Their final segment of the Switch reveal was a simulated Splatoon eSports event.

They made a deal with Disney and ESPN to broadcast the finals of Smash 4 EVO.

They're hosting many offline and online tournaments for ARMS and Splatoon 2 and likely Pokken as well.

They also made a deal with Disney to rehost their previous tournaments and NWC on their Disney XD's Summer gaming block.

This is likely to happen again with NWC 2017 in October.

They even have a dedicated NintendoVersus twitter that they created this year solely for their competitive games.

They do care about building up an image of wanting to create a competitive community.

Smash Bros. is a party game to Nintendo. All companies now wish that their games could be competitive as a way to market them and ensure they have a long life. Hardly any companies really care enough to organize their own events and offer up their own money as cash prizes too. The fact that Nintendo is actually doing things themselves shows that they're more serious about making their games be taken more seriously as competitive games.

I would think that the next Smash Bros. would probably take on a way more competitive edge too. Sakurai said he doesn't want to work on the series anymore and you can bet that's the direction Nintendo would take it with him gone.

To be fair. Nintendo's treatment of Melee mainly stems from how it's a 15 year old game that Nintendo aren't making active money from anymore. It's completely contrary to their interests to have people play Melee over their newer games.

Roasters are pretty great, my man. A Roaster+ charged punch is 150 damage, it travels quickly, it's a medium weight weapon so it will beat light weapons and be beated outright only by the heavy ARMS, and you have a lot of control over it. It's a great glove overall.
