Now that the dust has settled, actually blown into space and has developed new planets:

Was it really that bad?
>>
>>388399969
No, but it was definitely overhyped.
>>
>>388399969
It set out to be exactly what it wanted to be. Plus, the dev is based.
>>
>>388399969

>was it that bad

Painfully mediocre. After you've seen the jumpscares it boils down to simple tedious management. All it really gets are style points for being a spooky chuck e cheese.
>>
>>388399969
It was practically a newgrounds flash game that drew in tons of autistic kids because every e-celeb in the world had at least one video on it.

There's nothing even that creative or interesting about the lore, characters, or story. Hell it's not even scary. It was mediocre at best and full of cheap jump scares.
>>
>>388399969
I gotta commend Scott for busting his ass and making fucking 5-6 games in the period of like 3 years to milk the meme for all the money its worth. I think most people would have called it a day at the first game and set up a Patreon to leech off.
>>
>>388399969
I thought the first game was cool,i enjoyed it for what it was.

But its hard to be scared by a game that has normie merch everywhere.
>>
>>388400706
I guess i don't blame Scott hes swimming in money because of it.
>>
>>388400785
Nah, the dude did the right thing. He milked it for all its worth.

He just happened to make shitty meme games that normies, furfags, autists, and children could all latch onto and throw money at. If I could draw good all I would do is take commissions to make furry pictures and I fucking hate furry.
>>
>>388399969
Initially novel game that quickly spiraled way beyond what should've been its scope, but continues even further for reasons I can't fathom.

I was in line at the DMV and there were some kids waiting in line with their dad behind me that were actually talking about Freddy Fazbears. Like actual 8-10 year olds.

Seriously, what the fuck. This was like around the start of this month.

This shit is why fnaf is cancer. Sonic and MLP get made fun of but fnaf generated insane amounts of autism in an extremely short amount of time. I burst into treats the first time I heard a friend say they wanted to yiff Foxy.
>>
>>388403089

It isn't, you just have down syndrome.

>>388399969
First game had that kind of subtle storytelling I fucking love, and I could forgive the lacking gameplay for that.

I hate Scott for having each successive game answer the questions of the plot in a really unsatisfying way, progressively making the series less interesting. I talk about impassionate artists because they're really a pet peeve of mine, but I don't know what I would do if I knew I could make the kind of money he does desu

The first game? No.
The sequels, yes.

If you're going to focus more on story, at least make sure you can tell a decent goddamn story. Not only does he fuck up the horror, but each game's story is a mess.
Even 3, which is the most thematically sound sequel in the series, suffers from this.
>>
>>388399969

I hate how bread-crumb muh-implication storytelling creates autistic fanbases. It was fine when one or two games did it but almost every indie game does it now. In recent memory, Rain World and Hollow Knight. Every goddamn game needs a stupid wiki page, it's like the storytelling version of "procedural content." Fuck if we can't be bothered to really buckle down and tell a focused story, we're just going to put down a few props and imply something and then back away going "oOo, the implications, check out how deep our story is." Undertale, at the very least, told a story that was handbuilt from 0 to 100 that was clear and concise. Not to say that games can't do the vague storytelling bit well, Hollow Knight was pretty good about it, but FNAF was not. Quite frankly, the mystery should have ended with 3, but he just kept on adding onto the mystery over and over and over again and people just lap it up.
>>
>>388404534
I like how Hotline Miami did it where all the revelations of 2 fit in nicely with the first game's story.

FNAF's biggest problem with it's narrative is that it relies on plot twists and retcons. Scott Cawthon took a creepy little horror game, and threw all of that out in favor of making something Game Theory would continue talking about.
It's not even a "muh implication" fanbase. The fans seem to have some bizarre obsession with banal plot twists.
>>
>>388399969
It's another example of how stupid customers are. They basically sold the same game 3 times with different reskins

I can't believe that it took a single man two years to make a universe more self-contradictory and bloated than Star Wars did in it's 40 years of existence with hundreds of writers.

I don't really care because he gave all the money he made to charity.

An interesting idea that's been milked so much that only dust comes out of the udders.
I don't blame Scott for milking it, I'd do the same for those sweet shekels.

Getting mashed into a suit makes you possess it. Except when it doesn't. The dev introduced a special animatronic that's required for people to re-animate as the robots, and then forgot about him for the rest of the games.
>>
The first game was excellent and a really good take on the horror genre.

The rest was all cash grab bullshit.

They're decent for what they are, and the concept is novel. The fact that the series toys with horror tropes and subverts normal horror gameplay is unique for the most part.
>>

That's total horseshit, what other horror-related media uses haunted Chuck-E-Cheese animatronics filled with the corpses of children as the main object of horror?

All the games are "decent" at the very least if not good, the first being the best combination of atmosphere and aping off Night Trap. It sadly suffered from the same flaws of Night Trap where to be efficient at the game you had to kill its atmosphere and ironically Night Trap was trashed in reviews back in the day for this but FNAF got a pass. Really great fucking use of sound and mood though, even the little clanks in the rooms were great sound directing.

They're also the definition of overrated to hell and the deepest lore is just there to fuel the fanbase. If I had Scott's opportunity to make an entire franchise that has toys in every store competing with damn Disney's shit I'd go for it too though.

1 was pretty fresh and 2 made it even better, degraded after that due to literal fanbase of children. like others have said, when you get over the scares it can just be tedious recourse management.
>>
>>388399969
I don't like the gameplay in these games, but I like how Scott made one of his weaknesses into a complete success. Also, I don't get the complaint about how fast he makes these games. If it was sold in an episodic format (which it pretty much is) no one would have complained.

Also TDH is pretty dope.

Despite not being anything special, it was a decent idea and it made for a pretty fun game. It just attracted an awfully autistic fanbase that overhyped the shit out of it and caused it to get too many pointless sequels.

I bet the guy who made it doesn't mind all the autism dollars it made him though.
