8E is basically a big sandbox where nothing happens without player input, and the AI (allied or enemy) is completely ineffective at accomplishing anything. It's good for making "Lord OC DONUT STEEL conquers waifus and China" campaigns, and not much else.

That being said, actual battles are really fun if both sides are evenly matched, and your character isn't overpowered by high stats/levels or OP weapons.

Also, I really hate how many characters are fujoshi-bait fuckboys in this series now. It makes it hard to take them seriously and its a disservice to the actual characters. Even senior officers who were active into their 50s and 60s are portrayed as 16 year old bishies. Even old characters suffer from it sometimes. Sima Yi was active all the way up to his death at age seventy fucking two but he is a smooth-faced 20-something in the games.

The open world does look quite empty which is a worry.
As for the combat. I still need some official clarificatin on how the combos will be linked and the reaction trigger (is it like Batman Arkham's counter moves) but the idea that you can branch off to different combos by pressing the R1 with one of the other buttons and that there's the definite combo starter and an ender, means at least I can say is already looking better than DW6's renbu which was literally just pressing square and then triangle once you got the meter up.

The what-ifs were kind of a let down. I'd like to see them expanding, so rather than a checklist opening up a new bracket, it's more like a sandbox-ish web. So you have the regular timeline, and then NG+ you unlock hypothetical mode where you have more control over things (executing officers, your own officers getting saved/killed, possible 3 way battles and alliances that never happened, etc.)

Zhenji is only there to blow Cao Pi and in the DW universe is only relevant to probably 2 stages and only when Cao Pi is around so she literally has no character outside of "I love Cao Pi he is mine and I'm only for him". She's a blue Bao Sanniang.

Cai Wenji is a wasted add who is around for probably 1 stage and does literally nothing. She was historically a poet and daughter of a famous official. She was kidnapped by barbarians, forced to marry their leader and have two of his kids. She was later released after Cao Cao negotiated with them and she left ASAP, leaving her two kids behind. None of this is referenced in the games aside from a quick glossing over so what's the point.

Wang Yi is probably the only person who is okay. She actually fought in some battles, has character and fun moveset. They gloss over most of the horrible things that she endured but they outside say that Ma Chao was the cause of it all which is a positive. The only thing that offsets it is that Ma Chao doesn't even react or acknowledge her. It's almost like Koei needed to acknowledge how horrible of a person he really was but then backpedaled and put their heads in the sand because his real life counterpart ruins his DW character.
