/backlog/ is a thread for all us /v/irgins who, due to an abundance of disposable income or just straight laziness, have developed a massive library of backlogged games that we never got around to playing or finishing and who now feel guilty about it.

The fight will be long and hard, but together we will succeed. Really bad games need not apply.

Here's how we're doing this.
>Post pictures of games not played.
>Have anons recommend which ones you play first and do the same for other anons.
>Discuss played games and general tactics on how to successfully organise, navigate and work through backlogs.
>Discuss reasons for backlogs and why we keep buying more games even though we don't finish them.
>If brave, post steamdb.info/calculator/ or equivalent stats.

Good luck anons!

I think I'll start with Alien vs Predator 2010.

>>
>>388235665
I say Dishonored 2, then maybe Yakuza 0 (haven't played but it looks good), and then Persona 5. I'd say go right ahead to P5 but the other two are MUCH shorter, so you should get those two out of the way before diving in.
>>
I've been using Completionator as motivation and it's kinda worked, but my backlog is so fucking huge that it's like wittling at Mt. Everest with a pickaxe. Also I recently decided to start trying some F2P multiplayer games and that doesn't help. Oh, and since OpenMW has had a stable release I decided to finally replay Morrowind.
Currently actively playing from my backlog Rogue Legacy and Dragon Warrior II.
>>
Do you guys sell your games when you complete them? Most are mine are near worthless. The only thing I sold recently was FFXV which I immediately realised was a piece of shit.

I can't stop adding more games on top and I don't know why. I'm not even playing them fast enough to ever finish. I didn't finish Persona 5 until like last week and I got it at launch. Resisting the urge of buying like four games right now. Currently playing Nocturne and Sonic Mania. Here's some of what I might dive into next, give recommendation.

>Bravely Default
>FF7
>Bloodborne
>The Witcher 3 (kinda shit)
>Ratchet and Clank (remake)
>Hollow Knight
>LISA
>Transistor
>Fire Emblem Awakening
>Kingdom Hearts Dream Drop Distance
>Danganronpa: Ultra Despair Girls
>Devil May Cry HD Collection
>Shadow of the Colossus
>Ghost Trick
>Torchlight II
>Fallout: New Vegas
>Mass Effect Trilogy
>KotOR

I don't feel like thinking of more right now. I'm going to stick with what I'm playing now but I want to shrink the backlog to nearly zero over the next few years.
>>
>>388235774
Tiny and Big is pretty fun and decently short so it doesn't overstay its welcome. If you're looking for something to quickly dispatch off your list that's my suggestion.
>>
Bought Breath of the Wild in March, I'm set on finishing it tonight. Other than that I have Half Life 2 and its episodes to play through but that shouldn't take long considering the lack of collectible shit to worry about.

>>
>>388236486
Play Shadow of the Colossus, then LISA, and then get yourself balls deep in Bloodborne.

Also, don't play Ultra Despair Girls, it's bad. The gameplay is really mediocre, sluggish third-person shooter affair with bad puzzles and the story barely adds anything of value to the series lore. Plus the way it crowbars the parents of previous games' characters in is REALLY forced and pointless. Watch a playthrough or read a Wiki plot outline if you must.

>>
>>388242740
I have around 300 games and it took me years to finish most of them or at least play some to the point of losing an interest and lable it as shit and hide it. Game to game was hidden and there were left 30 of them, which are pretty hard and long, damn it was hard and last 10 were the most hard and time consuming. It was a pure agony to wish to finish but lack of mood sometimes.
Now I buy new games and truly enjoing them with no looking back to a backlog and if I have interest in some hidden game I would play it and actually enjoy without thinking about backlog and shit. Fucking freedom man.
>>
>>388243891
But I have dozens of games that I want to keep track of. There is also benefit in playing games in certain order. For example, I like to have one "big" game that I focus on during the day, some another more relaxed game to play while eating/relaxing on PC and finally some story driven game to play before going to sleep(preferably on handheld or at least playable on laptop).

All this planning to get most out of your games at every single moment in time requires thought. That's why I keep a backlog.

Because when you have too much choice it becomes impossible to make a concrete decision. People here commonly attribute it to autisim or /v/irginity, but sitting in front of a huge list of fun things to do and just staring at it without starting a single activity is an extremely common thing, not exclusively related to vidya.
>>
>>388244167
Can I ask what your life is like? Are you a NEET? Didn't it feel odd equating video games to work? I feel the same way about the backlog too but I try to stop myself every time I start treating games like work because it fucks with my enjoyment of them. It also takes up time which I need to allocate into other things (though I'm decent at managing time if I really want to).

>just staring at it without starting a single activity is an extremely common thing
What evidence do you have for this aside from your anecdote?
I for one can easily just choose something randomly from a list and concentrate on it until I'm done.
What makes your anecdotal evidence better than mine?
>>
>>388244890
>why do you guys
Motherfucker you just asked for an anecdote and he gave you one. Obviously it's common if we have so many people here with the same issue.
>>
>>388244890
Not him but I'm curious about something.

Do you only play one game at a time? I need that 2-5 to fill my day. And I even have a job.
>>
>>388244651
NEET, but it wasn't a work-like for me it was like a challenge and an obsession and self hatred what I bought a lot of games long time ago and do not playing them, and I just started doing that actually playing anything I want from a backlog and after years there were left not much and I pushed a little more harder with an obsession to fucking done with it. It was like a hobby and I had and have others, so it's not like my whole life at all but just a longass list of games money wasted which I MUST to finish as soon as possible and I did it.

>2-5 to fill my day
I mean, you don't really. You could always do something other than play video games.
>>
>>388245458
Wasn't really my question but I get you.
What I meant was, do you usually ONLY play a single game per day? Like, I have games that I play after work, on the evening, and before going to sleep. Add to that games that I rotate every other game.
>>
>>388245698
>Add to that games that I rotate every other day*
>>
>>388245698
Yes I usually focus on one game for a week or a month at a time, but I also have several different hobbies besides vidya so it doesn't take up all my free time.
>>
>>388245915
The games that I have on "rotation" usually take up weeks and month of my time.

> but I also have several different hobbies besides vidya so it doesn't take up all my free time.
Maybe that's it. I just don't have anything else, nor am I interested in anything else.
>>
>>388246049
>nor am I interested in anything else.

>>
>>388246253

>>
>>388246253
Everything? Of course not.
But I have tried
>playing guitar/piano
>riding BMX, snowboarding, park our
Though I liked all 3 and did them for years at a time, I just lost interest at some point

Maybe going to raves? I still love electronic music and I used to go raves every now and then. While fun, it's not something I bother anymore.

I did that in 2015, the "game a week" challenge where you try to beat a game for every week of the year. It was fun and I cleared a lot of my backlog.

But I haven't been able to do it again since, been too busy.
>>
>>388251332
This just makes me sad. For games to become such a chore you feel you need to complete that you're willing to just edit your saves. What's the point?
I guess deep down I'm just hoping you played some of them legit and had a good time. I love the Disgaea games but I know they'd be the first target of save editing based on the mentality you've presented.

Conker has a lot of bullshit, I don't feel any responsibility to ever finish that. Warioware is a nice afternoon and shouldn't take long. New Vegas takes a long time but the world building is amazing.

If I had to go with any of them, it would probably be Super Mario Sunshine. It's a good summer game to play before the season is over and shouldn't take you long(that is if you're in a current summer hemisphere). I can't see myself playing that at any other point of the year, just like I'm more likely to play a souls game during the winter.

The nature of /v/ doesn't really lend itself to posting that kind of information easily. They might have done what you described and simply not posted it.

Everyone plays games differently and you shouldn't really let that impact how you enjoy games yourself. I for one long ago threw out the idea of a backlog. I hop from game to game playing how I feel and accepting there are maybe excellent games I'll simply never play. I don't want to turn gaming into chores, so I try to keep my selection process organic. Still it's nice to discuss with others even if we don't agree on the methodology.

I save it in excel so I have an editable list of games correctly aligned (with saved color-coding) then take it to paint. Each update to the list takes twenty minutes most since it's building off of the same thing. The only reason why I haven't updated it recently is because I've been really into these games and I have even more coming out in like, a week. September is going to be a hell of a month for the Vita.

Also this. I have separate page with details about the game. Namely, unfinished games have details of what I did last while finished, but not plat'd games, have details on what I need to do or why I never finished getting the plat for them.

It's quite literally a video game journal and I don't care enough to share it outside of the overview.
It helps me manage my time better too since I get motivated to play games I stopped at due to not forgetting what happened last or where I need to go, as well as help me when I'm too lost in backlog hell to decide on what to do

Thank you, I also believe it's healthier but to each their own.

It's interesting seeing backlogs of games people feel they have to complete and knowing had I forced myself into the games people are talking about I would have had a fucking horrible time. It took me months for the Disgaea games to finally click and I know if I had forced myself through one I would have never played another again.
>>
>>388255394
My backlog is less "games I need to complete" and more "games I own".
The PSN store is quite shit so it's helpful to remember the more obscure stuff you'd buy during super deep sales but never get around to downloading or trying out.

For the love of god don't play the original. I put over 100 hours into the original but I haven't touched it since the day Rebirth released.

It's also a weird backlog game to have. It can take an exceptionally long time as the definition of "complete" may vary from person to person, and if you really enjoy it you'll still be playing it after you're done as the item pool and character selection will finally be complete.

I usually just throw all the games I get in bundles or for free into my backlog list if I've at least heard of it.

If not then it goes straight into the "bundle trash" list.
>>
>>388255578
Oh my god yes, the PSN is a nightmare regardless of where you're access it from.
The site can have you scrolling through pages of purchases. The download list on PS3 and Vita breaks after you've bought too much and stops sorting properly by date. And PS4 will keep demos in your game library until the end of time. It's such a garbage system where I have to know what I'm looking for before I go searching or there's no point.
>>
>>388256376
You sound like me just before I gave up categorizing things on Steam and gave up on a backlog.

Steam is a very slippery slope and once you pass a certain threshold of unplayed games it becomes nearly impossible to go back.
>>
>>388256468
By this point I just use the greasemonkey script on PC if I ever need to delve into the download list. It filters out demos, DLC, and everything else that isn't a base game while also sorting out games by platform. It's pretty useful but I still wish Sony didn't have such complete shit UI for their stores and lists. Like what the fuck, it's no wonder the site breaks every othe rweek.

I can beat some this game's in a day if I put gaming spirit in me and stop being distracted with meaningless nonsense. A podcast helps me stay focus on game incase the game is not immersive or engaging. It's dangerous to have too many rpgs as your backlog. I can understand your anxiety, it all depends on how you frame it.
From the details you've laid out you have two months to:
>Beat 3 games
>One Dungeon
>Variable amount of playtime that can be completed at any point.
All of that sounds reasonable, with Crash being the most time consuming. If you really want to do it though it's completely doable. If your backlog is impacting you that much though, it might be best just to ignore it. You shouldn't feel you have to complete anything. If I was gearing up for Mario Odyssey I'd probably play some 64 in the month leading up to release to get in the right head space but that's just me.
What's important is to go easy on yourself. Enjoy the games you play and don't worry about getting to all of them. There are plenty of people here with a far greater backlog that they may never complete in their lifetime.

Most of these are ok 7/10 games or 7.5/10 and some genuine 8.0 or 8.5 games. A had a tone of fun playing some of them. I'm not that kind of person who is interested in collecting and playing mass market nonsense that everyone played like metal gear, final fantasy or persona.
>>
>>388265849
Thanks for the motivation anon. But my problem is that I feel by not having a game beat there's something else I could be playing instead. So even when one game drags on too long I start to get kinda anxious. Which makes me want to play it less which leads to a loop. I've started ignoring longer games for that reason now. I think after P5 and XC2 I'm going to totally lay off lengthy games like that.
Also Crash isn't a must beat for me like that. It's definitely one of those games I can come back to whenever and make some progress, even if it's completing a level or two. Playing SM64 involves setting up my Wii U again and I don't feel like doing it really. I also tend to ignore the genre of upcoming games so that way when I play them it's all fresh and I'm not doing one platformer/rpg after another.

Basically, it's completely doable to complete all those games before release but bear in mind if you're not feeling it yet then playing Mania might be the perfect jumping off point. Just try not to spend much time on 1, that game has a lot of problems.

Furi
MadMax

RabiRibi

I am an emulationfag and I found a way to effectively kill my backlog without getting bored, I am going to share some tips:

>choose a handful of games (6 max) of different genres (action, RPG, puzzle, racing, etc)
>NEVER play more than one RPG at the same time
>take breaks in between RPGs so you won't get burned out
>if the game has focus on story (like an RPG) never stop playing it for too long
>if you need to force yourself to play, if the game requires a lot of focus (like a platformer) its okay to take the occasional break
>intentionally edge yourself by cutting your playthroughs short so you will have something to look forward to

Those are the ones I can think about
>>
Darkwood
Bayonetta
Hollow Knight

DOOM

What a nice idea for a thread.

I keep a spreadsheet with games I own and have/have not beaten, which helps me feel some sense of progress since I track by month, but the games on the left are the ones that have just kept on falling by the wayside. Right is all the other games I have some desire to beat.

Shantae. You can 100% that game relatively quick, it's a nice palette cleanser type thing. After that, maybe go for Portal 2.

Go for Bayonetta. Just sit yourself down and at the point you want to quit, see if you can push yourself just a bit further and if you still don't want to go, then stop.

Also, probably avoid Hyrule Warriors for a while. That game's got so much content that it's basically endless, even without the DLC.

Big fan of Berserk and completed the game on release.
It's an alright Musou but you've got to be a pretty big fan and not mind the fact you'll be playing as Guts 95% of the time. Getting the Berserker Armor is very satisfying and is what will push you through majority of the story. Like with any Musou you should also have something going on in the background like a podcast or something as it's never going to need all of your focus.

Bayo could be a good idea since the story is not that important and the game doesn't take too long to beat. I kinda put shrek on hold months ago. Some of the objectives felt like house chores. The game is polished tho. I'm not a hipster tho, it's just that most of the popular games that are talked to death have been spoilt to me and playing them is a waste of my precious time. I gain no experience playing a popular, well known or main stream game that has spoilt to me. That's reason why i'll never even play nier automata or persona 5 unless I'm extremely bored and have no backlog. Curiosity of obscure or forgetten games kinda brought my interest back into gaming again. Your free to like your Games and I'm free to like mines. What matters in the end of the day is that I'm having a good time playing games.

I'd say try to finish the games you're already on but if you want something new, go with Nier.
Assuming you're talking about Automata it's a fantastic game that plays pretty smoothly meaning you aren't likely to hit any roadblocks that you have had with the other games.
>>
>>388274370
It's the first Nier.
It's less that I've had roadblocks with the first games and more that real life stuff distracts me from vidya sometimes and in Nocturne and Bloodborne's case, it ended up killing my tempo and vibe with them. BotW just feels like it's dragging on and I've only beaten one dungeon, though I've spent most of my time fucking around in the open world.

Search Silent Hill on the archive and you're bound to run into it.

And you don't have to play the original before 2, but I recommend playing it at some point, and especially if you ever want to play 3.
The first Silent Hill is still an excellent game, and I would argue that its low tech visuals actually lend to the horror rather than take away from it.

Did you just unironically explain the appeal of Shrek 2 to me?

Spoilers are not the entire game anon. By refusing to play games that have been spoiled, you're just hurting yourself. Like the old corny statement goes, it's about the journey and not the destination. The last three pages of a book are not the whole book and you shouldn't treat it like that. Nier Automata is engaging because you gain an understanding of the relation between 2B and 9S not because you know where that relationship ends up. Similarly much as Persona 5's ending plays its part I'd argue what's far more important in that game is how you personally spend your days, who you decide to make friends with and which girl you want to plow. Spoilers don't actually spoil games, the only thing that actually spoils games is you refusing to play them.

>Your free to like your Games and I'm free to like mines.
I also enjoy holes in the ground where you can unearth rare gems.
>What matters in the end of the day is that I'm having a good time playing games.
Exactly. I just hope you read a bit of what I have to say and maybe consider playing a game you've seen spoilers for. /v/ will continue to spoil good games, you just need to hide under a rock or accept that the emotions felt through playing a game can't be summed up through one sentence.
>>
>>388276449

not that anon, but I understand what other anon has in mind. When you're bombarded with gameplay footage, random enemies, boss battles, reveals and in the end you come to /v to see random pieces of information about popular game, you tend to stray away from it, because it doesn't feel like a unique experience anymore. On the contrary when I play some random forgotten game on my PS2 I'll always be surprised what is about to happen. The less I know about a game the better, it's not even about spoilers but also about setting, game mechanic, or type of the game. That's why I enjoyed Minority Report lately and Samurai Warriors before that.

Not exactly a backlog problem but I think it sort of relates.
I don't have a backlog, not because I'm efficient with my gaming, but because I no longer own any games and consoles. In fact, I've not played a game going on 4 years now.
I want nothing more than to get back into MY hobby.

Yeah, I get that. It's always best to avoid spoilers if possible and it does take away a bit. A game is quite good if you're in the dark but you've got to be a bit lenient which it sounds like you understand.

The other anon though sounded like he wasn't. He said very firmly that he would never play a Metal Gear, Final Fantasy, Persona or Nier game ever. His justification was that since life is so short, it was a waste of his time to play a game he knew the ending of. My response was to that line of reasoning.

I like all kinds of games, obscure or otherwise. But when somebody is a dick to you on /v/ that's not justification for you to put up an ironclad wall between yourself and those games.

Disgaea 5 is amazing, by far the best Disgaea game to the point where it's difficult to play other Disgaea games after it.

>>

>>
>>388277532
That's quite the problem to have. I'm not sure about a list of /v/ approved games.
I think what would be more useful is for you to tell us what games you enjoyed playing before you stopped playing. If we had an idea of where you're coming from, it might be easier to tell you where you might want to go. Instead of just giving a laundry list of games in genres you may not even care for.
>>
>>388278279
Do one or two SMT games a year.
>>
>>388278838
I'm assuming you're planning to mod the shit out of the second list, because otherwise you'd have to have a very old computer to not be able to run those.

Where are you in Disgaea 2 end game? I was just real burnt out by the time I made it to the Land of Carnage and needed to grind felonies. So much so that I've actually platinumed 5 in the time I've taken to go back to it.
>>
I have three different ways to work on my backlog, it just depends how i feel at the time. First is to pick a game I really want to play. Second is to pick a large game eating up space. Third is to pick a game I suspect I might not like and therefore am likely to strike it from my backlog in short order. In each case I tend to prioritise games with a standard campaign, like shootans and RPGs, over games with high replayability, like 4Xes and shmups. And yet I spend most of my time replaying vidya I've already played over and over.

It's not a great system.
>>
>>388279710
My highest is level 1500. I did all the endings and killed 2/4 Laharls before taking a break so I could unlock and finish everything all in one final cycle.
>>
>>388280126
Lol, my highest is level 2100 and I don't feel like I'm even close to finishing the end game. Seeing guides to beat the final superboss Pringer X makes it looks like you need a whole squad of 9999s on top of absolutely perfect items for them. Then there's the whole Dark World to complete where some of the levels you can't even just plow through with high level characters. If you're really committed to getting it off your backlog, I think it's going to take a long time. I've already accepted that it may take me years, especially after getting my fix recently with Disgaea 5.

Yeah. I even played through Pure Smile so I'm pretty confident in my ability.

Hey sorry for late reply. I'm the og anon. I will play those but when I forget about everything that has been spoilt to me. As for persona 5 it's a no no because of the central theme, the high school meme and the artstyle. I kinda have gotten tired of anime artstyle and it seems repetitive as fuck. Not trying to shit on your preference and taste but the teenager nobodies and whimps saving the day nonsense has been done to death. The mc is a silent protagonist so that was an instant turn off for me even when i willing to give it a fourth look. I wanted to see what was so special about the p5 but all I ever saw, the afro teacher guy did nothing wrong, waifu and Anne threads. There's dating but no sex scenes and it's a m rated game? Not trying to bait but after my experience with tales of xillia and ffxv i've lost interest in jrpgs as a whole. Their game worlds and story don't hook me at all. Playing lost odyssey recently reminded me why i use to love that genre so much when i was teenager.

I'll play nier auto eventually when it becomes cheap and forgetten by me and everyone else.

I also killed Prinny Baal in a similar amount of time but he sounds like he was severely underpowered compared to Pringer X. Prinny Baal didn't require me to get Yoshitsuna or reincarnate from level 9999.

Just looking at guides there are huge paragraphs on how to beat Pringer X while it seems guides boil Prinny Baal down to "just hit him real hard and he'll die".

Mine is a disaster.

I recently pulled Binary Domain and Impossible Creatures out of that black hole. Enjoyed both quite a lot, so there are gems here I guess.

What should I play next?

I'd go through Fallout 1 and 2!

So many top tier mods for those two titles now in recent years especially.

Life is Strange is pretty linear, and shouldn't really take you more than two days to finish. If you're an achievement whore, you can also load a guide up during the episodes to get those optional photographs.
Mirror's Edge is quite short, but enjoyable.

VVVVVV for something quick, Sleeping Dogs for something longer.

I'm going through my Xbox 360 backlog, I just finished Batman arkham origins, now I've got destroy all humans, lost odyssey, skate and mercenaries 2.
I was past halfway through Dah and I lost my save file, and now the Xbox is not reading the fucking game if it is offline, I'm halfway through LO, but it got a bit boring, I started skate last week and I love it, I had to get used to the camera being so close compared to 2 and 3, but I love the map, favorite map out of the 3 games.
I'm gonna play skate tomorrow.

>>
RE1 RE
Bully
Doom 3
Don't Starve
Hotline Miami 2
Serious Sam 1 & 2
Quake 1-4

which ones are worth playing through lads
>>
>>388294126
Bully for sure, I'd play that first, resident evil, HM2, quake 1 and 2
>>
>>388294126
REmake, Bully, Quake 1 and HM2 are all fantastic games.
Serious Sam 1 is alright if you really enjoy corridor 90s-style FPS but it's kind of a budget title. Sam 2 is just worse all-around, most people skip it.

Quake 2 is a step downward from the first game, Quake 3 is in a completely different, multiplayer-only style, and Quake 4 is just okay, pretty forgettable.
