Exalt Liquidators are tough. Like. They have the same frontal armor as I do when I wear a shield. Only they don't NEED a shield.

I have to deal 41 damage or higher with my weapons to even pierce their frontal armor.

You don't fuck around with chrysalids. Heavy rockets will down them with decent reliability, but generally you want to stay far away with an open space between you, and have massed laser fire available.
Tanks are also decent against them, but they can and will get killed.
Don't kill a zombie if you aren't sure you can kill the chrysallid that will pop out. A zombie is much, much less threatening.

Lasers can work, but they will still take many shots before going down, forget about explosives they are resistant to them

Invest in high explosives. Invest heavily.
They're available from the start, dirt cheap, and will kill almost anything in the game aside from sectopods.
They are your best friend. Don't be afraid to try relay throws if you have to.

We managed to down nine of em, they are rather vulnerable to fire, however you start with nearly no cover and smoke grenades only do so much.

Heavy rockets yes, HE no because there is a decent chance a single HE won't kill the chrysallid and you cant use 2 on a row (unless you have that instant explosion option of openxcom activated but that might aswell be cheating)

and you really want to kill them as soon as you see them since they can move a lot

What's the main issue you've been having on these missions? Enemies not going down when you shoot them? Not enough cover? Too much enemy cover? Too few agents against too many enemies?

Not enough cover and too few agents. Biggest problems. Taking enemies down isn't a problem, nor is enemy cover, if anything I encourage enemy cover, more reaction shots.

Download Open X-Com and just play it on beginner. Rookies are shit so don't be afraid if a lot of them die, smoke grenades are probably your most helpful ally, ayys either can't see you at all in smoke or they will have lowered accuracy when shooting at you in smoke. Explosives are always a good choice. Don't be afraid to lose and fail, the game is all about learning from your mistakes.
