What's with all the Nier Automatas in the lists? It's definitely not a bad game but its world is empty, it's easy on even the harder difficulties, extremely repetitive, no cool bosses, all the enemies are just cute robots with little variety, combat is satisfying but shallow, and you have to play the game 3 times. Playthrough 1 and 2 are barely different, now you just have incredibly over-powered hackerman kill everything by beating easy shmup levels. A2 turns out to be identical to 2B except she has a beserk mode. JRPG characters and dialogue everywhere. The game has some neat existential and fourth-wall breaking themes but it doesn't make up for the game being such a drag IMO. The original Nier was a lot more worthwhile, the gameplay wasn't great either but the soundtrack was top tier and its plot/themes were amazing.

Debug mode almost saved Automata for me but again, not enough enemy variety to keep it interesting. We almost had a really good action hacknslash sandbox kind of game. Imagine being able to completely customize enemy encounters in DMC, Bayonetta, Vanquish, etc.

Last year I played and platinumed Muramasa Rebirth, and man that was excellent too. Great characters, story and gameplay. And the DLC campaigns, fucking excellent. And arguably their best animation yet, and that's saying something. And obviously Dragon's Crown, lacking story but the gameplay and RPG character-building. I still wish this had a PC version so I could just pop it in and grind a few levels whenever or start a new character.

Vanillaware is one of those devs that really does it all. Gameplay, story, writing and hoo fuckin boy those gorgeous 2D graphics. In a generation where almost every 2D game is some indie stuff, it's so nice seeing someone do high-budget HD hand-drawn animation. Playing OS @ 1080 60FPS was a dream. I think it having a PS4 and it also being my first VW is what makes it my favorite overall. If it weren't for those tie-breakers, it'd be a hard pick.

Halo 2 cliffhanger ending pissed me off, and while the campaign was weaker in 3, the custom games, forge and Bungie support for community sealed the deal.

As much as I would love to have it on PC, I would definitely settle for a PS4 port. I still pick up the Vita version for a few rounds here and there.

OS plat was almost too easy. I wanna try the Hell mode difficulty out sometime, but I think the 200 health thing would annoy me. I wish hard mode had its more aggressive AI, the game really needed it.

Muramasa plat isn't that hard when you figure out that the hardest difficulty is actually just Easy Mode except you get 1-hit-killed. In some ways the difficulty before it actually harder, the enemies are more aggressive. Also after I was most of the way done I figured out and started abusing a glitch that makes you auto-revive when you die for some reason, just assign your dodge/block to something and hold it down.

Thanks for the glitch tip. Once I resub to PS+ I'll be able to redownload my file from when it first released. Finally got a new Vita, missed all the DLC sales, and missed DC being free on PS+, worst fucking timing for me. DC was great and I put tons of hours into it too but none of my friends had it so I kind of grew tired of playing it alone. Agreed on the OS plat, I think I got it within a week? I still had a ton of fun and hope DC gets the same treatment. Also thirsting for more 13 Sentinels: Aegis Rim info.

You're in for a treat. A lot of fans argue that the DLC of Muramasa is better than the base game, and I really find it hard to disagree. It's hard to pick a favorite between the 4.

At least you could tell they're further polishing the animation. Vanillaware is a really small slow-working team for big-budget gaming. So I don't expect it for a while. Kamitani accidentally confirmed online co-op in an interview a while ago.

Not sure how co-op will work, I mean we haven't been shown much but still. I'm hoping they continue doing special editions, love my Muramasa and OD:L special editions and I imagine we'd get a nice one for 13S. I'm also fine with them taking their time on 13S, I'm always willing to replay any of their titles in the mean time.

And from the short trailer we've seen it looks like we're getting an OD like story with multiple characters running into one another. I'm hoping they do another set of bad ending/prophecy following, I'm a sucker for characters fates being intertwined.

I'm kind of skeptical of how much the game looks like Persona (mostly because of the modern Japanese HS setting). But goddamnit, Kamitani has done nothing but hits and I trust him.

I love the cool little scrolling psuedo-3D effect they're doing for the game. It makes the sprites look like they pan around in 3D. They've experimented with it in the backgrounds of Muramasa and OS: Leith, but now it seems to be a focal point of the game. IDK how they do it, maybe some kind of elaborate tweening, but it's gorgeous.

Don't forget they did the same with DC when you're riding the flying carpet up the warlocks tower. The 3D approach is looking good, I'm just so confused as to what the game play will be like and how co-op will play out.

I'm getting a feeling it'll be pseudo co-op game, heck maybe it'll play more tactical like and nothing like Muramasa, DC, or OS. Again, whatever it is I'm fine with Kamitani and his team taking as long as they want because in the end it'll be amazing. I just hope it sells well so we can continue getting such beautiful works of art. Vanillaware leaving the game industry would be a disaster and I'm not full yet on playing everything they dish out.

Also we need to continue getting high rez food.

Yea it might not even be an action-type game. Remember, GrimGrimoire was like half yuri visual novel, half side-scrolling RTS. Hard to know what to expect.


Man I'm having flashback to how much I loved the Fighter in DC. Great english dub, manly-ass tanking also with good DPS. Having a Sorcoress with Shield on your team + Cast Sacrifice basically made your party invincible. People loved it when I would get eaten on purpose by bosses just to take basically no damage and leave it wide open for the whole party to DPS it down.

I've actually never played GrimGrimoire, Muramasa (Wii) was my first Vanillaware title. Would you recommend it? I mean I'm gonna buy it anyway since I already own 5 Vanillaware games but I'd like to know if it aged well and is actually playable unlike original OS. yea it's pretty worth. Plot is good and has a lot of cute moments, character artwork is gorgeous. Gameplay is a bizarre side-scrolling RTS game, and it's actually pretty neat. Some amazing animation on the gigantic creates. Later on tho there's a ton of like hour-long "defend from waves" missions that if you're like me, you'll tire of and just set to easiest difficulty to finish the story already.

Kind of like the original OS where the gameplay was fun but after a while you were just plowing through it for the story. Definitely worth playing.
