The sticky might die but the discussion will carry on. What did you feel yesterday, closure or an even deeper grief? Do you think Valve will ever respond?

All this means is that one particular idea for HL3 is shelved, or was ignored. You may see a continuation to HL3 one idea with similar ideas, or different ones.

No surprise on the "HL3 isn't being worked on" front - We all but already knew that

I sympathise with Valve. They obviously don't want to release a new Half Life unless it's groundbreaking, and they obviously just couldn't figure out where FPS can really go from here to have incredibly fresh gameplay. 'muh story' fags are cancer.

It's amazing how many people always said 'I don't care about the game, just tell me how the story ends so that I can have closure'. They've gotten exactly what they asked for and now they're all crying

>What did you feel yesterday, closure or an even deeper grief?
Tbh I thought the ending was perfect. The Combine being hilariously Godly overpowered was obvious from the beginning, but now that they're cut off from Earth it's implied that the forces still stranded there will eventually get defeated by the humans anyway, so it's a bittersweet ending that essentially puts an end to the HL2 story arc and let's them do something completely different in the next game if they want to, sort of like how HL2 was completely different from the first in terms of setting. I don't think the last paragraph is part of the story, I think the vorts just save Freeman and that's it.

>how will Valve respond?
They won't say anything. They're probably secretly relieved.
>>
>sticky finally gone

thank God

Also if they ever do make HL3, they can tell the story of ep. 3 through flashbacks or some shit and only include the most important parts.

I'm happy to know how it would end, especially since they would probably never release it anyway, but at the same time I'm sad that I won't experience this in the game. Dyson sphere and Gordon's ultimate despair would have given me such wonderful chills.

Reminder that humanity would not be lost. As much as tremendum et fascinans is cool and ending with a bittersweet lovecraftian ending full of despair would be a great way to end the franchise...

>ā€œYou have friends. Allies. I have heard their chatter. I have heard them spoken of. This should give you hope. Nothing can be without flaw. The superstructure is riddled with cracks. THEY are vulnerable. THEY are compromised. I am ā€œlivingā€ proof.ā€

The Shu'ulathoi (advisors) are a really powerful and intelligent race kept in a larval state somehow, presumably with the same technology as the Supression Field.

>ā€œA desperate few encysted, deeper, thrust themselves into trances that would endure hundreds of thousands of years. They sleep still. And fewer still took flight. By what means I cannot comprehendā€¦I am not that much one of them. Little of this knowledge is shared or shareable. But they flew/fled.ā€

But anyway, if it ends like this I'm quite happy. It reminds me of being obsessed with HL2 beta and all its lore. The art, mods and theories that come from these revelations is way better than if the game ended up being shit.

Exactly, it was a cheap cop-out. The episodes, as I've already said, are expansion pack tier and in no way qualify as a new HL game, and assuming GabeN and the rest of valve did actually claim the episodes were meant to be 3, they're always aware of how bullshit an answer this is. A game that is as much of an improvement over HL2 as HL2 was over HL will count as HL3.

The Gmans true purpose:
Gman is an ultimate time lord, and wants to prevent any other species from reaching his power level.
There are three species that have time/space travel: humans, Vortigaunts, and Combine. Each species have limited powers but if any two were to be combined it would be extremely powerful and disasterous.
The Combines tech is the weakest, they just use existing portals (Xen to Earth, the portal storms on Earth)
Vortigaunts have the most powerful time/portal tech, closest to Gmans powers, and it comes natively to them through telepathic connection in large groups.
The Combine enslaved Vortigaunts, tried to learn their tech or force them to use it, Vortigaunts escaped to Xen, then to Earth.
The humans tech has the most potential for instantaneous time and space travel.

Basically, Gmans plan is to bring all three races together, and have them destroy each others portal tech
Humans destroyed the Combines portal to Earth, they probably will never find Earth again and all the soldiers on Earth will be killed by Resistance
Alyx destroyed humanitys best portal tech, the Borealis
only thing left to do is kill all Vortigaunts
HL3 will be Gman and Alyx vs Gordon and Vortigaunts

>It's amazing how many people always said 'I don't care about the game, just tell me how the story ends so that I can have closure'. They've gotten exactly what they asked for and now they're all crying
Well I was one of those Closurefags, I mean I cared about the games deeply but when asked why I wanted a sequel I would say I want the main plot to be concluded.

With that said while I like knowing how Laidlaw would have finished the game it's still not satisfying because it's not a game, or even a short novella that allows my mind to fully process the story. It's just a summary.

So saying we got the "story" is like saying you can get the story by just reading a film's summary on Wikipedia. And while that can be amusing its obviously not the same thing.

I'm gonna make my own Half-Life 2 Episode 3. With strippers and blackjack, and fully modeled vulvas!

I was working with Valve back in 2008 and as a souvenir I keep the Raising the bar book signed by pretty much whole Orange Box team. Is it worth anything nowadays?

By the way, Half-Life 3 pretty much turned in a sandbox space MMO akin to Eve online and Star Citizen last time I heard any news about it, I'm not even shitting you. Eventually it was redesigned to be a separate game in the same universe (as Portal was), not sure if it's still in the works.

That was an interview, clearly designed to advertise the expansions and get as many people as possible to buy them, so of course he's going to make up stupid shit like 'yeah this is totally Half-life 3 guis xD' if he can get away with it. it was also an almost plausible excuse for why Valve still haven't bothered to make a proper HL3.
>there is no point in further discussion.

How does the Combine's inter-dimensional travel work? If they relied on the resonance cascade's portal storms to discover earth, how do they conquer other planets?

Did they not have the blueprints to local teleportation thanks to the Nova Prospekt teleporter? It's not like the plans would have gotten destroyed with the facility, right?

If Xen acts, as i understand it, a hub that's required to reach different dimensions, how didn't the Combine find the Nihilanth quicker? Doesn't hiding in a place like that seem like a bad idea?

Asssuming Gman's benefactors are in a conflict with the Combine, doesn't their control of Xen basically block the Combine out of using dimensional travel?

If What we've read made it into half life 3.

>>
Valve has been a big proponent of VR. I honestly believe they are waiting for VR to create the first game that was truly a push for VR. Not a port, not a simulation, a game that revolutionized gaming, the way HL, HL2, and the Episodes did in their own way.

The writer is pissy they aren't making Half Life Episode 7 every year, but Gaben wants each entry to be sacred. He realized the episodic content, while a revolutionary way to release games, couldn't keep up with quality or time. Now they're just waiting for someone to kick off this VR thing, but consoles seem to be delaying it.
>>
>>388347240
1.Hardware was a thing even back then, steam controller was a set of rings put on fingers which captured movement
2. A VR project with Dog from half-life but it was mostly just throwing him ball etc, VR was very early
3. A fantasy RTS game said to be similar to Warcraft 3
4. A prototype game similar to Battlefield (with vehicles etc), but sci-fi, used Half-Life 2 assets so possibly it was also set to be in its universe
4. Steam was supposed to have these new tools with which you could build your own games and adventures using Source and share it with other Steam users
5. Big team was working on Source Filmmaker and everyone though it's going to be the shit that's going to change how Hollywood makes movies.
6. There were multiple puzzle games, I specifically remember one which required player to move through a 4 dimensional space by refocusing the camera and it allowed you to look and go through walls
7. There was a LOT of shitposting on official steam forums
8. HL universe was to be expanded to movies, tv series and multiple spin off games developed by different studios

>>388347428
It had a coop mode where you played with Gordon and Alyx and was developed pretty much normally. Oh and characters moved their lips when you used voice chat!

Half life 3 turned into a separate grandiose project and it was blurry what it was supposed to be exactly but it definitely was a massive multiplayer game that took place in space, heard comparisons to EVE online, something happened with EVE back then because everyone was impressed with CCP software

Because the ones that clamor for it now don't realize what they're asking for. Ignorant idiots who are in the dark about what's really going on at Valve.

Surely the minority of intelligent Half Life fans knew the end had come when all but Gabe had resigned from Valve, this only cements the notion that HL is truly over to the other minority of people who kept up false hope regardless of how many staff members they heard had left the studio,

The only people left still asking for HL3 are mindless sheep parroting what the original fans had started to begin with.
>>
>>388339794

Just read it. As bad I feel that wee didn't get a game, my imagination made it feel more legendary than anything modern valve could have made out of it.

I do think the employers bit is made up to make it sound like he has an important mission to Gordon
Even if he is employed by a higher race, its obvious the 'contract' is stop other races from perfecting time/space travel
The Xen and Combine invasion destroyed Black Mesa and set their research back for years, anything Black Mesa East has is nothing in comparison to their heyday.
It also scared Aperture into sending the Borealis into hiding, before it could be fully tested.
He got extremely pissed when the Vortigaunts interrupted his alone time with Gordon
And now we know his business with Gordon ends with destroying the Borealis
All things relating to the study of time travel/interdimensional portals, all stopped by Gman

TF2 and Loot Boxes. After the success of Steam as a platform and F2P moneymakers, Valve literally didn't need to be a video game company anymore. When was the last time they released ANY games?

The excuse they give about the desire to make every game groundbreaking is bullshit. It's just something a company that doesn't need to make games to stay alive would say while they sink into artistic madness. EVERY artist wants to make something perfect and groundbreaking, but most of them actually need to release something just to stay alive. It's the same bullshit with GRRM and his goddamn Song of Ice and Fire.

But it does. Laidlaw quitted a year ago because of age, he wouldn't have any reason to post a summarized version of wannabe plot if he knew before quitting that someone was still working on it. It's his baby, there is no malice in actions, he just knew that nothing is happening inside Valve in terms of Half-Life development. He knew that it's over and it's dead. There were never any plans to do Half-Life 3 and not just and episode 3 either. I wouldn't even be surprised that Artifact announcement moved him to make a summary for the fans.

Yes, it was supposed to be a trilogy, and the elusive third episode is what people were waiting for.

Episodic gaming was a bit of a trend in the heydays of Steam (or digital distribution in general). Telltale's Sam & Max managed to pull it off. My guess is that Valve tried to be an early player in the episodic gaming format like they were in the video game digital distribution. As the trend didn't really catch on (with FPS games at least), they're more inclined to spend their resources elsewhere. I think the only reason EP2 ever came out was because they overhauled the Source engine and wanted to show it off.

One possible future timeline is one where Valve enters the game engine market with Source (competing with UE and Unity), and uses EP3 to market/showcase it. Might be a bit late for that though.
>>
>>388344515
I think it's grimmer than that. He wanted the Combine to have a reason to stomp humanity into paste specifically so they'd be too caught up in bloodlust to find out about the Borealis.

The City 17 fracas was basically an invitation for a real invasion force to wipe the planet from the universe, and he wanted to pull Gordon out before they could have the distress signal broadcast. At that moment, Gordon was still good as a lynchpin. It's why he ditches Gordon for Alyx: she accomplished the goal he intended, which was the destruction or complete erasure of the Borealis from relevant history. Also a spiteful way of saying that Gordon cannot rebel without consequence. I kinda like the idea that at the end of the day, the G-Man is more of an enemy to him than the Combine or similar threats.

At the end of the day, the only goal there is to, indeed, keep the Borealis from falling into the Combine's hands. I think this was all a ploy to keep them from becoming virtually all-powerful to the point where they could potentially start invading other multiverses. I also doubt Humanity's the only one to figure out String-based Teleportation. He's probably had to ensure the destruction of those races as well.

It does lend credence to the idea of him/his employers being something technically above the Combine in terms of technological advancement, but all the more aware of how dangerous they'd be if they were aware of them and could directly compete.

>What did you feel yesterday, closure or an even deeper grief? Do you think Valve will ever respond?

It's closure for me, I entered the seires waching the intial cliffhanger on youtube because my computer was shit and didn't play Half Life very well. Having the game spoiled for me in Text form while anticlimactic is at least something more than I've gotten since building my computer hoping for the game to come out.

My hope is Valve responds but I doubt it, however they were in denial about anything related to Portal 2 until it it started leaking so maybe they will decide to announce something and finally pull their heads out of their ass about this secrecy shit as it's lead to nothing but disaster. But I doubt we will get this story, Laidlaw left over a year ago so if it's in the works the story has probably been altered significantly.

How was the feeling within Valve regarding Episode 3 or HL3? Like, did they really believe it was going to be published anytime? Also, is it true that the backlash of Mass Effect 3 and the ending of Bioshock Infinite made Valve change their mind? Any clue why they were/are so secretive about something people demand for a decade?

Eh, I mostly remember the stuff I actually worked on.

Valve's game maker looked very similar to the level editor included in Portal 2, but it was ran straight from Steam and you had access to all Source (Counter-Strike, Team Fortress, Portal etc) assets.

There was a lot of research on capturing facial expressions with a single webcam because:
1) It could be used in source filmmaker to have people record realistic expressions and lipsync for their movies without any expensive equipment
2) Facial expresions, moving faces and directional sound were speculated to be the next big immersive thing in multiplayer games, so you could see where other players were looking, hear what they were saying as if they were there etc

It was developed normally but the focus was on two player co-op (maybe it was a co-op only even) and how actual players interacted with the environment. Characters moved their lips when you used voice chat and there was directional sound. Also if you used the special controller the characters moved hands and fingers and you could also use hand gestures. That actually was an important mechanic in one of the puzzles i heard about, because you had to sneak past the enemies without making a sound and only communicate using hand gestures.

i was working there in 2008 so I can't really tell anything about what happened after I left. The communication on HL with community was pretty normal I think, Orange Box marketing was still in full swing

g-man isn't in conflict with anyone, he was the one who enslaved the alien race in hl1 so that freeman could free them, thus ensuring that the vortigaunts would see him as a hero

since g-man can time-travel, he can predict the combine invasion of hl2 and onwards

he made sure that the vortigaunts are allied with the humans so that none of the races that are able to time-travel work together, as that could have catastrophic consequences on the entire universe

when the resistance (gordon, alyx), discover the borealis, g-man knew that it would have to be destroyed, or else the vortigaunts and freeman would both be able to time-travel, this is why after alyx shoots mossman dead, g-man takes her into stasis instead of freeman, since freeman now "belongs" to the vortigaunts

Reposting from another thread:

Today, I went from an 88 game wishlist on Steam to an 18 game wishlist. I went through my entire wishlist and found the games that existed on gog, the humble store, and on consoles, and got rid of them one by one. For the 18 remaining, I will probably email the indie developers if I can pay them directly with paypal for a steam cd key, and for the non-indie games I will probably purchase them on g2a. If neither of those options exist, I just won't purchase them.

The release format was what made the Episodes "groundbreaking." This was before rampant DLC or episodic games like Life is Strange. It was supposed to be the way games were done from then on. But they probably realized they wanted more effort in their main series.
>>
>>388351079
what's kind of interesting to me is how few characters show up in the episode 3 plot. Just Alyx, Mossman, Breen (briefly and pointlessly), and G-Man. far fewer than episode 1 and 2, and also the only one so far to not introduce any new characters. Doesn't that seem kind of strange? laidlaw even wrote in a part about how the rebels sent a ton of people in to support gordon/alyx, but makes no mentions of any of them as individuals (Barney and Dog would be the most obvious), or even having the player interact with them in any way.
Back in 09, there was some discussion over how Valve were developing tech to have characters use sign language, probably for use in Episode 3. I wonder what became of that deaf character.

>The only people left still asking for HL3 are mindless sheep parroting what the original fans had started to begin with.

I agree with this but it has nothing to do with the fucking writers which is why this shit is being blown out of proportion. It has to do with the way valve operates. Half Life 1 and Half Life 2 had a different writing team and all Laidlaw's responsibility was was to organize the ideas. His job is even further trivialized by the fact that he was at the whim of logistical problems regarding scripting/coding. Everyone acting like the lead writer matters is fucking delusional. A lot of the best episodes of TV or the best movies in series are not written by the lead writer. Also lets be real, anyone who doesn't know the difference between the HL2 Episodes and HL3 is not a real Half-Life fan. This whole situation is fraudulent from Valve to the "fans."

Interesting. If you aren't RPing then that matches up surprisingly well with the assets found in Portal 2 leftover from the elusive F-Stop, and also works with the mods for the non-euclidean geometry that popped up at the time.

If you can stay away from it that's great. But you are right. It's just a small fit. Steam is like a wave in the ocean. You can try to ride it or you can just stop surfing. In 3 years when you are no longer mad someone is going to ask why you refuse to use steam. What are you going to tell them? Because Valve once had good IPs? As opposed to what, GoG which never had any? Then you are going to think about it and be like gee this is retarded. I know because I've been there. Grab a CD from the Humble Store. If they're indie, ask them to email the developers and see if they'll let them purchase straight from them using paypal. If they own a console, ask them to purchase it on the console. We can get our games without Steam, guys.

actually they should have just released a blanket disclosure that laidlaw is not an employee anymore and that they will not disclose any info about HL3.
staying silent really isn't a good for a number of reasons.

God, those look terribly cartoon-ish. Hopefully it was just a test model for SteamVR, I don't want my gritty Half Life / Portal universe games looking like TF2.

>If they own a console, ask them to purchase it on the console.

See. This is antithetical to someone who actually enjoys games. You wouldn't buy a fucking gaming PC to play the console version of a multiplat. That's my point.

>Grab a CD from the Humble Store
Why the fuck would I get anything from the humble store when I don't want it?

>>388358184
Are you implying it isn't? I mean they have some great abandonware but when it comes to recent games it's terrible.

>This is antithetical to someone who actually enjoys games
Someone who enjoys games wouldn't care what platform they play it on. And if you can at least share your point that Valve and Steam are shit and will continue to be shit, they might be willing.

>Why the fuck would I get anything from the humble store
Because it cuts off Valve from sales, and they usually haves sales that are at least similar to Steam sales.

Yikes. L4D2 was already pushing it for me with the meme characters

That's entirely untrue. The most dedicated gamers maximize their experience.

>and they usually haves sales that are at least similar to Steam sales.

It's not the price. It's the games. The humble store generally sells absolute shit taste coffee table moble tier games. Do you seriously even like video games?

Me because HL it's my favorite series above all. Fucking love the story, characters and all the mistery around.

The original plan for HL2 was so much cooler.

Coming into City 17 at the dead of night when it's raining, seeing the ruins of earth's armies on the plains before you reach the city (while in transit on the train).

They removed a buttload of plot exposition too to please the autists who whine about muh environmental storytelling.
