Started Xenoblade the other day, about five hours in. When does it pick up? I'm feeling like I don't really understand a lot of the mechanics (arts, leveling up arts, and switching characters are some of them). Should I just look up a guide on what to level up and which arts to use?

In the beggining it's okay to play as shulk since he's the main damage dealer and he's a ton of fun to play.
This game is pretty long so take your time and play the way you want to, don't sweat it.

The game really picks up once you reach the bionis leg, you don't like it then then you might not like the rest of the game. As for arts it's not very complicated, Shulk's artes are about positioning to increase their effectiveness, and as long you make sure to level up his basic ones you should be fine. As for other party members you want to max the useful stuff, like ones that inflict break or topple or straight up do most damage. You really don't have to learn their artes though other than for chain attacks since you could pretty much go through the whole game only playing as Shulk, though it's also less fun that way.

I'm finally sold on this game. The environments are looking pretty good and the fact you can now interact with it to create new paths is already an a step in the right direction, combat systems seems overall faster than the e3 stream and seems to have more depth than XC and XCX mainly because the AI doesn't look retarded and the ability to make your party members any kind of class while retaining their unique qualities is there too. Lastly the OST is sounding amazing
