Took me four read throughs before I realized that I wasn't missing any sort of hints and the story is bland as fuck and poorly told.

Leper, Crusader, Man-at-Arms were all about how those characters try to do something for the world. Abomination is pure tragedy even if entirely self-centered. Most of the female characters are selfish cunts out for self-enrichment (gold/jewelry for the Grave Robber, artifacts for the Antiquarian, knowledge for the Plague Doc), except the Arbalest who suffered an actual tragedy. But the Arbalest's story doesn't give her any reason to care about the Darkest Dungeon so it doesn't fit well, while the other three at least get money/loot/corpses from the dungeon.

Most of the male characters suffered some tragedy that somehow ruined their lives and made them seek redemption in the dungeon, except the Occultist who's just out for power but who at least has strong ties to the dungeon, and the Bounty Hunter who's just a mean motherfucker out to kill bad guys.

People started votebombing the Steam reviews because they hated the corpse mechanic.

Before they added corpses, there often was no real reason to attack anything but the front row, both because it was easier to reach and because killing the front row caused the back row to automatically move forward, often preventing them from using their best skills. This also made back-row targeting skills less useful in general, because killing enemies meant you'd have nothing left to target. With the corpse update, they both made it so the back row wouldn't automatically move forward (since there'd be corpses in the way) and made it more important to take them out quickly. This made a lot of idiots extremely upset for reasons that are still a bit of a mystery.

Not even the heart attack mechanic made so many people butthurt as the corpse mechanic did.

I don't think it's about difficulty as much as it is about not being able to adapt. A lot of players were whining about having to waste turns to hack their way through corpses, which is a clear sign that they were stuck in the old meta of only ever attacking the front row.

Now enough time has passed that even the most dense idiots realize that it's a good idea to at least bring some options for taking out the back rows directly and nobody thinks corpses are a big deal anymore.

In certain situations the occultist's single target burst heal is just better than the vestals rather slow and steady and aoe heal.
With the right items you can reduce his bleed chance to almost 0% and increase even his non heals to like 20 per heal on average

Darkest dungeon is a game of averages.
Some bosses like for example in the crimson court do too high single target damage to deal with for the vestal, even 15 every turn isnt enough. So you gotta either deal with it with buffs or pull out some really big single target heals or you're gonna get a hero deaths door'd every second turn.
I'm not saying the vestal is inferior to the occultist as a healer, just that there are situations where he fits the bill better.
And people complain about muh 0 heal plus bleeds as much as they want, on average he's gonna heal crazy amounts with effectively 0 chance of bleeds if you put the right items on him.

In my opinion Occultist is more a utility class compared to Vestal which is more a single focus one as a healer. Wyrd Reconstruction is great on average but that's ignoring Occultist's other utilities like great damage skills with high crit chance and bonus damage to Eldritch, the most common enemy type in the toughest areas, a marking tool, damage reduction tool, and a stun. Vestal meanwhile has very lackluster combat skills, an okay stun and the only AoE heal in the game which alone makes her god-tier against attacks that put multiple characters on death's door. They both have completely different uses.

Wyrd's bleed is overhyped though, especially since heroes bleed resist increases heavily with resolve levels while Wyrd's bleed chance barely increases per level up.

I have done about 20 champion level missions with occultists on the team and used one for the first two bosses of the crimson court and the second and third darkest dungeon missions. I could count the times in all those missions that I actually had someone bleed from the occultist on one hand and most of those were early on when I didnt have the flesh heart and the crimson court occultist trinket which reduces bleed chance Guess how many heroes I lost due to low occultist heals? 0 point fucking 0 because RNG doesnt work like that and in most cases when people complain about occultist RNG killing their heroes they most likely would have lost them anyway because they are shit at the game.

It's actually the final bit of bait the game throws at you to get you to lose to the final boss. It's not male or female that's the biggest link to how ready they are to die, it's their preferred position. Front liners volunteer for death, mid-fielders are ambivalent for the most part, and back liners almost entirely horrorified. So you pussy out and kill the volunteer, thus fucking up your positions and dooming the run to a wipe.
