Also, the lack of enemy variety really hurts Horde mode. Gears 3 was pretty much better in every way except for gunplay.

I'm excited to see what Coalition does with 5. 4 was very much a Force Awakens type situation where it played it too safe and leaned too heavily on classic material for its own good but they nailed the mechanical and gameplay aspects if not the new enemy designs and a sort of stale story. I expect they'll take more risks with 5 now that they've got one title under their belts.

I really enjoyed the original Gears trilogy, but lost interest beyond that. Beneath all the dudebro machismo, there was some decent writing. It's hard to not like Dom and Cole. The slowly unfolding mystery of how things became so fucked was pretty compelling, and they did a good job with their cliffhangers. The ruined neoclassical-esque architecture of the upscale city areas gave a real sense of fallen grandeur to the atmosphere of the games, a feature that a lot of my favourite games share. Even little things like the sound effect when you pick up cog tags was just so good. I'd love to explore a world like that again, but from a different perspective. Something like Gears world + Stalker gameplay would be amazing.

Is it weird I prefer the graphics of original Gears to the enhanced edition? It seemed more horror oriented and the updated graphics just didn't do it for me.

2 has always been my absolute favorite because of the fucking incredible chain of setpieces. You've got the epic assault in landown, the GIANT WORM, Tai's death, the creepy asylum place, the infiltration of the locust mountain, Maria's death and the final push to defend Jacinto. Just one great sequence after another

imo gears is at it's best when it's a hopeless fight against an enemy that vastly outnumbers you rather than a horror slasher which some of the games tried to do
