i'm actually going to start japanese classes next week.

ive lived there for a little more than a year but i couldn't grasp the lçanguage that well, i was also busy enjoying myself too much.

i plan to go back there one day i maybe lieve there for the rest of life. that country is fucking amazing an has everything i ever wanted in life so ill fight for it.

i have no idea how to get a decent job there though since i just finished college
>>
In my last year of highschool I started downloading and attempting to crack untranslated eroge.
I picked up enough Japanese in doing so that I can mostly decipher regular sentences. I thought about taking some classes when I started university, but I realized I'd want to kill myself if I were associated with the kind of people taking Japanese 101 at my college and being somewhat self taught doesn't qualify me to skip the beginner classes.

Nah, I learned it for porn. It's nice to play games, and watch TV with it too though.

People really don't understand just how much porn is completely untranslated. It's so fucking weird to see people talking about how much they like an artist, when they haven't even read a tenth of his work because barely any of it is translated.

Here's a tip if some of you want to learn Japanese.
Motivation gets run out quickly. You need to establish discipline and follow your schedule, it's the only efficient way.

>>

What's worse is that most of it is never available in the first place.
Most of what is sold at comiket is never uploaded, no chance to get translated and no chance to be read even if you know the language.

My native language is Spanish although I speak and write better in English. Learning Japanese was pretty easy for probably because I actually went to school to learn instead of being a NEET autist like everyone in this thread. You can't learn a language on you own without talking to other people. I found that way better than learning from books.

At most you would be able to play a couple japanese porn strategy games that don't suck ass (ie. from AliceSoft), and let's be honest: there's already so much translated porn even if i learnt japanese i'd have to skip reading 99% of untranslated shit.

Duolingo gets a lot of flack, but the emails and phone notifications really help with establishing the habit. Anki on the phone too has notifications, but they're less intrusive and therefore easier to ignore.

I'm still riding the high of being able to read anything in Japanese at all. Breezed through the level one graded readers, so I have a few of those "Masterpieces every child should read by 10" in the mail right now. I'll see how well I do on those before I try anything more advanced.

I wanted to go to school to learn but my state doesn't offer Japanese courses. I had to learn online, which turned out ok. I read more than I speak to natives.
Luckily, there are a lot of apps to use for both text chatting speaking over the phone, which I would be doing anyway one girl sent me nudes and asked me to come visit her
>>
I started about 2 months ago. Thought i would give up at Kanji but I've managed to make myself keep at it everyday so far. Anytime i can pick out something and read it even if its only a word or two it helps me keep going knowing I'm making progress.

Not "just", but one of the many reasons I study Japanese.

>>388227210
I have been toying with it for years, but after taking a class in Uni for it I have been able to pick pieces out of 4koma, online stuff, and even news pieces. Its always encouraging.
>>
>>388226303
That doesn't really apply if you're following specific artists/circles. Especially some less popular ones. Jeanna Deack's latest isn't translated, Free-style only has one or two works translated, fucking Maron Maron still has a couple things untranslated. And then fucking Spermatank. I've wanted to read it for ten fucking years and only one or two chapters have been translated.
>>
>>388218079

I did several years ago. The funny thing is I don't play games in Japanese as often anymore.
>>
>>388218079
No, but I considered learning japanese just to read futa doujins
>>
>>388222674

>>
I learned well enough to read kana and most common kanji. Though I cannot pronounce anything and couldn't form a sentence if my life depended on it. I will likely never speak to a japanese person, so when I was going through my courses and resources I skipped anything having to do with speaking. It worked okay. I can read most subtitles. Learning to read kanji isn't as hard as learning to read and write them. Just use anki and you'll get it.
>>
>>388227217
>It's crazy that you think translated shit is enough
My backlog is over 5k if i'm being selective (and over 10k if lax), by the time i finished fapping to everything i want to read right now i'd have to add all the new translated mangas released during that time period.

>I guess if you get off to a single 20 page doujin you could make do as a vanillafag
Extension has nothing to do with how vanilla or hardcore the content within each piece is, and there's plenty of tankoubons too (which of course take several faps to finish).

>>388227382
>For a translated porno I can raise you 20 untranslated ones that are better than it.
Even if that were true, it wouldn't make me not want to read what i already bookmarked.

>Personally i'm constantly switching authors and fetishes so i never get tired of any style.
That's also a fair point. But like I said, I've been wanting to read Spermatank for years. That demon with the different 'levels' written on her body parts gets me rock hard every time And one of my favorite things about Jeanne Dack is the situations he writes, not necessarily his art. And I always love the way he doesn't outright state the character's age, but says something like "Jenny: 30 years old - had a kid at 15." and the character next to her will have a description like "Sarah: Jenny's daughter."

I have, after a while though I realized that almost any game I'm interested in playing will be translated eventually, its just a matter of waiting a year or so. The amount of effort put in, just to play a game a year early is simply not worth it. If I'm going to spend my time learning something I would rather it be a useful skill that could eventually lead to employment. Not that you can't get employed as a translator if you are good enough, but it just isn't something I would be interested in doing.

>I realized that almost any game I'm interested in playing will be translated eventually, its just a matter of waiting a year or so.
This is complete fantasy. I get it, you didn't want to put in the time, whatever, just don't make shit up. You can't just go "oh, I never wanted to play that game anyway" when someone tells you a patch would be infeasible and nobody will bother with it.

There are literally thousands of games that came out DECADES ago that still don't have translation patches. And chances are pretty high that unless we develop an AI that can deal with all this shit in a nanosecond, a lot of them never will be translated. But let's assume, for the sake of argument, that you aren't interested in a single one of those games, and everything you want is going to be translated within a year.

Translating from Japanese to English isn't good. The best in the business can do some passable work, but you'll never see anything from them. If you're extremely lucky, you'll get a translation spearheaded by a complete autist who happens to be good at English prose, and has more than a week's worth of experience. In most cases, you'll get a college student who is running the text through Google Translate, or just makes up all the lines he doesn't understand. The pro industry isn't any better, the translators who work for localisation companies are about as good as the voice actors who work for them, which is to say "they're absolute garbage and any of them with any skill move onto a real industry where they get paid 10 times the amount".

Kanji isn't that awful when you get used to it (though even years later I'll say that the way the Japanese have handled it is pure shit). Grammar is worse.

The problem is people study in ineffective ways or feel so pressured by the number that they rush through it.

With some experience reading, I'm honestly glad Kanji exists. So many words use the same pronunciation, and with Japanese's lack of spaces, it would be a fucking nightmare to tell where one word ends and another begins, and even to tell which word it's supposed to be without kanji.
>>
>>388238917
Thats one of those feelings you only experience once you've come a long way. Kanji really does indeed make things easier.

>>388238917

Oh definitely. I've been reading Nip for years and would never want to see kana only. It's just that the way the Japanese have handled kanji pronunciations and sometimes even meanings is absolute shit compared to the Chinese. That's why you can almost never be sure of a name pronunciation if you haven't heard it or seen it written in furigana/hiragana at some point.

All those poorly translated titles of the past is one of the things that got me to learn Nip. Some people don't care, so it wouldn't matter for them though. Localizations that aren't from Nintendo seem to be fairly good these days from what I've seen (which isn't a lot). Dragon Quest localizations are still bad though from a localization point of view, though a lot of people who don't know Japanese enjoy them, so I guess that's all that matters.

You seem to be under the impression that my life goal is to play as many video games as possible. I have other things I do with my life. I have no interest in playing old games with shitty mechanics, because at the end of the day, if I only cared about stories, I would go read a book. Gameplay is 70% of my interest. Even if I tried playing every good game ever, I would probably die before being able to complete them all.

If you are interested in playing obscure Japanese games then you will definitely need to learn Japanese. I like playing good video games and I'm okay with being unable to play mediocre or bad games.

>I get it, you didn't want to put in the time, whatever, just don't make shit up.
What shit am I making up? There is literally not a single game I'm interested in that I can think of that is Japanese that isn't actively being translated, or hasn't already been translated. I never claimed that every "good" game ever has been translated, just that what I want is or will be.
>>
>>388247514
You didn't even respond to the second part of my post, which stated that game translations are a fucking dumpster fire.

I wouldn't read a J>E translation if you paid me.
>>
I'd rather not.Hell i barely even play jap games.
>>
>>388247807
I play games for gameplay, its pretty hard to fuck up translating that part. I've played my fair share of J>E translated games and groaned at the obviously mistranslated things, or dialogue where the translators were far too liberal with their translation. I personally prefer subs over dubs because most English voice acting is pretty bad. At the end of the day though, its just not worth it to me to learn Japanese when all I want to do is play the damn game for the gameplay which remains perfectly intact.

I'm not going to tell you why you should enjoy games but I think that people like me that predominantly play jrpg's and do so for the combat and character customization really have no reason to bother learning Japanese.

the guide on the reddit for Japanese learners is really good (hurr durr back2Reddit am I right pedes :DDDD). Heisig learning the Kanji are mandatory. If you don't want to learn Kanji don't waste time with Japanese and learn more English than wasting your time with Japanese.

>Translating from Japanese to English isn't good. The best in the business can do some passable work

I don't know why you people make it sound like all translators/localizers are just "passable" at best. I mean yeah, I went through a phase similar to that (but not that extreme) during my first year of study too, but I got over it. Since then I've learned to call the shit jobs shit and the great jobs great. Though it's probably just the first year people/eternal weeaboos that say that.
>>
Why can't brainlets understand the very logical reasons why some people choose to learn Japanese?
>>
>>388253201

Some people just see it as a waste of time and they get mad when other people spend their time how they want.

I picked up Japanese solely for Fuuka and to play Persona 3 so that I can see it without awkward translations and localizations

Because brainlets project a lot. When they hear about people learning Japanese for videogames/anime/whatever they go through the following brain process: "I have no reason to learn Japanese for these things, therefore everyone else has no reason to learn it either".

To do what, read the Bible, also translations? Boethius, Augustine, etc are great in English with the right translation.
>Sanskrit
Why would you learn a ritual language? Just read the Vedas and Upanishads in translation and you're basically done.
>French
All the French philosophy is good in translation, and the only novel worth reading is The Count of Monte Cristo.
>Spanish
Just read Don Quixote in translation and move on
>German
The small handful of novels worth reading are fine in translation. Skip Young Werther.
>Russian
Sure, but you could just learn a little bit about the culture of the relevant periods, and then read all the great Russian novels in translation and get 95% of the significance anyways. Remember that it's not worth talking to actual Russians, either.

Italian might be worth it just for Dante, but then again Dorothy Sayers' translations of the Divine Comedy are so fucking good that Dante himself would probably approve them.

No other language than Japanese is worth learning for porn or comics, and saying you read and understood Murakami in the original Japanese is sure to get a ton of (you)s. I am a Cat is also ok.

Man, I've only read one Russian novel and the translator just stopped trying halfway through. And the sequel will probably never be translated, but it didn't feel like a series that needed more than one book, truth be told.
