If Volve wants to, they can kill Dota. If you are stuck with the HOHO HAHA patch for two years, you will kill it.

stop talking like an idiot. selling a game for $x is monetizing it. releasing a game for free and funding further development through microtransactions is also monetizing it. one is designed for a single release and no updates post launch whereas the other is designed for long term development of a game. tf2 would not have a sizable playerbase today if it had not received further development, and it would not have gotten further development if it was not commercially viable. that is the reality of the situation. basically every multiplayer shooter before tf2 would die a year or two after release unless it was something like quake which had that niche core of hardcore fans- and you don't really want an audience of less than a thousand people.

you can complain about microtransactions and hats and skins all you want but at least realise that without those then the game would be dead. accept that releasing dota with ALL the heroes free is actually one of the best things valve did for the game and that it isn't as shitty when compared to what other market leaders are doing.
