>he gets transported into the distant future where nobody knows who he was or what happened.
That's not really part of the story, it's obviously Marc talking directly about Valve, the wording is very weird compared to the rest of the plot (how could there be new members of HIS research team from black mesa?)
>>
I wonder how portal works in on all of this since that lemons guy used to harbor the borealis
>>
>>388280625
>No they won't, the Combine on Earth are stranded without the Borealis and portals, and the humans will slowly outnumber them now that they can fuck and have babies again.
The thing is it doesn't matter. Humans can't stop the Combine, at the most they just caused them a mild inconvenience for all their efforts. Even if they drive them away, who's to say they won't just come back?

>>
>>388280731
>Even if they drive them away, who's to say they won't just come back?
They won't? Combine have shit portal technology, that was the whole point of the episodes. The combine only got to Earth during the portal storms originating from Black Mesa, then they quickly transported the citadel to get a solid portal directly back to their staging area. The combine were trying to get to the Borealis to reestablish that connection, but without any portals, the empire can't do anything.
>>
>>388280729
What SHOULD have happened:

>Black Mesa caused the apocalypse etc etc
>Gordon can't defeat them alone
>modest shower curtain salesman and wide eyed optimist Cave Johnson somehow holds the secret technology he accidentally discovered that is the key to defeating the combine
>Gordon finds it and wins
>lifelong adversaries Aperture and Black Mesa symbolically coming together for the first time to save the universe

Instead we got some bullshit how he had this great time machine and it did jack fuck and shit. Way to go. The whole series was pointless and everyone dies. Woooo.

Why would GMan leave one of his most valuable assets to die and instead take the girl he had to babysit across the country instead?

I know he has some sort of plan for Alyx too but why would he LEAVE Gordon instead of just taking him along too

He's been grooming her to become her perfect 'asset' since he rescued her in Black Mesa.
Also the vortessence shit in ep2 could've added some kickass gameplay gimmicks in her own game.
>>
>>388279834
At the pace Valve releases games, why do they feel the need to have these dramatic opened ended cliffhanger endings for all of the Half Life entries? I mean imagine if Episode 3/Half Life 3 actually came out with the same plot as that synopsis after 10 whole years, people would flip the fuck out.

so what i think the symbolism is as follows:
>HL1
GMan gives scientists the crystals needed to start the resonance cascade and, ultimately, the Combine invasion (US discreetly incites a civil war/revolution in a middle-east country, prompting for Russia to invade)
>HL2
GMan brings the most able operative, Freeman, forward in time to now cripple the Combine's presence on Earth, as well as get rid of the Combine's puppet, Breen (US uses a popular, exiled leader from the country to lead ANOTHER revolution, this time to topple soviet authority in the region, as well as end the puppet communist government)
>HL3 possibly
GMan destroys the Borealis, accomplishing his objective while leaving Freeman to die, instead taking Alyx, who is far more easily manipulated (US comes in after the region is destabilized, securing the resource (oil, WMDs, etc) needed to cripple Russia. They either exile or assassinate the previous leader, installing another puppet dictator under the guise of democracy)
y/n? credits to another anon for the basis of the theory

You didn't read it, the Vortigants pull him out before he dies. Which is how he can write the letter in the first place (and be saved for HL3 itself) .But we won't ever get that.

Sad endings mean sad customers who don't buy the next installments of games that are released. Disney himself knew this which is why he modified the fairy tales he animated so much. The ONLY reason Valve would do a tragic ending is if they were killing Half Life off forever. But they couldn't even do that.

On that note, ep3's ending isn't so much tragic as it is another cliffhanger to get people buying HL3 which would have contained the "real" ending which probably would have been some time travel bullshit to stop the Resonance Cascade entirely, since the Borealis has teleporting time machine inside itself.
>>
I don't know, doesn't seem that tragic to me. I mean, sure it isn't 100% happy, but Freeman did survive and there's a big chance that the resistance managed to eliminate the combine on earth, so not everything is bad.

The bigger issue looming beyond the Combine was that the Earth was irreversibly fucked on multiple levels. Even if the Resistance won, the planet was still being overrun by Xen life and was barely habitable for the native species. One implication of Gordon waking up on an Alien looking beach who knows how many years into the future could mean that Earth kept changing and humanity is extinct now.

>>
>>388285085

>was that the Earth was irreversibly fucked on multiple levels

Not really, the ocean is only a few meters shallower (not much considering the ice age brought it down a few hundred feet) and there's still plenty of nature outside the cities (see ep2). Nature reclaims everything and people move on, much like what happened after the fall of Communism (which the Combine is based upon).

Between the Citadel being destroyed in ep1, the Combine portals in ep2, then the Combine homeworld's power source in ep3, they don't have much influence anymore beyond their fauna. The advisers left on earth get to await their inevitable deaths as they are isolated, surrounded and exterminated.

The whole point was that they didn't destroy the Dyson sphere because it's so unfathomably big that even the Borealis couldn't even put a dent in it. The next move for the Resistance relies on whether or not the Combine decides Earth is too costly an operation for them to keep trying to send occupation forces to keep them down. At this point the Resistance has probably repurposed some captured Combine tech so there's a possibility for them to stand a bit more of a chance, as in last seven days rather than seven hours.

You are glossing right over a lot of things. The sea level didn't drop a few meters, it plummeted. The combine are also strip mining the planet of everything useful to them, and their industry is turning the atmosphere toxic along with them dumping hazardous waste everywhere. Wildlife from Xen deposited by the portal storms is overrunning and replacing native life, the Antlions are only barely kept in check by those sonic jammer things.

There would have been another one. One without Freeman in the future. The combine already existed then. Theyre better off fighting that enemy later than simply making them appear later.

Never said they were, but "in a world where these things exist and thus counteract any kind of logic you're trying to apply". This is a world where our logic does not apply. There's headcrabs. There's giant sentient robot-apes named Dog that understand English but don't speak it. There's a man who turned moon dust into portal wall-goop and ranted about explosive lemons, whose company DID play a part with the Borealis at some point. So a cargo ship being forcibly-pulled out of time & space-flux to crash into a dyson sphere isn't that huge a jump in "that world's logic or lack thereof"

The g man wanted the cascade to happen. He would have made it happen. With or without freeman.

I actually think the gman is simply a pressure relief valve for the combine. He lets the militants and martyrs die off by leading them into a brick wall. Much like he just left freeman in laidlaw's writing.
It takes the vortigaunts to stop gman from getting freeman killed. I dont know why they do it. Maybe theyre simply endebted to him. Either way. Gman is a symbol of the combine and tricks civilizations into obedience.

Our current, best design for that reactor involves laser induced micro-black holes, right? The easiest way we could do this is with antimatter, but the production of antimatter is cost and energy prohibitive.
The energy output of a Dyson swarm could serve to mitigate that energy deficit.
The mass necessary to create an entire Dyson sphere, not a swarm, is magnitude borderline unimaginable. I don't believe we'd even have enough in our entire galaxy system.

It's a linear fps with amazing level design and the game never takes control away from you. Stuff is scripted and happening all around you, but the whole game is continuous from beginning to end. The OST ranges from moody and subdued to adrenaline-pumping and scene-stealing depending on the situation, but most of the time its moody. All in all, it's a wild ride and the gameplay completely holds up.

heres my theory
>G-man is part of an alien race that has perfected instant time and space travel
>the G-race does not want any other race to have this
>they see that humans eventually invent time travel/portals and that the Combine will try to steal it
>G-race comes to the conclusion that the best possible way to get time/space travel out of both hands is to send Borealis into space to crash into Dyson Sphere
>from there, they plot backwards
>millions of small changes over 30 years, that starts with delivering the Xen crystal to Black Mesa to start the Resonance Cascade
>Xen creatures spill into Earth, shutting down Black Mesa
>Combine discovers Earth through Xen, taking the world as prisoner
>Combine invasion causes Aperture scientists to send the Borealis to the Arctic early, keeping it unstable
>Eli's death causes Alyx to stick to his plan of destroying Borealis, which makes her shoot Mossman, who wanted to study the time/portal technology

>>388297938
I did think about that, as Kleiner knew what happened to the Borealis, so it must have happened before the events of Half Life, and made public in the scientific community.
But in the episode 3 summary it says
>Unfortunately, the device had never been tested. As the Combine pushed Earth into the Seven Hour War, the aliens seized control of our most important research facilities. The staff of the Borealis , with no other wish than to keep the ship out of Combine hands, acted in desperation. They switched on the field and flung the Borealis toward the most distant destination they could target: Arctica.
Of course these are two conflicting stories, im just going to go with this new canon. The theory still works either way.

This, it's like one of those films where every scene features the protagonist. Actually reminds me a bit of Children of Men right now, with the whole oppressive sci-fi atmosphere.
The game never tries to shove the whole picture down your throat, and you remain sympathetic to Gordon's struggle and confusion as he gets spat out of stasis to a world completely alien to him.

It's what the Portal Gun is a prototype of. The Bootstrap doesn't need portals to teleport to places, plus it can move through time as well as space.
>>
>>388296496
If that's true why didn't G-Man kill Dr. Kleiner? Kleiner managed to build a portal device that is superior to that of the Combine with scraps in his basement.

Also why didn't he eradicate the Vorts who can proved to be able jump around time and space without problem when they saved Gordon from the ship and transported them into the future

There's like the 0.99% chance that DOTA flops like LoL is currently. MOBA's are dying. And I really don't think anybody's going to buy Artifact when Heartstone and Magic the Gathering already exist. So maybe there's a chance that Valve will actually have to start making good games again

You should. It's just like one of the fews game series/games that every /v/irgin should play like Chrono Trigger.
>>
>>388289348
Well at least Episode 3 should only be around 5 to 7 hours of gameplay, so it won't turn into another Black Mesa mess.

Although a lot of the stuff and concepts in episode 3 seems way more ambitious than episode 1 and 2 so who knows. Modders are really bad at planning too, so I'm sure they are eventually getting stuck once they have to make time-altering effects and giant dyson spheres.

This is a very interesting point. If we assume HL takes place in the same year it was released (1998) the seven hours war probably takes place in like 1999, so that's actually a very plausible explanation.

They're right though, the paragraph makes no sense in relation to the rest of the story. What fucking research team? Where was Gordon teleported to? What happened to the Combine forces on Earth?

It makes no fucking sense. The game was clearly intended to end after the vorts save Freeman from dying on the Borealis, and that's exactly the way it SHOULD have ended, and the setting of HL3 (if it's ever made) will only be tangentially related to the setting of the previous game, as was the case with HL2.

Pure kino ending.

I've always wondered,
What is the story of Half-Life?
And I don't mean the plot
I mean whats really the story?

Literally everyone Gordon interacts with outside of the main cast dies in HL2.
The dude who helps you against the manhacks in the sewers dies to a manhack. The girl who gives you the airboat dies to a poison headcrab and it carries on like this.

But the thing is, you wouldn't know any of these people had died unless you went back to check. The poison headcrab only spawns if you drive the airboat back though the loading screen. The dude only dies to the manhack if you go back though the sewers.

Gordon leaves a massive trail of destruction and death behind him and you could never even know.

People shouldn't be happy to see Gordon Freeman, they should be afraid because interacting with Gordon Freeman means death.

It got left on the backburner in 2008 because the scope was very ambitious and people wanted to work on other stuff like TF2 updates, some sort of Portal game, Left 4 Dead, etc. instead.
