I just finished this game for the first time today. I probably shouldn't have started on hardcore and the start was really rough on me especially getting one-shotted by everything.

It's a bit more limited than you think. You can only make one dedicated follower named a Pawn, and you have to hire the other 2. However, you could theoretically just make 2 more alternate accounts and have the perfect party set up of your own creations. The character creator is fairly detailed bit it only presets. You can dictate your Pawn's behavior in combat through gaining Knowledge Stars and directly manipulating their Inclinations. These are two pragmatic game mechanics that only the real aughtists follow through with because FUCK GETTING THAT THIRD HYDRA STAR HOLY SHIT. You can technically manipulate your Pawn's stats by having it level up as specifics Vocations for a specific set of levels. Obviously, you can also choose their class except for the Hybrid Vocations which are Arisen (player character) exclusive.

Stats only matter for weapons IMO. For armor, you barely notice the difference especially since you can upgrade everything a fair amount.

I can't blame you. Worst quest, made me dislike Aelinore forever. But at least it had a funny moment.

BBI it's meant for endgame, but you can go as soon as you get your own pawn.
You should at least beat the game first, it get's really good at the end.
Then go to BBI right at the start of NG+. Don't worry, NG+ doesn't increases difficulty and you keep all your items and stats.

After replaying DD for a week or so after a year hiatus, I can confidently say that this is one of the comfiest games ever made.

Dont listen to that guy. I went in at level 20 with the Grand Ingle ring equipped and now I'm level 40 past the first major boss enemy which is the only thing I had to run away from because i literally couldnt damage it fucking large spiky prisoner on Hardmode.
Bitterblack is by far the best part of the game and I love going there at low levels because it makes it even more challenging and even more fun.

Duke's not eager for the news to spread out about Aelinore's possible infidelity, plus the Arisen is needed to deal with the Dragon.

So gameplay reasons aside, it could just be that the Duke kinda sweeps the matter under the rug so that business can continue as usual.

Also a neat thing I discovered. If you have pawn rewards pending from a previous session, and you delete your save or put it elsewhere, and start a new game and rest at the inn after making your pawn, the new pawn will receive all the rewards and knowledge the previous one was supposed to get.

More or less my experience with DDDA, yeah.

Most of the low points of the game were made funner by renting out other people's pawns and making sure they got lots of RC and thinking of appropriate gifts to send back if they performed well.

To be honest, I think I had more fun chatting with people about their pawns and sharing pawns than I did in most direct multiplayer games.
