Why do people feel that Kid Gohan and Ultimate Gohan would play the same? There's already one key difference in play between them, and that's reach. Speed is also undoubtedly going to be a difference maker. Little Gohan does a lot of damage, he's fast and in your face because he has no choice but to be due to his reach. Given the level of care ArcSys puts into crafting characters (see: >>388283914) Ultimate Gohan is definitely going to be slower in comparison, but he'll be more punish game orientated and/or Rekka. His moves have to hit HARD to translate just how powerful he is. It seems like they're unlockable but I wouldn't count on it being as simple as just having to beat the story to get them. For GGXrd to get unlockables you had to use the game's money system which is not particularly generous if you want to get Raven, the one alt costume or a bunch of the alt colors or you can use real money. Though on the other hand they did put out some of the DLC characters for free for the first week of their release so that's nice.

It's the playstyle. In older installments of Guilty Gear for example you have 2 versions of Sol Badguy; regular and Holy Order. Regular is a fairly standard rushdown character with good tools for most situations. That's not an excuse when there is a long laundry list of unique characters to choose from that they refuse to do ever instead of cloning existing ones into different forms. While I do agree that we need more variety I don't think the SSBs really affect anything. They clearly made them because it was an easy boost to the roster count. It's not like we would have gotten somebody cool and interesting instead had they not added the blues, rather we'd have probably just gotten two less characters because the two of them combined probably took significantly less work than even one more completely new character. That's the point of clones, to add a little more variety for significantly less work, and it's really only a problem when there starts to be more clones than unique fighters like in your usual Dragon Ball game.
