Mecha from Sonic 3& Knuckles will always be my favorite, since he was far more efficient than Metal.

The only times Metal ever got it right was Chaotix / Heroes / OVA Triple Trouble, since he's just there to job otherwise.

It's pretty unfair though. Mecha was used as a distraction and later is part of a almost clever plot to kill Knuckles steal the Emerald after Sonic has left the island (Whether Robotnik told him to do it or not is up to debate).

Poor Metal only ever just pitched against Sonic as his rival so he has to job like hell. It's even part of his motivation for going insane in Heroes.

Metal Sonic is fucking amazing. Say what you will about Sonic, it has some of the absolute best character designs ever created. Sonic himself has a perfect design, and Metal Sonic really doesn't change his design much, but what it does change completely transforms the design from cheerful, confident, heroic, and friendly to cold, unfeeling, and menacing. In all seriousness I'm partial to Rocket Metal Sonic. Not sure why, maybe because he has a fucking rocket attached to his head and was a fun fight in Sonic the Fighters. I also really like the OVA's Metal Sonic. Made the movie awesome even if they ripped the Terminator for his end.

Also you totally didn't include the other fake Sonics: the original Amy Rose, Shadow the Hedgehog, and Silver the Hedgehog. And if you want a copy of a copy: Mephiles the Dark and the Shadow Androids. Oh also the stupid looking Sonic RC Bots from Colors.
