The Lost Coast is supposed to happen around the time when Gordon travels along the coast to Nova Prospekt. Everyone knows Gordon by this point in the story, and multiple people are helping him along the way. The church has turned into a facility that combines use to shoot headcrab rockets out to town like ravenholm, there are no actual zombies in this area. The glass portrait of Freeman is an easter egg, which was mostly used during tech demos before the game's release to show off how glass works in the game. See this:

there is no real tech for hl3 anyway, we are still exactly the same spot we were when hl2 released, physics and shaders untill some ground breaking new tech gets made and its done by valve they just dont have the incentive to make it, the game has always been a tech demo first.

Think about it, he's a pretty handsome dude, but we have been with him every moment since his journey started,

He goes into work at Black Mesa, breaks reality a little bit, and fights his ways through the facility and Xen before before put in stasis for 20 years by the G-Man.
We know for a fact he fucks 0 chicks during this period.
He then wakes up from his 20 year nap in city 17, alone and unloved, before meeting the resistance and going on his epic journey of continuing to fuck 0 chicks all through the city, canals, ravenholme, nova prospekt and the citadel before exploding said citadel and being teleported away from the danger by the G-Man again.
The Freeman remains untouched in more way than one.
Thus begins his trek through episode 1 and 2. Keep in mind, at this point we have yet to have any time periods where we are not in control of Gordon, from his time entering black mesa to now, this man has not slept, has not ate(aside from a few vending machine treats), and has not stopped moving since this all began. This remains true up until the death of Eli Vance at the end of episode 2.
During this episode, BOTH of the Vance's were penetrated deep and hard, just not by Freeman.

That brings us to 'Epistle 3', which seems to continue the trend of Gordon never catching a break or getting a break, except now the G-Man decides to NOT teleport Gordon away, but instead teleports away his one chance to finally get lucky, leaving Gordon to his terrible, lonely fate. The vortigaunts do their Deus Ex Machina thing and teleport him to earth, once more leaving him in a 20 year stasis.

Gordon wakes up lying on a beach somewhere, around 40 years after his journey began. He never scored.

Well...that's not entirely true, The G-Man fucks him on a regular basis.

The general fan theory has been that while the combine are big and powerful, they are brute force thinkers.

They aren't very good at their jobs, they can sort of assimilate technology, but in the end it is a pale imitation. The teleporter in the Entanglement chapter is a good example, it requires a huge room, a long charge time, and their unlimited resources just to get a basic teleporter that some scientist in his shed managed to do with scraps.
