leaf. It's the main reason why I stop playing.
