From 8/v/

It's another cliffhanger.

http://archive.is/8aDmx

>Everyone is devastated by old black man's death

>Alyx sucks it up and insists we go on with his plan

>Resistance travel in force to Antartica, Gordon and Alyx get separated from them

>Find Combine base, overseen by Dr Breen

>Breen is now a slug overseer, a backup of his brain taken before his death was implanted in it. He doesn't know how he died and eventually he decides he hates his life and asks Alyx and Gordon to kill him

>Alyx says to leave him to suffer, Gordon may or may not choose to end him

>They rescue female doctor played by Ensign Ro, tension as they sort out whether she was a double or triple agent. Gordon decides to trust her.

>The 3 of them board the Aurora or Borealis or whatever it was called. The ship is bouncing around in time and space, yo-yo-ing between it's launch and arriving in Antartica. On the way it makes brief stops at alien places.

>Big fight outside between Combine and Reistance, the 3 heroes fight their way through the ship, see weird shit and learn the ship's origins.

>Ultimately they have to decide whether to ground it in Antartica (Dr Ro wants this) or to turn it into some kind of quantum missile and fire it at the Combine (Alyx wants this).

>The stand off is resolved when Alyx kills Dr Ro.

>Before the ship can crash into the combine HQ, the G-Man turns up and takes Alyx away with him, but leaves Gordon to die.

>The Vortigaunts instead turn up and save Gordon.

>The ship hits the Combine base but does less damage than they thought (they seemed to think it would wipe the Combine from existence or some shit)

>Gordon is deposited to a familiar place many, many years after he was last there, with a new resistance and science team, so far in the future that everyone he knew previously is dead.

Really makes you think.

Not only that, but the big picture is that we would never ever beat the Combine, they have a universal empire spanning trillions upon trillions of stars and planets.

It's one of the last things Gordon sees before being snatched away

You'd have run around a snowy wasteland and linear corridors for a few hours with long MGS-tier pacing killer forced cutscenes between the "action" of shooting the same three different types of Combine soldiers you have for the previous three games until you reached the ultimately unsatisfactory and pointless cliffhanger ending. Also you still don't really learn shit about the G-Man.
>>
>>388181503
>they have a universal empire spanning trillions upon trillions of stars and planets.
That wasn't in the actual script at all. All it said was that the nexus was a lot of much greater size than the ship.

The combine are pretty shitty, their soldiers suck and despite defeating Earth (it probably fell because of traitors like Breen), they had a very tenuous hold on their colony despite the technology gap.

They have a Dyson sphere. The sheer scope of that says a lot about the size and technological strength of their empire.
>>
>>388181712

>much greater size than the ship

An immense light blazed. I caught a cosmic view of a brilliantly glittering Dyson sphere.

Again, trillions of planets and stars. They wouldn't even register the explosion of the Borealis.

>he vastness of the Combine’s power, the futility of our struggle, blossomed briefly in my awareness. I saw everything. Mainly I saw how the Borealis, our most powerful weapon, would register as less than a fizzling matchhead as it blew itself apart.

the borealis was constructed by the same people who built the portal gun. the portal gun allowed you to connect one physical space to a completely separate physical space. the borealis allowed you to teleport anywhere in time and space unconstrained by physical space. according to the story, when the combine invasion began the scientists aboard the borealis activated it to avoid the combine obtaining their technology. it was activated without being finished which is why it's bouncing in and out of existence.
>>
>>388182767

tl;dr
In 2010 Gabe was the most loved, respected, admired, and looked up to man in the video game industry. Valve was everyone's favorite publisher and one of most peoples' top 5 favorite developers too. Valve had hundreds of developers so they consistently put out a new high quality title every single year, and even shit that seemed rushed, like L4D2 and Portal 2, was still very high quality and considered to be great (even if nowhere near GOTY material) by most people that played them.
Then they added crates to the game. At first, hats were f2p cosmetics and everyone loved when new hats got added to TF2 because it was usually just a fun little bonus aesthetic item to throw on a character. Then in the second half of 2010, Valve decided to use it to make money via supply crates. The result was a massive success, beyond their expectations.
At the very same time, Steam was getting bigger and bigger. PC gaming was beginning to thrive once again for the first time since the early 2000s / late 90s, and Valve essentially had the monopoly on distribution services / social services because they were the only ones that put any effort into it. Suddenly, steam itself and the cuts they made from games were making more than any game release of theirs.
Then CSGO struck gold.
Then the steammarketplace was added, and Valve could rake in money off of people TRADING using their platform.
Then Dota 2 officially launched, and again, struck gold.

Suddenly Valve was making tens if not hundreds of millions a year literally just sitting on 3 games and their distribution platform. So for them, it's a waste of money to do anything else. Except add a card game, because there's room for that to make a shit ton too.

Valve got really lucky by hitting 2 blue ocean markets (Steam / TF2) and 2 franchises people are overly attached to (CS / Dota). So now they're fucking lazy and won't even just bury their SP franchise by finishing ONE game, giving it to modders, or selling the IP.

Everyone seems to forget that the last paragraph is Laidlaw talking about Valve itself.

>And here we are. I spoke of my return to this shore. It has been a circuitous path to lands I once knew, and surprising to see how much the terrain has changed. Enough time has passed that few remember me, or what I was saying when last I spoke, or what precisely we hoped to accomplish. At this point, the resistance will have failed or succeeded, no thanks to me. Old friends have been silenced, or fallen by the wayside. I no longer know or recognize most members of the research team, though I believe the spirit of rebellion still persists. I expect you know better than I the appropriate course of action, and I leave you to it. Except no further correspondence from me regarding these matters; this is my final epistle.

Half-life fans are the Julian Lennon to Valve's John Lennon, while their new demographic is Sean Lennon. Treated poorly and ignored, while the new son is showered with love. Meanwhile the father is showered with praise over "what a great person he is".

Gman has played literally all of the major characters. Everything is just a part of his plan. The vortigaunts have tried to intervene but it seems they aren't as effective as they should be to actually stop Gman
>>
But what about Adrian Shephard?

The point is , although is difficult to explain or understand, is that if a civilization have the power to create a dyson sphere (resources, time, power etc) , it means they really don't need to create the dyson sphere.
>>
>>388195354
They can make portals, but with XEN fee
>>
>>388195429
A black hole sphere, supplying their core civilization maybe in another galaxy. Maybe they only used Dyson spheres for their primal and barbaric outposts in far reaches, as you would use an electrical outlet at home but a battery in your flashlight out hiking

except the Combine have a fetish for assimilating other species and turning them into Combine, that's the rason why their army is so fucking humongus in the first place, so even if they don't have the Borealis they'll still milk the Earth for all its worth, there's no way we're getting off the hook so easily, especially after ruining their plans/killing so many of them.
>>
>>388196014
>>388195885
In order to give the humans at least a minuscule chance to win you need to make the Combine civilization actually defeatable.
Making it to be a single Dyson sphere and making it to be the -only- vital energy source is the only plausible way to defeat such a civilization.

If there is no hope to win at all then there is no point in making a game, it would be stupid.
>>
>>388196404
that's why Gman keeps moving Gordon through time, so he can destroy vital resources for the Combine, first Xen and its portals, then the Borealis, maybe in HL3 Gordon is sent 1000 years in the future where a new resistance actually has a chance to win, dunno, not that its gonna happen anyway
>>
>>388196404
One solution could be to close our dimension to them, or at least hide it indefinitely, like all dimensions are grains of sand in a desert, and we/Freeman manages to scramble a large part of the sand around our grain of sand and the Combine can't possibly find us again in a very long time. In that time we can prepare, a bit á la the original Independence Day ending.

So you think it would be easier to fuck around with our entire plane of existence, than to physically destroy a physical structure?
>>
>>388182232
Imagine a star totally covered by solar panels.

Now imagine how much power that generates

Okay, imagine how much time and resources it would take to build a thing

A civilization capable of fully harnessing their own or another star's entire energy output is not something "we" should fuck with.

No but a universe spanning civilization. It could be as simple as sending out some quantum energy pulse scrambling our plane of existance ID or something. I'm no professor but it's literally a video game where headcrabs pops out of portals appearing randomly everywhere. It'd make sense to keep going with the portal/dimensions theme and not just a cliche lol 9/11 Dyson explosion reference all baddies magically died.
>>
>>388197052
the bad guys came to earth specifically because of that time and space traveling technology

Using it to prevent its creation seems kinda moot since you'd still attract the bad guys anyway

No but exploding the baddies and then winning is an incredibly old and tiresome trope, as in Star Wars, Independence Day (movies I kniow but you should get my point), Halo, Metro 2033, The Evil Within, Aliens vs Predator 2, Wolfenstein the New Order (from the top of my head) and what not. It's silly to have the mere humans that are literally ants to their civilization just defeat them. It would be more plausible to have the humans hide away and evolve to a similair scale of civilization over a long long stretch of time. Or something else, but please not just 'go blow the baddies away'.

What the fuck even is the long wall of text in the sticky's pastebin? Not in what it means, but as in what way was it released? Is it a press statement? A leak of an already written ending? Is it a confirmation that a game is coming? Or a confirmation that no game is coming?
I know /v/ shouldn't be my primary source of news, but after an hour of scrolling through the sticky I still can't tell. This is truly the worst board.

For one thing I know that everyone of my friends who actually played HL1 before HL2 (not many I tell you) thought HL1 was way better than HL2. Myself I thought HL2 was kind of meh from the go, as I associated all the black mesa environments with Half Life so much, and HL2 felt off and not really Half Life. It felt like a whole other game, a whole other story that just happened to have some of the characters and a few enemies in common. The closest comparison I can make is Halo - Halo 3 as HL1 and Halo 4 and onwards as HL2
>>
So, basically the writer (one of the writers?) of hl and hl2 wrote what he thinks hl2 ep3 should be.
But he's self employed since 2016, he has nothing to do with valve now.
Why are people going insane about this? It's basically fan fiction.
The chances are the same as before (basically 0 given the actual state of valve)
>>
>>388198194
It was a plot synopsis posted on the blog of the lead writer of the Half-Life series.
He's not been part of valve for a few years now.
It's basically a send-off to fans waiting for Episode 3.

If you had read the full thing you'd know that that was G-Mans way of showing it up to Freeman. Gordon did escape from him and start doing his own thing, which G-Man would obviously dislike. He grabs Alyx to show how unimportant Gordon is in the end.
>>
>>388198291
We're assuming that the writer wrote what was going to be hl3's plot
It's not fanfiction if he's the actual guy in charge of what is and isn't canon.

Actually I find it amazing.
Think about it, G-man's plan is to give hope to humans. Humans he fucked up by manipulating the test in Black Mesa. He finally leads the resistance to the Borealis. The beacon of hope, the key.

And once you complete your objective, you are left wondering "Now what? How is this going to help us against the combine?"... not only you are left with that question, but with the answer no one wanted to hear: The combine are unstoppable.

We are nothing more than harmless horse riders against a nuclear army. Ants against a gardener.

So... the Borealis... G-man just wanted it destroyed, to avoid the combine to capture it. Someone, in some dimention, managed to discover time travel, and that was their secret. They couldn't let anyone have it.

He doomed earth, humans, the whole dimension, just to stop an inferior race from having their technology. They turned freemen into slaves, just because they were playing with their toys.
