The point is that the Combine is many times larger than Gordon or any of the Resistance dared to imagine in their worst nightmares. It's the realization that the regime they have been so desperately struggling against on Earth could hardly even be considered their janitors.

One planet, one sun, one galaxy, one universe, it's not enough, the combine always need more. The combine doesn't exist so some fucking bigshot alien can get a new palace, the combine exists to grow, consume, conquer and combine. As long as there's an unclaimed pebble floating in a universe somewhere, the combine will not rest. When they've conquered all the dimensions of the multiverse, they'd probably find a way to make some more.

>>388370732
It's so sad to see that we will never see this as a game.
They went for something that others wouldn't dare - you losing in the end.

That's why ME3 sucked so hard because it was a cliche we win with a superweapon against the way more powerful enemy. Why not just having a bitter ending?
>>
>>388374580
because if there's no scope of the combine's reach there's always room for a victory, and thus another game

the writer wanted to get across that 3 was never happening, and what better way than to completely demoralize the protagonist by showing him how insignificant the human race is compared to their enemy?

There is enough mass in 1% of the sun to make a dyson sphere several times over. It's not impossible to capture solar material at all. It just takes a lot of time and people. Similar to building the great wall of china vs building a wall of rocks .
>>
>>388373413
And oxygen is the most abundant material on rocky planets. Most hydrogen that isn't in gas giants or the sun gets blown away, but oxygen sticks around planets because it's heavier and because it combines with shitloads of things, like iron.

Why do you even care?

Half life was a linear, cinematic, scifi based FPS. So is Halo. However, Halflife comes off as one of those bad Halo knockoffs "early Far Cry and Killzone" even though it's first game predated Halo in the 90's, or as I like the call it "the time when there were no good FPS's".

Halo got 3 games because it was a good series that did the linear cinematic scifi FPS correctly with interesting characters, interesting lore and good SP and MP.

HL died because the only people who really liked the originals were privledged white kids who could afford gaming rigs way back before they were accessable and treat "liking halflife" as if its a privledge status like owning a mazarati.

Fuck off with this sob story.

The tradjedy still remains of what valve did to the L4D with L4D2, not your crappy boring FPS.
>>
>>388376369
And how do you keep it in place around the star? It wouldn't be bound by the gravity and would need constant adjustments as the star moved through space.

>>Living on the INSIDE of a Dyson sphere

And? Nothing weird about that. If you need a place to live that's bigger than a hundred billion planets but fits in one convenient solar system, that's totally a way to do it.

>>388376006
I like how some idiots always assume that all science has already been invented by humans living right now. There's an infinite number of possible discoveries that would enable this shit. You're one of those people who went THERE'S NO WAY PEOPLE CAN FLY, IT IS PHYSICALLY IMPOSSIBLE in the 1800s.

Ork chatter outside the galaxy is just from Orks who landed on the really far out planets that are basically in deep space.

Also, the nids can't be that big. The art works make it look like they're as big as a fucking galaxy. There's no way that's possible.

It's known that the Combine are currently in a war with another unknown force that we haven't seen yet, and Laidlaw's plot seems to imply that G-Man is a third party trying to end this war by removing ALL methods of teleportation from the universe. The Borealis was a big one, and removing it from the equation also removed Gordon's usefulness (but not Alyx's). He disposes of Gordon, but the Vortigaunts step in and save him with their own time/space manipulation, setting up a Half-Life 3 where we learn the truth about G-Man and potentially end the series for real.

>>
>>388379329
what the fuck are you talking about
>>
>>388379138
The leaked plot implies that he's trying to remove all sources of time/space manipulation and teleportation from the universe and end the ongoing war between the Combine and another unknown force. For the last fucking time it's not the full ending to Half-Life, it was just supposed to be episode 3. That's why it ends with another cliffhanger. It doesn't end with YOULOSELOL since it was intended to set the story for Half-Life 3.

No, Episode 3 is what was actually planned to follow Episode 2. The wait became so long that the idea of a Half-Life 2: Episode 3 coming out was ridiculous, so people began asking for Half-Life 3 since that was the most logical thing now.

You seem to have a fundamental misunderstand of what the Combine are and what they do. They are not your typical Alien Invaders who fly around space causing trouble. They are an entity capable of traveling to alternate universes, and their goals are total subjugation of everything they can touch. The singular reason that they don't wide out humanity on day one is that we possess technology they don't, the ability to teleport in-universe. If it wasn't for that they would have just strip mined Earth and moved on.

If you are talking a planet thick literal shell then yes, that is ridiculous. That all there is though, you can just swarm solar panel equipped satellites around the entire star and you are golden, we could do that right now given enough time and dedication.

John Freeman taking down the Combine is the canon ending to the Half Life series.
>>
>>388383629
>we could do that right now given enough time and dedication.

No, we absolutely could not.
>>
>>388383628
The citadels are basically siege and occupation machines. They're teleported in and house most of the army garrisons of the combine, which then flood out and directly conquer population centers.

The combine is so massive earth is a footnote of a footnote to them. Even if they can get water elsewhere, they use human soldiers as infantry support. All the combine aliens (strider gunship etc) used to be aliens and are now cyborgs in their armies. There's no loss for the combine to just shit out some citadels on earth and every few years send some soldiers and water back home.
>>
>>388383795
Name one thing stopping us. We can build solar powered satellites, and we can put things into orbit around the sun. All we need to do is build enough of them, which is just a matter of scale not technology.
>>
>>388383206
Not to mention the time it would take to do so would be in the billions of years, and the amount of material it would take to make ONE would strip the material out of millions of solar systems. By that time, your star is well past its prime.

>>

Not enough materials to make the satellites or put them into space. If we had better methods of getting into space then we could maybe mine some asteroids for materials.

This includes the hard-to-access cores of the gas giants; the inner planets alone provide only 11.79×1024 kg, enough for a 1-AU shell with a mass of just 42 kg/m2.[14]
the combine can literally burn holes between universes, some wacky ultrathin nanofibre material would be childs play to them
>>
The Combine are a type 5 civilization, it's entirely possible that they could harvest enough resources to build a few miles thick Dyson sphere around a star.
>>
>>388384136
We can land on asteroids, so mining them is a small step from there. We can just assume that we can do that.
>>
>>388383628
>Neptune is pretty close to earth, so why did they go through the effort of conquering Earth which is a rock with some water on the surface?
How do you know that they didn't take Neptune as well? They could be really desperate for resources, sure they can make a dyson sphere but doesn't mean they'll always have limitless resources.
Keep in mind that they're from a different universe all together as well and the only reason they could access this one was because they abused the portal storms from the resonance cascade.

The scale refers to ability to harness energy. Hopping between dimensions doesn't make you a Type 5. >>388384136
