Was Pokey a tragic villain?

No.
No he was a fat asshole.
No, he was a complete asshole with total disregard for anything but his own selfish desires.
You could make the argument that all he wanted was to be Ness's friend which is why he pulled these crazy stunts to get Ness to notice him, but that just ties back into him being incredibly selfish.

He's probably the least sympathetic villain of all time.
Literally just an irredeemable sociopath.

He had zero good intentions, so no.
You can be tragic and still an asshole. I'm sure that his parents were absolutely shitty to their kids, but Picky turned out pretty chill so there's no real excuse there.
When I played EarthBound the first time I really wanted Pokey to get his shit together and help out at the end, and do what he did in the tutorial level except also be helpful. It would have been good character development, even if he just threw rocks at Giygas and offer moral support in the past pit of madness.
But he didn't. He pussed out on the adventure he saw before him and used both sides to set up his own rise to power.
The tragedy comes in 3, where there are hints of his regrets here and there, alongside his ultimate fate.

Pokeys fate really hit me for some reason. Sure he was absolute scum of the earth and then some in M3 but does anyone deserve that? Just thinking about it gives me bad feels
his sudden turn to the dark side and out of nowhere rise to power really rub me the wrong way in Earthbound which to me was the strangest aspect of the game that I couldn't accept as just a "lol Earthbound" moment. Thankfully Mother 3 made him one of the most interesting characters, still not explaining why he got connected to Giygas and gained power, but still made his story arc really tragic, yeah he caused everything to go wrong and indirectly killed Lucas' mom but trapping him in solitude for eternity was overkill. Put the old kid out of his misery.

He just got what he deserved it.

pokey seemed pretty happy about his situation, and with his infinite immaturity, that might not change
Does anyone else imagine Pokey sounding like Eric Cartman?

>pokey seemed pretty happy about his situation
He probably didn't realize that he was trapped in forever. He just thought "HAHA You can't get me!"kind of thing.

I thought I was alone.
Remember that scene when Cartman becomes police officer, and goes hitting everyone and saying: Don't disrespect my authority. Porky gave me that impression on Mother 3.
He was a fucking douche.
