Never played Skyrim. Explain to someone like me why everyone loves the game yet /v/ overwhelmingly hates it.

Because it managed to achieve CoD and AssCreed levels of mainstream success which meant that its primary demographic was complete normies.

Go to any group of actual gamers and everyone hates Skyrim. Even the faggots on reddit and gaf generally hate that shit. Everyone can point to the game being a buggy and broken unpolished mess, the writing being absolutely terrible and the gameplay being totally mindless.

But the normies this game is for don't care even slightly about things like writing or combat depth. To them it's just an epic fus roh dah dragon fighting game that they can play for an hour at the most a couple times a week when their girlfriends let them. They don't play it enough, or think about it enough, for the game's horrible flaws to become clear.

There is also a niche contingent of folks who just use it as a modding platform.

/v/ is of contrarian
Skyrim is a good game (on PC)
Kinda like Witcher 3, but with console commands and mod that allow you to do literally anything

The general consensus on the TES games is that if you played Morrowind you will dislike Oblivion and Skyrim because those two were far more generic and simplified when compared.

Skyrim isn't a bad game. It has a decent main quest. The map is gorgeous and fun to explore. But it isn't Morrowind. It doesn't have that other-wordliness to it. Nor it's depth or quality of writing.

That's why people here generally dislike it.

Contrarianism

>>388214092

This

Also, radiant quests. Which only got worse in FO4.
>>
Because /v/ are a bunch of old fuddies that love morrowind and other people who haven't played morrowind are happy to have less when they've never experienced more.
>>
>>388212990
It is unironically a better RPG than Witcher 3.
>>
>>388214450
A better RPG? Maybe, but not a better game as a whole. Not ragging on Skyrim but there's room for improvement.
>>
>>388212990
Most of the people who play Skyrim have never played Morrowind or Oblivion, so they can't tell how bad Skyrim is by comparison.
>>
The game would have been amazing, but it was extremely rushed. The game boils down to dungeon crawling and poorly put-together storylines, and is borderline unplayable without the use of 100+ mods

That being said, the world itself that the game is set in is incredible and very deep and interesting, but it is far out of the scope of Bethesda to create a game that lives up to the world.
>>
>>388214450
That's not hard, any RPG is a better RPG then the Witcher because the Witcher isn't an RPG.
>>
>>388212990
all the elder scrolls games are shit and this one is no exception
>>
>>388212990
It's fantastic when modded, and with the right mods becomes one of the best porn games out there.

Unmodded it's an unstable, unbalanced piece of shit because Bethesda are incapable of good programming or writing.
>>
Given how popular it is (the largest factor in that being the simple fact that video games have become an increasingly popular pastime and Skyrim is relatively recent), it's inevitable that the majority of people who have played it couldn't have played any of the classics, so they simply don't have anything to compare it to.

As to why Skyrim specifically got popular and not some other contemporary game, it's conceptually appealing (being a hero in medieval-esque fantasy North simply appeals to people) and to its credit it does give good first impressions if you don't play it too much and only a couple of hours max in one session. For example, getting out of the tutorial area and having the whole world open before you is something that pretty much everyone likes, and most players never leave this initial high.

However, video game enthusiasts do play it enough to get past first impressions, and they do have enough points of comparison to see cracks appear even before that point. For example, while a guy playing the game in 30min sessions once a week might not be able to keep track of what's happening no matter how well-written a quest might be, an enthusiast quickly despairs to discover that there isn't a single good quest, never mind anything that compares to the best quests they've done in other games. Similarly, the former kind of player is happy to whack things with a sword but an enthusiast has played other games (both action games and RPGs) and will find Skyrim mechanically lacking in comparison.

In general, there isn't a single component of Skyrim that is noteworthy in its quality (nor does it have any underlying factor that makes it greater than the sum of its parts) and some of the components are unquestionably awful (like the UI: it takes an order of magnitude more to do stuff than it could). The one area Skyrim comes closest to being good at is the atmosphere, and that's something you can start absorbing the second you launch the game.
>>
>>388212990
Because the game is accualy good and popular. The problems it has are just ever minor. Hating on it is accually a meme nothing more.

TES is overrated hot garbage. There are people who unironically enjoy those games, but they have shit taste. Go play the new zelda, the witcher 3 or find some other medieval rpg games to play.
>>
>>388216859
Accurate.
>>
>>388212990
The writing was eh and the combat was bland

You can get really absorbed into it by the basics of the RPG dungeon crawling gameplay loop and it can look very pretty
>>
>>388212990
>casuls like it because it's mindless fun
>casuls who think they're hardcore (basically your core """"gamers"""") hate it because it doesn't spoonfeed them a fancy plot like Use Your Witcher Sense 3 does
>Hardcore hate it because it simplified and streamlined a lot of stuff from Morrowind
>Patricians like because of its modding potential
>>
People like it because it's good.

People hate it because it could be far, far better.
>>
>>388214548
it's a actually also a better designed game than Witcher Senses 3.
>>
It's a good game. Sure, it has potential to be better, but that applies to everything in life. /v/ hates it because everyone else praises it
>>
>>388212990
The mainstream likes it because it's very accessible and offers a lot of freedom to the player in terms of where you can go and what you can do.

Hardcore gamers hate it because while accessable it's very very shallow. There is not a great deal of depth:
Quests come down to "Go here and collect/kill this."
Skills don't really matter because your character can eventually max out everything.
You do not make any meaningful decisions in the game.

Additionally when it was released it was a mess of bugs and glitches.
>>
>>388212990
was going to tell you to just buy it yourself and form your own opinion on it. most of beth's games are on sale on steam right now.
but apparently they're really pushing SSE, likely for the mod workshop shit. oldrim isn't on sale.

>Skyrim Special Edition
$19.99 USD (originally $39.99)
>2011 Skyrim + all DLCs
$64.96 USD

you actually can't even find it through searching on the steam store. some good reviewers put links to oldrim's store page at the top of their reviews but otherwise you can't see the game's page through steam unless you already own it. a google search works too but that shouldn't be necessary.
it's scummy as hell that they don't want people buying oldrim considering it's the definitive way to play until SKSE is on SSE.

My first Elder Scrolls game was Daggerfall back in 97' and have been a fan ever since, i honestly don't understand the hate for Skyrim, there's nothing shot about it, i mean yeah the series has gone more casual as the games have progressed but it ain't shit

No.

>>388218482
You actually can't realistically max out everything. It's kinda like saying in Dark Souls your stats don't matter because you can eventually max out everything. Leveling up past the original level cap of 81 takes fucking forever.

Surprised there was no fpbp. You hit the nail on the head.
>>
>>388212990
It's pretty fundamentally bad. It's fun sometimes because it's quite immersive, you can just walk around and explore and that can be an enjoyable time. But the quests are boring (only good questline is Dark Brotherhood), the writing is pretty shit, and the thing you spend the most of your time doing, the combat, is some of the most shallow I've ever seen in a game.
>>
>>388220604
What's going on in that pic
>>
>>388212990
If you need an unpaid fanbase to make your game good, then it's a shit game.

Every defense of Skyrim begins with "muh mods", and many don't remember it was practically unplayable on consoles for the first year.
>>
I don't think it's a bad game, it's just not very deep, and as an RPG it's certainly lacking. The absence of stats greatly contributes to that, as well as the numerous boring quests. You should try playing through the main game once, then mod the hell out of it
>>

Your favorite will always be the first one you played. Going back to older games is harder, and the follow ups will always let you down.

All the dragon dorks will hate ESVI.
