He literally founded Valve Software or Valve because he was tired of Microsoft's bullshit and their "System".

He revitalized PC gaming, made modders life a lot easier with tools like Workshop etc. He gave tools to Japan devs and Indies to release that would never release to PC before like Metal Gear,Tekken etc.

He made amazing games even with their flaws all were solid until Portal 2.(2011).Valve was making PC gaming amazing with amazing sales, making distribution to amazing long forgotten ports and support.

Then what happened?
Don't tell me money. He had fucktons of money before all this shit started. All of his game made money,Store was making tons of money. You cant just ignore the all principles, foundation you built for more money. It would haunt you every day going work and doing fuck ton of nothing.

I simply dont get it. Parade of bullshits
Steam Machines,Steam OS,Steam Controller,Steam link,paid mods,microtransactions,pay to win bullshit,gambling shit.

They never even made good VR content which they basically shouting over since last 3-4 years.

i dont know

Basically attempting to defeat system by creating another system.

>>Steam Machines,Steam OS,Steam Controller,Steam link

All these are designed to save PC gaming you idiot

>steam machine
a consolized version of PC for people that dont like building their own rigs. It is designed to get normies/casuals into pc gaming

>steamOS
To promote linux as an OS. If you still dont get why we need linux you are a retard. It gives you freedom to use PCs anyway we want, instead of how microsoft or apple wants us to use them

>steam controller
Designed to make FPS faster and more precise to play on controller, so consoles FPS stop shitting the market with slow gameplay

>paid mods
that was awful, terrible implementation of what should have been a donation idea
>>
>>388322639
>steam link

So instead of buying the next XBOX1X1obox U or psshit you just stream stuff from your PC room to the living room
>>
>>388322117
I still don't understand why people are so fucking angry. It's not like you're shareholders at Valve or some shit. If Gaben wants to run his company to the ground it's his fucking problem, it's not your money that's on the line.
>>
>>388322327
They are good though, they work well and make it easy to use games anywhere around the house. Not everyone likes exclusively playing games on their desktop.

>>388322383

You either die a hero, or live long enough to see yourself become a villain.

I bet if most of you met up with your younger counterpart he'd probably hate your guts too.

But the tragedy is, we all eventually become assholes no matter what we do to try to avoid it. Its like its hardcoded into human nature.
>>
>>388322117
I don't really follow what everyone is complaining about?

What did Gabe do?
Is it as simple as not releasing a game we want?
>>
>>388323405
>muh hardcoded

nah, if you were a villain at beginning but hide yourself all time , there would be time when your hide skin would pulled off.

Same shit happened.
>>
>steam machine
to attract casuals
>steamOS
attracts people to use and get to know Linux more. Amazing, what's wrong with it?
>steam link
people who bought it were happy with the product. It removes the hassle of using laptop and shit and instead just gives you one small nice looking compact product that does everything for you.
>steam controller
so that people can play games they couldn't/play worse with the other controllers.
All of the above is pretty much towards saving pc gaming or enchancing it. Valve has done a lot for the pc community, maybe even saved it.

>microtransaction/hats ruined tf2, skins ruined csgo, cosmetics ruined dota
Nope. They only made those games more popular without actually effecting the game in ANY way.
>pay to win
?

Some other points I thought you'd add.
>inb4 you don't own your games on steam
You don't really own your OS either, you dont own your physical copy these days either.
>whaa they're not making games anymore

Yea, I won't support them on this one and I think a donation button would be better. BUT bethesda is doing paid mods now too, and I've yet to see a backlash about it, what's up with that? It was wrong back then but we accept it now?

>>
>>388322117
>Why did he turn to something he swore to defeat it?

Think you're making some assumptions about what things are like at Valve now. Gaben has always been one to allow people to manage themselves. Valve isn't the 30 people it used to be, now it's more than 300.

I think he has very little to no grip on the company anymore. Worse yet due to their flat level management methods I think people just come in and fuck off all day. Gaben is old and tired and Valve is massive and stagnant now.

It's a shame.
>>
>>388323123
A lot of games don't work properly or at all with SteamOS. Sprites flicker, random freeze-crashes, and plain error-messages at startup.
SteamOS is a failure so far. I've had it for a long time, but I've changed back to Windows because I can start big picture mode by pressing the xbox-button anyway, and it runs all of my games.

In Valve's introduction-manual for new employees it says someting along the lines of "noone is your boss, especially not Gabe Newell", so I guess he doesn't really have any ruling over what the company does with itself, so his opinions/visions might just be completely unconsidered at this point.

People can't continue doing everything all the time. You will run out of gas some day. But stopping the money making machine is pure cretinism, so it's handed to other people to run, for whom it's just ordinary work for money.

The industry is in a terrible position where the old guard are tired, out of touch family men who just want to retire. Their middle aged fans are sick of how corrupt it became and want nothing to do with it. And the youngsters never experienced the gaming scene of the past, and the current corporate bullshit is all they know. They are the ones who run things these days, genuinely believing that the conveyor belt milking franchises is an art machine which they dreamed to work on in their childhood.

It's exactly what happens with governments. Either they remain in power long enough to turn everything into an old fart conservative dystopia , or we get the influx of brainwashed young brats, with their "progressive thinking" and shitting on traditions non stop.

Valve wanted to break into the console market without realizing that consoles need to follow a rigid system for their skus instead of having every hardware company shit out their own version of the damn thing. Also, they need an anchor of exclusive first party games to get a foothold in the first place.
>Steam OS
Majority of their customers use windows, at any time Microsoft could launch their own competitive service(they failed, twice) or just outright make steam break on windows (highly unlikely) but the threat is always there no matter how small. And they didn't want to be tied to that fact.
>Steam Controller
Focused too much on trying to replicate mouse precision aiming that they skimped on every other part of what makes a controller good.
>Steam link
Probably their only success as it did what it set out to do fairly well.

Valve cannot into anything hardware related or software outside of their own store and games as a service so they doubled down on it.

Expansions and new maps require money for all the dev and design work. And you would still need the money to keep the servers afloat.
Look at dota, there is still a lot of gameplay content coming out. Just because TF2 wasn't as big as CSGO and dota, to keep some devs on it doesn't mean they are suddendly bad guys.

You know that servers are a continuous thing, not a pay once thing. That's why so many old games have their official server shutting down even with an active community.
And most of old games net code was not as server sided like now. Players hosted the game on their machines and the servers were just trackers of what game to join.
Now games run server side, and you computer only receives the needed information for you to play. This reduced latency cheating and strain on the host hardware.

Are you stupid or something? They released all of those, barely supported them, and now all of those are on life support and barely acknowledged except maybe the steam link. Their flat management policy is the ruin of the company. They cant focus on anything except adding microtransactions and gambling mechanics to all their new crap.

My younger self was a racist hyper-sensitive christian fundamentalist. I'd hate him.

Probably, my younger self was a pussy who was too afraid to even grab a tit. I'm sure he rationalized it to himself by imagining he is some sort of 'nice guy' who respects women, god I hate that asshole.

Nah friendo, he was always cancer. You're just too young to remember a world with only cd/dvd DRM.

Valve just released new updates for SteamOS and has a fairly large team working on it.
Specifically the work they've done on open source graphics drivers for it is really impressive.

Whats your source for that image because all I found from reverse image search was another /v/ thread.

That said, my games still run like total ass on Linux anything. Doesn't matter the distro. Windows 10 might be shit but I have extreme doubts that any game will run better on Linux than Windows.

Valve has never done anything good for the industry you fucktard. All they've done is harm the industry, provide anti-consumer policies, and kill video games. Fuck off.
>>
So is it time for /v/ to FINALLY accept that Valve is objectively worse and more evil than Activision, EA, Sony and Microsoft?

My pc can barely run min gfx rocket league, but in linux I did get some more fps out of it.

>add gambling to every single thing they release now (crates & keys, steam trading cards)
>paid mods
>ignored fans for years regarding info for Half Life
>cram their own DRM into video games on top of whatever the developer wants crammed into the game as well after talking about how DRM doesn't work and is bad for the industry

One could argue that's a bad thing for PC gaming.

Literally says Phoronix on the image. They're one of the only sites around that regularly does Linux game benchmarks.
The Mesa driver for AMD hardware is a lot faster than AMD's own driver. The tests for new hardware that AMD hasn't had time to fix yet is especially eye opening.

>I have extreme doubts that any game will run better on Linux than Windows.
Games built from the start with cross-platform APIs can be faster, sometimes much faster on Linux.
D3D->OpenGL ports suffer about 20% performance degradation, but that's down to how the non-standard D3D workflow doesn't map well to the high level standard.
D3D->Vulkan on the other hand can be just about as fast as Windows

>He literally founded Valve Software or Valve because he was tired of Microsoft's bullshit and their "System".
He did not. He founded Valve because he learned a lot and made dozens of Millions as an executive at Microsoft. He also met John Carmack while working for Microsoft (he had Doom as a feature game which made him a lot of money, and he stole UI elements to improve Windows 95/3.x). He also had Carmack's stolen engine code and figured why not open a game studio and turn it into a service/marketplace.

He's king hooknose and nothing else.

After Half-Life 1 every single title was effectively purchased. He saw small studios working on mods or titles, purchased them and hired the moders, rebadged it and said he helped make it. Then tied it to his store exclusively.
