Can we stop pretending that piracy is killing the industry now?
>>
>the pirate bay
>>
>>388234231
yes, this is the torrent website that everyone and their mothers are familiar with. what was your point here?
>>
>>388234351

Americans can't into piracy because they wouldn't download a car
>>
>"the developers are losing money on each game that is refunded, so they are desperately and quickly releasing it for free so people can demo it before purchasing and refunding it as a means to demo the game"
ftfy
>>
>>388234116
How can we be sure they didn't upload a tainted version of the game that fucks up your save or computer somehow?
>>
>Upload to pirate Bay
That's not how it works
>>
What are they dumb?
>>
Downloading it right now.
What am i in for?
>>
>>388234620
>shit guys were losing money on refunds what should we do?
>LETS UPLOAD A MALICIOUS VERSION THAT FUCKS WITH PEOPLE

Would be pretty silly, desu.
>>
>>388234620
They would never do that officially.
>>
>>388234676
The game has a very niche feel to it. I like it, but I could see why it would get refunded. If you're someone like DSP, who doesn't try anything and expects the game to tell you exactly what to do, it's very easy to see why this game gets refunded so highly.
>>
>pirate bay
are we 2005 again?
>>
Nice, I'm going to pirate it.
>>
>>388234825
Yes but has anyone actually idependently checked just to be 100% sure? It could be something as benign as the game deleting your save when you're 1 click away from finishing it and it would still make all your effort wasted.

what's that, blacked.com's new competition?
>>
>>388234924
You know I once thought games were shit for telling you what to do all the time.

Then I played Don't Starve and I didn't know what to do so I would look up guides. I'm a hypocrite aren't I?
>>
You don't upload anything of the data you want to share to piratebay. You make a torrent file which is simply used to find wherever the files may be seeded.
Nothing illegal about hosting torrents anyway.
>>
>>388234546
Seems like a sound decision to me. What, were you actually expecting they would do it out of kindness?
>>
>>388235302
There is a middle ground between constant handholding and zero direction. It's funny actually, The Long Dark opens with it specifically telling you "this is a hard game, it will not tell you what to do", and then you play the prologue which is entirely dedicated to telling you what to do.
>>
>>388235538
Fuck me, I meant Darkwood, not The Long Dark.

>>
>>388235302
Game that tell you what to do, outside of the controls in the instruction manual (none of that out of place tutorial shit) will always be garbage. The best games are the ones that tell you nothing so that you're surprised the whole fucking way through.
>>
>>388234546
Sounds good, when you don't release a demo you can expect refunds when people turn out to hate the game after they buy it.
>>
>>388235901
Doesn't matter. You can get it for free.

Context.

This frustration was further exacerbated when Acid Wizard looked at the reasons people were asking for refunds on Steam. "When we read the explanation from someone who wrote that he needed the refund because he didn't want his parents to be stressed out when seeing the bill at the end of the month... well, it made us feel quite bad," the developer lamented. "So we decided to do something about it!"

Denuvo accidentally proved that AAA games don't lose any noticeable percentage of sales from piracy, even in the first few weeks of release. Every cracked Denuvo title took at least a week or more to be placed onto torrents and there's virtually no statistical difference in sales trends between AAA Denuvo games and earlier AAA games without Denuvo.

Any shit like this is just pure PR, as always. At least we can stop pretending that piracy is harmful to anyone but the moron who downloads a tainted malware torrent.

No, pirating alone isn't single-handedly killing the vidya industry. It sure as fuck isn't helping though. PC is getting less and less games over time and indies are getting more and more cautious about taking the time to even bother making a game they know they aren't going to get paid for. PCfags are just shooting themselves in the feet.

>>388237569

Exodus isn't worked on they changed the name to covenant, and I pay for a Real-Debrid account for better quality... it's only like $2.50 a month. With a RD account you can get the Bubbles addon and it lets you stream torrents, so you can get those 12GB 1080p blu-ray rips to stream no problem.

It's not a bad strategy to deal with Steam's refund policy. Plus, it ultimately gets more people to try and eventually buy their game. It's also free advertisement

Steam takes a 30% cut of every sale, but when you refund something steam doesn't give back it's cut so the developer has to cough up valve's cut so the consumer gets a full refund.
So when you refund something you cost the developers more money than if you pirated it.
>>
>>388237569
Just the people that got a lawsuit. Matter of fact, Nintendo sued some Australian kid several years back after he uploaded a NSMB wii game to a torrent site before it got released to other regions and Nintendo won that case, being awarded $1.3 million.

That would always be an option, whether or not the developer goes out of their way to do it themselves.

The developers don't lose anything by providing their own piracy torrent. The only difference is that they can leech positive PR by providing their own "benevolent" torrent instead of some pirates or crackers getting the attention.

>>
>>388234116
The thing is, we had proven the whole 'buy it if you liked it from pirating' is utter bullshit with the first Humble Bundle. Apparently, if people can get away with paying for nothing, they will pay nothing. This would just more likely to just piss off any players that actually bought the game before they pulled this stunt.
>>
>>388250146

> top number of seeders

The PR is already taking an effect with how end users are voluntarily supporting the torrent. I really doubt that the developers organised 300 seeders themselves.
>>
Is it worth downloading or is it just muh walk around the woods and pick up planks of wood to craft shit game
>>
>>388250271

I don't understand how customers are at any net loss when piracy alternatives existed in the first place. Logically speaking, you're not at any loss here when other torrents already existed anyway that were being patronised by other people.

Trying to stamp out piracy entirely or make the accusation that it's detrimental to sales makes no logical sense and it's not backed by evidence. Denuvo proved that you don't see any significant sales increase before the DRM is cracked and piracy will always, always exist as a temptation so long as a product costs money.

Only a moron would complain about this. At the same time, only the gullible believe the developers are doing this out of any sense of charity.
>>
>>388250271

This. Humble Bundle usually doesn't benefit indie developers in any way outside of publicity. The majority of the money tends to go into fees, the different charity groups or NGOs, and the Humble Bundle team.

To be brutally honest, this is also why I don't like supporting Humble Bundles anymore (not usually, anyway). They're not a great way to support indie developers and it only encourages other people to support this system.

>>
>>388243942
What the fuck are you talking about. The p.c market share is increasing. More developers, especially the Japanese with their hate for p.c gaming, are beginning to see the value of p.c.

With most titles you probably won't see the same big payout on release day as a console but (if your game is good) you basically got guaranteed income trickling in.

And what's this attitude that your either a buyfag or piratefag. You can do both. I own 200+ games and I've pirated many more. Your not stealing a product, Your copying it. Even if you could completely stop piracy, I'd just end up buying less games because I'm not the type to risk or waste money.
>>
>>388252584

>>
>>388251197
But you can choose what percentage of your money goes to who?
>>
>>388253154
>>388252584
Game is Linear in terms of narrative, the major quests locations you need to progress in game rarely differs much and you usually have them marked on your map for you to beeline. It's everything in between and the resources you need to survive that's RNG.

>>388252731
Banshees activate by eye contact, do the opposite of this thing and stare at a wall until it goes away
>>
>>388254830
No harm in trying it I suppose, how far apart are the narrative sections and how aimless is the wandering and what not in between them?
>>
>>388254146

As an individual, I can. Guess what the overall trend tends to be?

I don't blame anyone donating the majority of their money to the NGOs or charities. That's reasonable. But that's all the more reason why it's for publicity instead of any immediate financial benefit to the indie devs. There are quite a few blog posts by indie devs who were dissatisfied with the payout that they received from the Humble Bundle, especially since the HB team is totally self-sufficient due to the cut they tend to receive.

It's publicity. They don't usually make much money off of it compared to other outlets like Steam, GOG, or itch.io.

Is there any evidence that AAA games sales have shot up as a direct result of Denuvo's protection? You could tell me to provide evidence all that you'd like, but the burden of proof is on Denuvo's patrons to demonstrate that this is really benefiting anyone in any tangible financial sense.

Compare the sales trends of Rise of the Tomb Raider (Denuvo) and the 2013 reboot (no Denuvo) for just one of many examples. Rise of the Tomb Raider did not appreciably spike up in sales just because it had full Denuvo protection for a full six months. This depends on what percentage you believe when people claim that piracy costs X % of sales. Even that percentage keeps changing, which makes the anti-piracy argument even more flimsy and goalshifting.

the game is pretty buggy though,
There are few bugs where you can progress the game and sometimes there is savegame curruption (given the fact there is only one save, youre basically fucked).

Also if you playing it, be sure to enable vsync, since the game has no fps limit.
Otherwise the game will try to tax your gpu to 100%. So you have 1000+fps ingame and your GPU will be frying at 90°C.

You're using some pretty retarded logic outside of the negligible amount that they genuinely lose through charge-back fees. Then again, I do agree we should gas all inferior races but that's a separate argument.

No, the Indiegogo content is one of the dreams you can get, it's really obvious when you see it.

>>388259979
It's no longer piracy when the creator gives it out for free, it's just free distribution at that point.
>>
>>388259984

You're right. Rise did in fact sell worse, and I'm even willing to be lenient towards the anti-piracy argument because there were platform issues and the marketing campaign didn't seem to be that successful. There's also naturally less hype surrounding a sequel than a full reboot.

Even so, if piracy was such a bad problem then Denuvo's protection should have easily made up that loss.
>>
>>388259835
Oh shit son I finally have a reason to own a 3DS, thanks for reminding me.
>>
>>388260095

There's no perfect system for refunds since there's no such thing as a "free lunch" here. Someone has to eat that charge-back cost and if anyone really believes that forbidding refunds entirely (and encouraging piracy) is better than eating the charge-back fees, then I invite anyone to seriously put that to the test with their own business.

Quite frankly, telling customers that they're not allowed to make a refund sounds even more financially dangerous than just eating the costs from a minority of assholes, especially if your prices are low enough that a bunch of darkies can afford it anyway.

The game sold poorly because of poor marketing and because they failed to hit the Christmas release date. Piracy is a good scapegoat for poor sales, but it's ultimately a pretty bullshit reason.

> observing crime as a natural phenomenon means that I'm defending it

I haven't pirated a game since I was a teenager, and I've bought most of those games later as an adult. I don't support piracy. Unless you're willing to lobotomize most of the population, you're never going to fully eliminate the presence of criminal activity. All you can do is recognize it as a reality (just like murder and rape) and establish a structure that disincentivizes it.

If we didn't have a system for civil lawsuits, more murders would take place because there would be no legal mediation for personal disputes. If war and displacement and a lack of stable relationships were all more common, then the number of rapes would be much higher than they hopefully are in your country. Etc.

There really isn't anything a game developer can do to decentivizes it other than make it DRM free and extremely convenient to buy, but the fact that Denuvo exists proves that doesn't work.

Sad reality is if you make games you have to be ok with taking the hit and accepting that people don't value your work enough to pay you.

>waaah, i supported the developers of a game i love!

It makes me think that some people are too worried about what other people get.

If it was worth buying it before, why does it become not worth it just because other can get it for less?
