Is it really fair to call Yoshi's Island a sequel? Like I get it straight up says SMW2 in the title but that the "World 2" part of the title isn't even there in the Japanese release and was probably just added to help sales.

I'd say so, since Mario is definitely there and it was the next big Mario platforming console release after World.

Do you consider World to be a sequel to 3? The 4 is there in the Japanese version. Do we call Wario Land 2 Super Mario Land 4?

I think it's fair to say Yoshi's island is the start of a new franchise, but at the same time, Yoshi originated in SMW. So it's a spinoff sequel. Like Persona to SMT.

I was actually thinking of that series when I was making that original post. I haven't played WL much admittedly but I'm a bit torn on what to think about that since from a gameplay perspective I would drop the SML name altogether but from a story one (not that Mario has much of a story) it'd make sense since Wario was the antagonist in SML2. I guess it's whatever though, I'm overthinking all of this.

Nintendo probably dominates this. Outside of that, I can't really think of anything. Kotor 2? That doesn't really count. Maybe reboots are the answer? Fallout 3 did pretty well.

Super Mario World was called Super Mario World: Super Mario Bros. 4 in Japan
Not to mention it was similar in playstyle to 1, LL/2 Jap and 3

Yoshi's Island was called World 2 only in America/Europe and it was wildly different.

It is actually technically a prequel to the original Super Mario Bros. and the game is called "Super Mario: Yoshi's Island" in Japan

It was rough around the edges and could have been executed quite a bit better(not having Naka and Yasuhara and a lot of the first-tier Sonic Team members working on it didn't help_ but it had a lot of balls

Do you consider Donkey Kong Country to be a sequel to Donkey Kong? They have different protagonists.
