Why is DDR4 memory still so fucking expensive? I was planning

Why is DDR4 memory still so fucking expensive? I was planning on building a new PC and the fucking 32GB kit cost the same as the CPU.
>>
so long as there are people to trick why not take advantage of it lol
>>
>>388209570
>tfw building mostly new computer but unsure if the 970 I'm taking out my old rig got some static shock into it yesterday while putting it in it's static bag

I'm terrified of building it once I get home for this lone reason.
>>
>>388209570
Because memory manufactureres (Samsung, SK Hynix, Micron) formed a fucking cartel. That and fucking phones.
>>
holy shit the ram i paid $184.26 now costs $339.99
>>
>>388209689
get a static wristband then
>>
>>388209570
You dont need 32GB.

Beearly anything uses more than 8 gb of ram.
But it helps to have 16 gb of just in case of rare above 8 gb of ram usage situations.
99% of games work just fine on 8 GB
At beast you may eliminate an occasional stutter and maybe get 85 fps instead of 82 fps when plying some games.

32 gb of ram is only useful for work stations like 3d modeling video editing etc.
>>
16gb ram minimum.
>>
>>388209962
I usually build a new PC every 5 years or so, it needs to be future proof.
>>
>>388209570
There is a price hike going on with hardware due to the bitcoin mining fever and also the fact mobile phone manufacturers are massively switching over from DDR3 to DDR4, so there is actually a global shortage of RAM.

So yeah anon, I feel your pain, built a pc a month ago, couldn't believe how expensive this new shit was.

Like, last time I built a PC was fkin 2012, the rule of thumb back then was RAM was dirt cheap.

Now I got 16gb of your pic related, I think it was about 160€ - looking at the price now from the same website its about 152€

So I guess prices are falling slowly now, they've been on the rise for a year before I think.
>>
My next new PC build is going to be this Christmas so I'm hoping the prices will fall even a little bit by then. Gonna go Ryzen with a 1080 up from my humble i5 2500k/Sapphire R9 290X
>>
>>388209570
Now is the worst time to build a new PC
>>
>>388209689
don't think about it too much
people are overly delicate with this shit, I've left gpus sitting on shelves for years and just popped em back in. shit just werks.
>>
>>388210348
>tfw didn't fall for the skylake meme

ahh, feels good.
>>
>>388209689
Place your elbows/forearms on the computer case while removing/adding parts. This prevents excess static.
>>
Is PNY a good GPU brand or should I pay a little more for something else like MSI?
>>
>>388210103
In the future there will be DDr5 memory and ddr4 will probably be cheap.
By the time you need to upgrade from 16 to 32 gb of ram you will probably buy a new PC.
>>
>>388211412
What card you getting?

It's this one by the way, not the reference one.
>>
>>388211969
If you're buying FE, brand doesn't matter, if you're buying a non reference design it's probably worth doing more research into the differences yourself
>>
OP you're fucked
>Building a PC at this current time
>$200 GPUs now cost $400
>NVidia cards about to go out of stock because of AyyMDfags waiting™ for overpriced cards
>Mining
>>
>>388212185
tbqhwy you should be fine, just look at benchmarks of the thing and compare it to similarly priced models
>>
>>388209570
it's made exclusively to rip you off - nothing else.
>>
>>388212456
I could wait but for how long?
>>
>>388212613
I was more worried about reliability, I never bought a PNY card before so I don't know if it's a reliable brand, they certainly are cheap.
>>
>>388209689
that's why a pro builder always discharges electricity by touching a metal object and build their PC naked.
>>
>>388210103
but RAM is the easiest thing to upgrade at any moment in the future once any relevant program will ask for more. Just make sure to have extra slots on your motherboard.
>>
>>388212718
Mining isn't going anywhere for quite a while.
If you're talking about AyyMD, then wait™ until Monday, and you better be prepared. Vega 64 wasn't too impressive, but it sold out in seconds.
>>
>>388212835
Haven't heard anyone having issues with PNY stuff, quick google search backs that up, you should be fine
>>
>>388210103
Damn you're dumb, where's the future proofing if ddr4 will be more than obsolete when 32 gb is needed?
It will be ddr 5 by the time 16gb is the standard, and 32?
And even more so when you're complaining it's expensive?

Seriously, anyone saying the phrase "future proof" when talking about building a pc doesn't know what he's talking about, whether it's about a cpu, ram, or gpu.
>>
>>388213137
>Seriously, anyone saying the phrase "future proof" when talking about building a pc doesn't know what he's talking about, whether it's about a cpu, ram, or gpu.

not him but I got my 4690k in 2014 and it's still banging fine at top level without any issues today. and people have been milking the 2500k/2600k for more than half a fucking decade now. so at the very least a CPU can be future proof

but I don't agree with paying for 32gb, 12/16gb should be the fine mark for gaming. 8gb is not enough anymore especially if you don't store loli porn and made the jump to telemetry 10
>>
>>388209570
Not sure you gotta rock 32GBs, 16 will do you good and if you need more later on than adding another 16 will still work just fine.
>>
>>388213806
I've got 16gb and I've literally never used more than 10
>>
Is DDR4 more efficient than DDR3?
>>
>>388213981
Yes, 1 more efficient.
>>
>>388213981
What do you mean by "efficient"?
>>
>>388213981
The differences are insignificant for 90% of practical applications, same goes for your ram timing and overall speed.

The only time ram will bottleneck you is if you run out.

What the fuck?

It's DDR3-1600.

Probably going to wait till Black Friday and see what deals are available.

Should I get 2x4 DDR3-1600 to add onto what I already have or 2x8 DDR3-2000?

I guess if all you do with a computer is play video games that's fine.

Floods in west Asia ruined memory factories. That's also why AMD can't keep up with the demand for their GPUs from both miners and gaymers.
>>
>>388209570
Supply and demand, dumbo
>>
The memory cartel demands it.
>>
>memory doubled in price
How the fuck, I was waiting for it to get below a certain threshold before I bought 128gb and now it's infuckingpossible.
>>
>>388214362
>Floods in west Asia ruined memory factories

Why not make factories in areas without floods? Every time there's a flood in Asia a PC component gets expensive, a few years back it happened with hard drives.
>>
>>388214775
Cheap labor.
>>
>>388214315
>96GB

Explain this, I've never seen anything bigger than 8GB, let alone 12GB at that.
>>

I built 3 of my friends PCs naked aside from shoes. its a good strategy.

Server ECC memory.
>>
>>388209570
DRAM and NAND generally use the same fabs.
Both are in huge demand from everything right now, especially GDDR5 (for obvious reasons)
But also NAND from phones and other insatiable government buyers (apparently metadata collection is hard and needs fast storage!)
>>
>>388215207
Why shoes?
>>

RDIMM.

>>
>>388215308
grounding purposes
>>
>>388215308
because my carpet creates a lot of static electricity when in socks/barefoot.
>>
>>388215120
4x8GB+4x16GB.
Registered ECC DDR3 was available in 16GB
>>
>>388215412
or yeah - that.
In fact, wearing the polymer shoes will exclude any possibility for electricity going into the ground and back
>>
No idea. Been waiting for those go down in price so i can finally build new pc. Probably pointless to get new mobo with ddr3 at this point.
>>
>>388215586
You might wait years.
