Anyone here who prefers HUB's like in Vampires or Human Revolution, rather than open world?

For me HUB's are the perfect mix of linear and open world. Each area can be tailored to be unique and not rely on massive asset recycling, It's easier to add atmosphere to different hubs. They can be tailored for exploring and detail. and usually cause less AI issues than open world. And does not rely on shitty compressed

Also Vampires thread i guess

Same here I fucking love Hub worlds.

Hubs are literally the god tier of level design. It's like the perfect mix of everything. It's like open world, but without the excessive travelling and emptyness. Hubs are pure kino.

What games have the best Hub worlds /v/?

From my knowledge there is the Spyro the Dragon trilogy. The Lego Star Wars games, Vampire the Masquerade Bloodlines and the newer Dues Ex games.

What other games did Hubs? Why aren't hub worlds done more often?

>What other games did Hubs? Why aren't hub worlds done more often?

because open world is better since it's the latest evolution. But it's only good if you can make it unique and interesting, with clear distinct places. Saints row 2 had a goodly open world map. with lots of unique and cool places and secrets, and then they completely ruined it with SR3 where everything is just bricks and concrete. Played trough just cause 3 the other day and it was a boring repetitive shitfest with auto generated everything.

and for the sake of the thread in general, hub worlds don't need to be 3d either, fallout 1 and 2 are good examples of utilizing hubs to really make you feel like you are moving between different places

Sorry but now, Hub worlds are infinitely better than open worlds. Open world is literally a fucking bad meme, there are likely less than 10 good open world games in existence.

HUB world = high-quality content crammed into small areas

Open world = low-quality content dispersed over large open empty spaces

definitely something to be said for hub world design. Arkham Asylum and Majora's Mask are probably my favourites.

mankind divided had the best hub in a while

I tried replaying it on my PS3 a year ago, what a mess. It's so hard revisiting games from that gen.

I don't think I've been blueballed that hard by a game in a long time. It just ended, I couldn't even believe it, especially based on the review I'd read.

The Division got lot of faults, but I like their mix of hub and open world.

Hubs are great because they support the illusion of a realistic world that exists beyond the boundaries, and that you're just seeing a small slice of. Meanwhile in open world games you have a space that claims to be an entire city/country/continent but in reality is hardly bigger than a small national park. This becomes especially obvious when you look at any GTA game's map and notice that the airport takes up a third of the city, since it has to be realistically sized.
>>
im worried cyberpunk 2077 won't be HUB based since apparently they were looking for programmers to do vehicle and flight mechanics. A Hub area seems to small to operate a flying car in.
>>
>>388183230

If this is hub based it could be one of the greatest games of all time. If it's open world it will highly likely be shit. Unless they finnally expand the open world genre with a full 5 dimensions of freedom map.
>>
>>388183931
it's highly likely it will be shit

games don't take that long to develop
>>
>>388183931

5 dimensions?

This post nails it.

HUB's are amazing because they're small detailed areas that make no attempt at pretending they're bigger than they actually are. They're simply a slice of a much bigger world. Meanwhile most Open World games have entire capitals with a grand total of 20 citizens.
>>
>>388179376
I don't get it. What you're referring to as hubs is just open world on a smaller scale. Bloodlines IS open world, there's just not a lot of that world. All you're really saying in the end is that you're sick of shit world design, well we all are I should think.

I don't know if it counts as hub worlds, but the Stalker games have the best kind of worlds in vidya.
>>
>>388191057
Weren't they open world like new Fallouts?
>>
>>388179760
>Why aren't hub worlds done more often?
Because it takes effort. In 2017 you can make 20 assets, randomly strewn and repeat them endlessly for a few square miles of flat fields, and call it a mainline zelda game.
>>
>>388183230
its gonna take place in night city, the location cyberpunk is based around. it can't be too difficult to make a really detailed open world city if they're just making the one location for the entire game.
>>
>>388182054
It has like 5 hours of decent story dlc
>>
>>388179376
why are you capitalizing hub, it isn't an acronym
>>
>>388190725
That's pretty much the definition its taken on despite being incorrect: very small, very highly detailed open worlds
>>
>>388191109
Yes, and not particularly varied or well designed imo. But atmosphere made exploring it immersive and creepy
>>
>>388179376
If its HUGE and alot of hidden stuff, and has quests and changes with the plot of the game then yes.
>>
>>388191109
>>388191057
SoC is linear but with a couple of hubs like the bar but you're free to backtrack anywhere, storyline progression is linear as you go from south to north (or north to south i dont remember)
CS is pretty linear especially second half of the game
CoP is open world
>>

>I don't get it. What you're referring to as hubs is just open world on a smaller scale. Bloodlines IS open world, there's just not a lot of that world.

Calling Bloodlines Open World is extremely misleading. It's like calling something like Dark Souls Open World.

Yes, it has open areas; but calling these "Open World" is really a stretch. They're big levels that connect and bottleneck you to other levels. You're not so much exploring a big space as you're on a path with lots of forks in the road and side activities on the way.

I prefer hub based, I tried playing multiple open world games when they were getting more popular but it was just always so much time spent travelling and the actual things to do weren't great, with lots of dead space to make the world feel bigger which is useless. I really hated how for a long time "not open world" was a criticism many people were using for games.

Open world games kind of make me think of watching a movie with the scenes out of order.

it's from the trailer, most likely she is a whore, or she was at home changing clothes when she started going berserk due to excessive amount of cybernetics
>>
>>388194381
I'm kind of hoping that we'll get an open world game that is basically every kind of genre in one and it lets you choose what you want to play by going to different areas. We'll need much more powerful hardware and better AI for that though, it probably wouldn't happen anytime soon.
>>
>>388181208
Open world is only as fun as how you get around it, you need either fun movement mechanics or someone way to make the travel engaging, for example the atmosphere and paranoia of STALKER.
>>
>>388194860

hardware aside, i doubt this will never happen just because of the amount of man hours needed to make an open world game as detailed and distinct as a hubworld.

>>
>>388196410
Yeah but AI is starting to do more stuff on its own. It's not entirely on its own but it's getting close to being able to write music on its own. I don't see why it couldn't also design a game on its own eventually, it'll just take a while to get there.
>>
here's a trick question: what's with games like dragon age inquisition or witcher 3? it's several maps without a hub or any other connection

I mean da:i has Haven but that can hardly be called a hub
