I hate the choice.
See I fucking love magic. I insist on playing something semi-magical in just about anything. I could go out and learn to fence or basic archery or whatever in real life. Can't cast any spells though.

Then most games go and make it boring. Half the time it's just "click button, wait 5 seconds, spell is cast, monster dies" and it's awful. Dragon's Dogma was the worst for this.

Staff of Ice sucks because Stun makes the atk spd debuff skill meaningless as the enemy is unable to attack when stunned anyway

Dunno what magic dash is but mov speed is literally useless in most games, so no Staff of Lightning either.

I really like poison damage. It's not an edge thing. I just really fucking like it for some reason. Even if it somehow isn't a DoT. I'll use the 100 damage "poison bolt" over the 120 damage "fireball" every time and I don't know why.

Dragon's Dogma's magic system is both fantastic and awful at the same time. It's the epitome of "press button, wait 5 seconds for spell to cast" but at the same time, your magical arsenal ranges from pissant little fireballs to electric whips and conjuring fucking tornadoes and earthquakes.
Shit, even low-level spells like your basic Ingle still feel satisfying because they've got a real "oomph" to them, and can actually stagger enemies or send them flying. The down-side is the aforementioned long-ass cast times. You're looking at like, 15 seconds or so to cast a Grand-tier Sorcerer spell.

Action games with a heavy combat focus very rarely handle magic classes well. I honestly can't think of one that does it well, though I'm sure I've played a few that have.
I mean it's a pretty specific catagory. I'm not saying magic is never done well. Anything turn based it's fine, anything semi-turn based. If it's not class based and it's something like Witcher where magic is meant to offer utility ontop of swordplay it's great fun. In stuff like Diablo where magic is very similar to just ranged combat with a few extra mechanics tossed in it's fine. See what I'm saying?

I think Dragon's Dogma is the perfect example of what I'm talking about. Sorcerers specifically. Other classes have you running and dodging and leaping. Great fun, great game. Sorcerers have you stand at a safe distance then hold down a button for a good 5ish seconds, and then a tornado or whatever pops up and you win. It's like you're playing a different game. Magic archers or whatever they were called were great though.

I'm not really a big fan of straight-forward destructive magic in games. I much prefer utility-oriented spells and damage-over-time. Dragon's Dogma was really lacking in the latter. Magick Archer was the best class when it came to magic, because the spells were much more involved and each one had situational use. It actually rewarded you for exercising foresight.

If you do decide to give the game another whirl I highly recommend Mystic Knight. You can also use a staff instead of a sword and cast some basic spells (you've got access to most of Mage's basic spells plus some unique MK ones) and you can drop weapon enchantments on your entire group or act like a wall with a specific shield buff. The real point is to have at least one other sorcerer in the party. Then when one of you finishes the incantation the other can piggyback and finish the same spell instantly.

Also if you're on hard mode like you should be, you're spending more time dodging and spamming core skill blasts instead of spells.

honestly the best and it made slogging around in sorcerer for 40 levels to bring my magick attack up worth it. It's great being able to be both a counter tank with the shield or just hang back and lay down 2 enchanted great magic cannons. Easily the most efficient way to fight Ur-Dragon in the game. You just line them up and watch his healthbar drop.

The thing is what kinda game is it? If you're in a easy mmorpg kinda thing fire lets you farm most efficiently. But if you are in a difficult permadeath kinda game, lightning lets you kite enemies so you can kill reliably.

I personally think it's a real shame, because Dragon's Dogma is an awesome game and the combat has a lot of potential, but being a Sorcerer makes me want to kill myself. The payoff is nice, yes, but sitting behind those long casting times time and time again is dreadful. It's a complete opposite to how mobile the other classes are.

It's rough at best, and there are probably better examples, but I really loved the magic system in Magicka. How you can freely cast to your heart's content, as fast as your fingers can input the elements. I also really liked how creative and free-form it is. I felt like a wizard having to think about how to combine the elements to get the stuff I wanted. In the end, though, you tend to stick with those 4-5 overpowered combinations and call it a say, which is a shame, but I still think that system is really cool stuff.

well the faster playstyles usually do more damage do to being able to do more-per-second. its more of a case of whats being fought.
when fighting a bunch of mobs you want the big numbers each attack weapon. sure it only attacks once per the faster weapons three attacks, but it cleaves a mob dead with one hit while the faster wep requires multiple turns to kill something.
meanwhile with a boss the one that gets more attacks in prevails due to the nature of a boss fight. it gets drawn out so the cumulative number of hits adds up. plus the faster one gets more turns so you get to do more with your time, perhaps allowing you to throw a potion or use a buff before getting more attacks in, whereas slow mcbignumbers is far less flexible with what it can be effectively doing each turn.
but yeah balanced rarely works out or shines in any way unless they have a utility (for example the Staff of Fire here does a DoT, and if the DoT is strong enough perhaps its cumulative damage equals the Staff of Ice's numbers while being faster altogether). without a utility its rather pointless and pretty much just exists as a buffer between getting an interesting weapon.
