Because the lead writer for HL2 basically just dumped what the entire story of HL2 Episode 3 was going to be, people are assuming this is confirmation that Valve has essentially given up on all ambitions of actually making it or an HL3.

My least favorite half-life game was Episode 1, any of the others I could play alone but I would only bother with Episode 1 if I was doing the whole series, if they made a game as good as that I would be perfectly satisfied. Lootboxes and whatnot is a symptom of videogame companies hiring experts in addiction to make their games more "appealing" to customers.
Dopamine is a chemical in the brain that gives us pleasure, but most of it actually comes when we anticipate things. That is why you can hype yourself up for a game, and then when you buy it you feel buyer's remorse. Or why you want to eat fastfood, and then regret it after.

Lootboxes is making kids into addicts, people are reliant on quick things happening so they anticipate what happens next.
This means that the game doesn't even have to be GOOD to be addictive. This also plays into "sunk cost fallacy", which means that means that once you have invested more effort into something, be it time or money, it is harder to let go of it.

In the Stanford Marshmallow Experiment we saw children given marshmallows, but told that if they did not eat it for a time they would be given another one. The kids were agonized by the test, many ate it, some took bites of it, others looked away.
But the interesting part about this experiment is that it was followed for 12 years, and they found the kids who could resist the marshmallow had done much better in life. Better careers, better income, more happy.
The people who play this game are the same kids who could not stop themselves from eating the marshmallow.
It is a lot of short-term gratification, and the game actively teaches you to enjoy these short-term rewards for the sake of interest in the game. It will deplete you from being able to have long term goals, and other videogames that are too slow will become boring to you.

This game is a money-making machine that plays on a lot of the psychological weaknesses of children and teenagers. It's one hell of an experiment.
