afaik there are 3 currencies in the game. The first one is the paid one you can buy champions, cosmetic stuff and crates. Then there's the one where if you get repeats from a crate you can exchange it for cosmetic unlocks but it takes a while to farm it. Then there's the last one where you earn it by playing and completing daily challenges and I'm pretty sure this is the one for renting champions.

also there are 3 tiers of crates: backpacks (1 drop and usually shit), chests (2 drops and slightly better) and Reliquaries (3 drops and at least 1 of those is good).
You can buy backpacks with non premiun currency, but chests and reliquiaries are limited to leveling up or real money. Reliquaries only drop when you hit level 5, 10, 15... So actually unlocking champions by playing is going to take quite a long time.
