You guys think Valve might ever sell the IP? I mean, there are loads of rich game companies out there who would love to have, since they would love to have a ip that people crave so much. And since Valve is just sitting on it...

It's probably that the Combine let it happen to really grind the boot into humanity, or it's too small and insignificant that it either doesn't get picked up on detection systems or just literally a rustbucket to them.

>>388393910
Theres a reddit thing, one of the sub forums where they are. Dreams if hl3 i think.

>>388393782
The Combine seem to miss the little things, which explains how the Resistance is able to exist or put up any sort of fight at all seeing as their opponents have so many resources and numbers at their disposal. I'm sure no one thought to install little mounted turret lasers on the outside of the thing.
>>388393761
I dunno, someone said Gordon could start monologuing about the whole scenario. Of course, that violates the whole "show, don't tell" principle, but if it's an iconic character speaking for the first (and presumably last since he's basically removed from the series after this point) time, I could see it working

How is a Dyson sphere even a thing?

It would need to be at a distance where it would not melt from the immense heat of the sun, which means Its magnitude would have to cover the span like a 50+ sun circumference.

Secondly, Gordon and Alyx would be suffocating in space as they road the ship into the Dyson sphere, if they werent already burnt alive by the extreme heat of the sun via proximity.
>>
>>388394307

>>
>>388394307
>Secondly, Gordon and Alyx would be suffocating in space as they road the ship into the Dyson sphere, if they werent already burnt alive by the extreme heat of the sun via proximity.
I would imagine that the borealis would have some kind of field around it that'd protect them.
>>
>>388394307
Gordon also should have suffocated when that giant fan at black mesa pinned him against that ceiling grate.
>>
>>388393605
The point of the Borealis being so displaced in time is that Gordon essentially saw his future self flying into the sphere and exploding at the same time as he saw the massive expanse of the sphere from far away. He saw himself die and the ship's explosion meaning literally nothing, but the vortigaunts yoinking him out of the ship prevents that.
>>
>>388394307
>It would need to be at a distance where it would not melt from the immense heat of the sun, which means Its magnitude would have to cover the span like a 50+ sun circumference.
It won't melt close to the sun if it's made out of a futuristic material that won't melt close to the sun.

Good question. I imagine that's an engineering problem the builders of a dyson sphere would have figured out.

A sphere large enough to extend beyond the Earth's orbit would be so massive that the shadow the Earth casts upon the interior of the sphere would have almost no effect on energy collection.
>>
>>388395204

The fully enclosed sphere is a meme propagated by TNG, an ackshual Dyson Sphere is a Dyson Swarm of trillions of solar panels and space habitats. With a few thousand km of space to avoid collisions, such a swarm wouldn't limit the Earth's intake of energy as the sun is Xbox hueg.

A civilization that can feasibly create a full shell Dyson Sphere is one that can not only synthesize building materials directly from the sun's mass, create artificial atmosphere and gravity on an AU-wide scale, but also has the capabilities to manufacture something on that scale.

KardashevScale_v8.jpg

It's meant to paint a bleak picture that everyone knew, but was too afraid to admit.

Humanity can't defeat the Combine. They lost the war in 7 hours for a reason. In the grand scheme of things, Earth is merely one more planet for them to colonize and subjugate. The higher-ups of the combine probably don't even know it exists or what is even happening because they have endless advisers and subordinates that even those "low-ranking" members of their "society" are given tasks like taking over planets, or perhaps even entire galaxies as a "rite of initiation" or political power.

Earth might just be a result of some Combine higher-up trying to climb a political ladder in his own God-like society.

We cannot even begin to understand the nature of their species, we stand no chance of ever destroying them because they're literally beyond us by a few types on the Kardashev scale.

Gordon realizes this in the epic crescendo as he catches a glimpse of the vastness of the Combine while traversing time and space itself. Alyx still does not realize this, and G-Man understand that he's better off exploiting a fresher, more gullible mind. Freeman knows too much of the true nature of things.

That even if they steer the ship in a bombastic display of courage and sacrifice, in the grand scheme of things, it'd be like shitting on the front lawn of a house, one of millions on a single planet, of a society of being that have millions of planets like this, with millions of houses, with millions of lawns.

Resistance is pointless, and everything else, with it, too.

It would of been the greatest gaming twist in video game history, and would of been fucking majestic to behold in front of us, that utter feeling of pointlessness sinking in and realizing everything we did up to that point, it didn't matter. We're but a speck of dust to the combine, a chess piece, they don't even know we exist. GLORIOUS.

The Combine soldiers in particular are just the Combine delegating the task of occupation to the conquered locals; it's not like they started creating Combine soldiers before they had conquered humans to convert into them.

For a human analogy, it's like if an advanced civilization with machine guns conquered a primitive tribe that fought with sticks, and then handed out some sharper sticks to some of the conquered left in charge to run things.

Honestly, presentation was one of the best aspects of HL2. Atmosphere, graphics, pushing their engine to the limits, etc. The gameplay wasnt that amazing and the story, although cool, is there only to drive the game.
Just to make the cool looking set pieces from the end of the game (the non-euclidean borealis and the space travel including megastructures), it would take a decent team years, and it probably wouldnt be as polished as you think.
Remember that black mesa project had an entire basis (the original game) and they couldnt make justice to the crazy environments that is Zen, which would be nothing compared to the ending of epi3

No? Why does this scene hold anymore significance than other scenes?
Like Rapture's reveal in BioShock
Or Final Fantasy VII's big reveal?
Or the end of Red Dead Redemption?
Or the end of Walking Dead Season 1?
Or Dom's death?
Or Shodan's reveal in SS2?
Or Would You Kindly?
I could go on and on and on.
What would make this scene so special? It's not even something that was being built towards.

You fuckers need to relax. Yes, I get it, Half Life Episode 3's story was revealed. Re-fucking-lax. It was alright. A decent script. So what? It's barely even video games in its current form.

They wanted instantaneous teleportation. The black mesa incident indicated to them that earth might have that tech. They invaded. Eventually realised earth had none of that shit after occupying the planet for years. They stop caring.

In Episode two you cut off comms with the combine so they don't know about the borealis which would've given them what they were after

They are defending it, just the lowest of the lows who are assigned such a task, you are basically cavemen battling the slaves of an intergalactic species. This utter hopelessness falling upon realizing that the borealis, the greatest thing that humans accidentally created, was rusted junk that did not do shit and could not do shit to the dyson sphere they had. It would have been the most hopeless moment a video game has ever made a player. Understanding that the human race was dead, Dr. Breen's plan to make humanity slaves rather than die out was the best idea and he did nothing wrong, And Gordon Freeman made a contract with the G. Man and the contract now goes to Alyx.

Here's an idea to kick around:

What if destroying the borealis wasn't so insignificant?

The only known working teleportation device that doesn't require a fixed end, which can also go through time, is destroyed. Not only delaying the combines progress in conquering other systems, but also allowing the humans time to dig through the remains of aperture to find any documentation on how to finish it properly.

HL3 (because this was HL2 episode 3) could revolve around the humans finding plans for the borealis and assembling a force of enslaved races to overthrow the combine.

No, it's a reference to the fact that a dyson sphere, a solid object completely encompassing a sun, presents such an enormous technological and engineering problem that any civilization capable of building one would be so far advanced that they would no longer need to build one.

A Dyson net still collects all of the energy of the sun, but is not a solid object making it an order of magnitude easier to make and more practical.

Think about it this way: The Borealis was able to dimensionally travel with a single device on the ship itself. Just there, self-contained. picked up and flung across the universe with the simple reprogramming of one who wasn't even around the thing. Now think about the Combine's way on to Earth.

A massive portal in the sky, a complicated infrastructure supporting it, spires and power generators and advisers having to oversee it all. They weren't looking for local dimension space-time travel; they were looking for convenient space-time travel.

You could fit a bootstrap device to any ship in their fleet and have that ship able to hyperspace anywhere it needed to, any time, any how. It would've slapped them from K2 to K3 much, much faster.

I thought I did. My dad read tons of sci-fi books and he told me a dyson sphere was a sealed spherical structure that was meant to warp reality using quantum bullshit that was possible because they were completely sealed off from the outside. Like space the inside of the sphere would work differently the rest of the universe.

He also accidentally taught me to start in 3rd gear for like a month when I was learning to drive stick. What the fuck dad

A Dyson Sphere doesn't necessarily have to be a sphere surrounding the star. It can be any kind of structure around a star.
Halo's Halo Rings are Dyson Spheres, for example.

No. The definition is that it completely surrounds a star to harness its energy. There are other massive structures that are not Dyson spheres. Also the Halos are to small for that.

Halos go around planets though. I didn't pay enough attention to the series so I don't actually even know what their purpose is, if it's not too generate energy it probably doesn't count as a Dyson Sphere.
>>
>>388395885
It's this exactly.

It's the equivalent of a pissed off squatter driving his car into the local council office in protest for them oppressing the tenants of the building they've taken over, thinking that it will destroy the Government. It might be noted on some report somewhere higher up the chain but I doubt it'll even be noticed. I think it's a great twist. I always thought that the Combine were far more powerful than was let on, with Breen talking about their domains near the end of HL2. Their garrison on Earth is literally just the lowest of the low made up of a few autonomous units and enslaved locals.

I love how even the Combine being a what, tier 2-3 of the Kardashev Scale, still haven't invented teleportation, the portal gun. because making transportation is a 0000000000000000000.1% and it just happened to fucking happen with humans. Cave fucking Johnson is unrionically the saviour of humanity if we can use the tech correctly and not get it stolen--never mind Alyx got angry cus daddy died and now destroyed the borealis with Gordon freeman on it cool thanks nice one alyx

The humans in Blame! had the power of gravity particles to create unlimited energy.
That's how the builders keep building, they have the unlimited energy from the gravity furnaces with which they create matter and keep building.
At this point, having a dyson sphere is pointless.
>>
>>388398843
>why do they need the Earth's water

While that was only really talked about explicitly in the HL2 beta version, really it just shows how powerful they are. They don't even really need the water, they just don't view Earth as even important enough for the effects of draining its water to be considered relevant.
>>
>>388397847
>that part of the story probably wasn't even thought up by then?
Except it was, originally Gordon Freeman was to be named after Freeman Dyson and another french physicist - only the Freeman part stuck.

He is literally named after the guy who coined the phrase of Dyson Sphere
>>
Dyson spheres/swarms are used to simulate matrioshka brains and trillions times trillions of conciousnesses, you scifilets. The scale of their civilization is such that anything outside their dyson spheres is ultimately meaningless
>>
>>388403725
I like to the imagine that the Combine's entire motivation in the HL2 games is just a local bureaucrat seeing in the teleportation technology the possibility of being promoted, so he refuses to call in reinforcements until shit gets real so that he can be the one that gets the tech, and gets moved up the chain to Combine Nexus 4485.

>>
>>388403958
Linking this post because this is the bigger thread.

That'd be a helluvan ending in it of itself if you think about it. Imagine making the decision to go back in time using the Borealis when the Combine were whatever primitive they started off as. Just a bunch of things huddling in the dark like humans once did. Afraid of their equivalent of saber toothed tigers. Then this orange guy and asian black chick show up, they've never seen anything like them before, and the player just slaughters them. Completely removing them from existence.
>>

>>
>>388391568
I actually found out about Dyson spheres just a few days before Epistle 3. Funny how that works.
>>
>>388404192
Sounds more like the Void trilogy from Peter F Hamilton. House of Suns seals off Andromeda, but the Void is a spherical construct in the center of the galaxy that eats stars to power space inside that can be manipulated through telepathy and telekinesis.
>>
>>388404254
That's not how gravity works Anon. The sphere is orbiting around the sun, spinning. Anything that breaks would just continue orbiting the sun.
>>
>>388404225
>when was the borealis mentioned outside of Portal 2

It's a massive part of Episode 2's story.
>>
>>388404202
And they accidentally create the combine by giving them tech in a very early stage.
There was a Heinlein story somewhat similar to this.
>>
>>388404294
Anon a sphere can only rotate around a single axis

Imagine a ball spinning from left to right

If the top were to collapse the entire thing would be sucked into the sun as it's now moving upwards

>>388404294
that is not how rigid body dynamics works, anon.

Admittedly though, a sphere is way more stable than a ring. With that in mind, though, keep in mind that there is no restoring force on a ring-like structure around a gravity well when one side invariably begins to drift towards the center.

the combine as a race do not exist because they went exctinct, whats left is a desperate atempt to go back in time and save themselves by using other races as a instrument, this is why they go to the earth because the borealis has this tech

since they are dead they cant create new technology they can only use the tech of other races to survive
>>
>>388404873
The motive is likely if they conquer and maintain a hold on all universes forever, they can ensure an endless and immortal existence.

Having DIRECT transportation via portals instead of whatever less precise/accurate methods they use currently could mean making a portal for seemless travel from point A to point B 60000 trillion light years away, ensuring shit like the cutting off of the combine forces on earth from the combine main forces never happens again.
