The way it has an overall human morphology is a little disappointing. At least it's not Trekkian brow ridge aliens, but it has four stubs at the same height as legs and arms would be, it has a chest fold that looks like breasts, it has a distinct cranium and eyes and mouth all with human placing. Has an anus with human-esque placement.

At the very least it shouldn't have those eyes, come on.

I always thought it was supposed to show how the advisor species used to some kind of large biped but as technology advanced, modified themselves to hell and back to enhance their psychic capability as much as possible, even at the cost of physical capability which could be negated anyway by telekinetic flight and sensory abilities
like how synths were normal xen creatures modified to unrecognizability

Breengrub's mercy killing by Gordon is so fascinating because it foreshadows Gordon's killing of humanity itself.

>After the Combine are forced out, Earth is devastated
>ecosystems irreparably destroyed
>majority of crops and farm animals killed off
>all freshwater lakes and the irrigation that comes with them have been sucked up and teleported back to the Combine
>ocean's have been sucked up to the point of lowering sea levels drastically
>humanity's sole food sources come from Combine welfare programs
>all progress relied solely on Combine super technology

By destroying the Combine, Freeman has destroyed any potential for humanity to reestablish itself. Breen was right all along.

And yet Freeman kills humanity anyway because Breengrub is a allegory for what humanity has become: an asymmetrical leech on Combine life support. Freeman in the end decided that a life without freedom wasn't a life at all.

>Well, if you'd like to reconsider your involvement in the program, Eli, it would make a huge difference in how quickly we could make the Combine portals safe for human use.
>That way, Alyx, and even yourself, might be able to travel to the Aleph Universe with your faculties intact.

So what would prevent Freeman from just going back in time and snagging the unstable sample with him, thus preventing the resonance cascade from happening?

If it wasn't for him the human race would have been wiped out.

Something I kind of find weird is how people were surprised by how powerful the Combine turned out to be in the Episode 3 story leak. They have the ability to travel across different universes, so even though they couldn't travel to other planets, due to their lack of local teleportation, I always assumed that they had bases in thousands, if not millions of different universes. Years ago, I used to think that the reason Episode 3 was taking so long was because Valve was trying to think of a way to defeat such a powerful antagonist without it being a complete ass-pull.

I know valve's main excuse for no HL3 was that they didn't have the ability to revolutionise the gaming industry like they did with HL1 and 2, but after reading that ep3 plot I honestly dont think valve needed to revolutionise with episode 3. Like, for people who are incredibly invested in the lore, that ending would have absolutely fucked with them. Even if they released a normal, source engine game in the style of the episodes, I still would've been shook for weeks after that ending. Like, we spent all this time working to overthrow the combine, theorycrafting about just how powerful the borealis is, getting immersed in the game, and then bam. It's all in vain, and gman has been playing you since the beginning. I don't work at valve but seriously I don't know why they couldn't just release the story of episode 3 as a simple 5 hour episode, the EXACT SAME as the previous two. The story was more than good enough

>>388411595

That is a shit excuse for many reasons. First, the episodic content. Either episode 1 or 2 revolutionized gaming or half life 2 for that matter. They were more of the same but with new ideas and set pieces.

Why couldn't Episode 3 be the same, another expansion with the same level of ambition of episode 1 and 2 is beyond my comprehension.

Second:
Left 4 Dead 2 and Portal 2. Either managed to completely revolutionize the previous game (L4D2 didn't that for sure) and yet, Valve so no creative issue with releasing/rushing such sequels to their new franchises.

I believe that, back in the day, Valve was too focused on steam, turning it into the monopoly it is today, Gabe too focused on that and not enough time to work on Episode 3 or Half Life 3. Priorities shift. Developing games no longer an important thing for valve, and instead, working on their digital store as the main project and income for Valve.

Years went by and now we reached a point where expectations for a Half Life new game are so high, Gabe is afraid of actually releasing another title, fearing that we would never achieve such expectations and, in the process, ruining the Half Life brand with what would probably be seen as a sequel that doesn't makes up for the years of waiting.

Half Life 3 will happen when Gabe leaves Valve.
>>
>>388412035
>Half Life 3 will happen when Gabe leaves Valve.

I don't think so, to be honest. The depressing truth is that all the micro-transaction stuff is way more profitable, and way easier to do, than big single-player game projects.

>>388411536
He was. Wether or not he was trying to preserve humanity he sold them out.
>>
>>388411595

>>
>>388411595
>>388412035
Any hope for Episode 3 to happen ended once people started calling it Half Life 3 instead. That put the pressure on Valve even further, and they couldn't just give us another 5 hour long adventure in the source engine.

Hopes for Half Life 3 basically ended 18 months ago when Mark left the company. Even if they make one down the line it wouldn't be the same without the main writer behind it. And it doesn't even look like they had Half Life 3 planned at all, seeing as all we got was the plot synopsis of episode 3, not Half Life 3.

>>
Release of HL3 would be the greatest happening in industry since forever and I don't think valve have the balls to make it happen.

I also think they don't have the slightest how to wrap up the story. Especially since Mark left.
>>

>>
>>388412609

That is the thing. Episode 3 could have been a thing with little to no hassle. Episode 1 and 2 didn't revolutionize shooters or Half Life.
They could easily make an Episode 3 with little fanfare and still conclude the Half Life 2 story and keep fans happy for that time.

It didn't need to be the second coming of jesus because Episode 1 and 2 weren't either.

The orange box was pretty much the nail in the coffin for this series. Portal and Team Fortress 2 became the more popular games so they stuck around making hats, Left 4 Dead 2, and Portal 2 instead. They mentioned during that time too that they wouldn't make any more games that didn't have some form of online feature.

Valve always ran on Valve time. People started being skeptical about Valve's ability to produce episodic content when they realized that the wait for Episode 2 took much, much longer compared to the waiting time between Telltale episodes. The forums I used to read back then are defunct and I can't show you conversations from there, but here's some random older link that I googled up:
https://www.geek.com/games/valve-to-reconsider-episodic-game-releases-568341/
The page discusses how Ep1 had been released by then, but judging by the long wait for Ep2, Valve's decision to go episodic didn't seem to be working out too well.

Episode 2 was eventually released in Orange Box, which was a pretty impressive bundle. I kinda stopped expecting Episode 3 somewhere around then. People at Valve are perfectionists who take their time because they want to one-up their previous accomplishments, and it would be very difficult for them to ever top Orange Box.

Just leaving him behind and taking Alyx as a replacement because of "betrayal" seems too simplistic and unplanned for a guy who is undeniably a major orchestrator.

Pretty sure it is a backup of his personality, basically cloning him as a grub. Kind of seems like the grubs work like a computer and can just directly ingest information, based on the supposed reason for eating Eli's brain. They just made a grub and injected Breen's mind into it. From their perspective, this is a pretty good outcome for a collaborator since they are literally joining the master race. It forces a loyal subject to remain loyal, as well.

>>388403958
Because they can't control the device and the Combine command center was apparently where it was going to end up in the future. It exists everywhere on its path at once so they could see it being inside their base in the future, they didn't actually drive it there to attack them. The plan was to explode it in a location where it already is.

long story short

Gordon and alex get to the borealis, time portal warping ship, Mossman wants to study it, Alyx angry about her fathers death says fuck that, goes full punished snake, makes Gordon and her ram it into the supposed combine base, they get there

it's a fucking dyson sphere [look it up] the explosion from this ship that was meant to save them won't be any effect, what so ever, it'll be like a matchstick going out against a wall, everything is meaningless blablabla the entire struggle was pointless and none of it mattered

also on the portal charge to borealis skipping through time Gordon sees past and future and the entire army of the Combine and realizes there LOWEST ranks were sent to earth which took it out and brought humanity to its knees in 7 hours. there is no hope for us and we fucked up, or, Alyx did.

also Cave Johnson is the saviour of humanity, technically.

Why would G-man keep fucking with Alyx? Surely he has done all the mischief he wanted? He is about to destroy the thing that threatened his species, a teleporting device, the borealis, given to the Combine, but now that's destroyed, and I can only imagine the entire human race with it. The fuck is he going to do with a single, meaningless human?
>>
>>388417094

I was under the impression that gordon stopped any chance of the combine returning to our universe in ep1-2, and that while there's no way he could stop their multidimensional empire, he stopped them from ever being an issue for humanity again once the remaining forces are driven off earth (and they were losing pretty badly by ep2)

That is the wrong impression. If the Combine wanted too, they would send there slightly higher ranks then the lowest ones they sent, and destroy every human of the face of earth, and if they really wanted to humiliate us, they would just send the top ranks, and we wouldn't even have a chance to say the word 'Dyson' before our DNA was turned into stardust.

Why didn't Gordon pilot the Borealis into the thermal exhaust port of the Dyson Sphere, starting a chain reaction which destroys it and brings down the Combine?
>>
>>388417874
I don't get why people are interpreting this. The destruction of the Borealis is important enough for it to be part of GMan's plan. The Combine were actively studying it, probably because they don't have access to time travel technology and wanted it badly. Gordon and Alyx's plan may not have worked from their point of view, but the whole theme of the entire series is that most of the shit you do is orchestrated by higher powers.

Nobody is actually quite sure what the fuck G-mans plan is, and we can only hazard a guess, but it is along the lines that he is working for a higher power, AGAINST the Combine, and he knows the Combine want that portal technology [the borealis] it doesn't matter how many eons ahead as a super society the combine is, inventing something like the portal transport is a 000000000000000000.1 chance and it just so happens humans did it. So in the end, if I have this right:
Gman dumps you for good.
Gman claims Alyx as his newest asset, for unknown reasons.
Gordon is saved at the last minute by Vorts, but is placed in an unknown place and time on Earth right before the game ends.
Combine is established as 99.999% truly undefeatable as they apparently dwarf the Warhammer 40K scale.
The one thing the Combine could want at this point, time control, is out of their reach for now. Though that mean humanity's last best hope is gone too.
Fate of humanity is uncertain, but probably safe for the time being.

Honestly, it's a great ending, though grim as hell. What does any of it mean by that point? I guess if there were to be a sequel, Valve could literally go anywhere they wanted.

Pic related, Gordon's god damn face through all of this.

What happens if we just got this ending, humanity lost, Gordon lost, it doesn't ALWAYS have to be a happy ending. It is honestly a god tier ending.

also, slight theory, plot twist

>vorts tele Gordon out of borealis at the last moment, realizing it is going to crash and not even scratch the surface of the combine base
>combine are prepared for the ship, somehow stop it using there advanced technology
>G-man was behind it the entire time, he got the humans to send and deliver to there front door, out giant portal gun technology to the highest bidder, wrapped up in a nice bow

>>
>>388421142
Xen is a borderworld between universes and it's inhabited by various refugee species that had to leave their worlds because of a Combine invasion. There are Nihilanthian species with multiple eyes and a third arm, the vorts, grunts, controllers and the Nihilanth. There are also Gargantuan species with 4 arms and a single eye, like the gargs and race X. Then there are various inconsistently looking animals like the bullsquids, gonarchs and headcrabs, icthycanthi, voltigores, and blind tentacles and the Geneworm.

>Evidence such as the ghostly laughs and screams of children that can be heard in the playground outside one of the apartments in the first chapter, a crying couple that can be seen shortly thereafter, the fact that the player does not see any children in the most human-populated areas, remarks by Resistance members such as "I'm glad there's no kids around to see this," and the presence of discarded toys such as baby dolls can be seen during the game, but they are only reminders of the past.
This is spooky
>>
>>388421142
Advisors are a species of giant telekinetic slug. The combine enslaved them by planting a pro-combine meme that spread and infected them via mental connection
>>
>>388421668
They harvested the resources of 6 entire universes to get enough paint to put that logo there and you call it silly.
>>
>>388421734
Good excuse to not have to model kids and make them invulnerable, tho
>>
>>388404337
they are not, their technical and biological evolution caused their now quite useless limbs to become stubby vestigial limbs. advisors possess telekinetic abilities, able to move their bodies and objects without the use of legs or the need of arms. they lost their own eyes over the eons because they did not use them anymore, they all have cybernetic augmentations, like their camera eyes, their hardware interfacing ports which connects them to their armored pods and their "clothes" which have additional anti gravity levitators to assist their movements. one of the advisors in ep2 used them at full power as it escaped from the barn, causing the roof to be sucked up in a gravity vortex as it took off.

they are not larvae, they are quite the opposite. it is something you would expect to happen with a species which possesses since eons psychokinetic powers and highly developed intelligence. ironically it looks like they devolved, but its just evolution getting rid of useless features.

>>388421908
Before the recent reveal of the combine's massive scale, it was more believable that they needed Earth's natural resources.

Now it's apparent that if the combine wanted, they could completely deconstruct planets for raw resources and that only after some appraisal, that certain technologies that only humans have developed are wanted, but have become difficult for the Combine to acquire. The combine could also, for whatever reason, want to keep Earth around, albeit modified. Human's as slaves and soldiers could also be desired, and were implied to be used in off-world missions.

A K2 level civilization can literally drag a star and use it's energy as a giant cannon to obliterate an entire solar system.

A K3 level civilization has 100-400 billion Dyson Spheres, and are basically gods

Ladies and gentleman, sometimes, you need to actually see the horror in front of your very eyes, get ready for this sentence, because for some reason, we're in this timeline.

Ep4/hl3 would have been out 5 years ago had they kept making the series and we would probably be up to portal 3 and half life 4 and left for dead 3 by now.

>all these excuses why it couldn't be done

it probably could've been done, but they should've have to listened to Mossman, and it seems that events have been manipulated in such and such way that Alyx was adamant about destroying the ship instead of preserving it for study

HL2 and 3 were basically "Gman: All According to Keikaku: the game"

Yeah, but the distinction is the people he's tricked and the people who share his goals. Eli believed the ship was too powerful and had to be destroyed at all costs.

The Borealis MAY have helped humanity wipe out the remainder of the Combine on Earth, but that was likely going to happen anyway without the Borealis allowing the remainders of the Combine on Earth contact their other universes. And if the Combine got their hands on the Borealis then that's it. The Combine have won ever battle ever from now to the end of every universe.

The Borealis really was their only sliver of chance against them and they should not have destroyed it. The Combine also would've won with or without the teleporting ship in their hands, so for Earth it didn't matter fuck all

The Advisors sucked the brain juice out of Eli. Who knew where the Borealis was
>>
>>388426850
The development of teleportation only needs a certain advancement of a species, it could of been ANY race, the creation of something like portals is 0000000000000000000000000000.1% and it was humans who did it. G-man foresaw all of this and his entire plan was to make sure his entire race were the only one who could traverse through time and space, playing chess the entire game trying to make Gordon destroy any hope of it getting into the hands of the combine or even humans keeping it.
>>

But thats not true at all, I think. Earth has tech the combine doesn't. Specifically inter-dimensional portal tech, whereas the combine relies solely on extra-dimensional portals, and must use regular tech to get around otherwise. Although, Earth portal tech only works because it uses Xen as an anchor I think, so I don't know how that tech would benefit the combine if it is useless outside of our universe.

In EP1 you're fighting to not die. In EP2 you're fighting to launch a rocket that prevents the Combine teleporting to earth. In EP3 you fight to secure a ship with a powerful technology so that the stranded combine forces on earth won't gain an upper hand. At no point the destruction of the combine was even considered.
