WoW: Cata's underwater level was amazing. Such a nice change of pace, and the second and third regions of it were aesthetically gorgeous - not to mention that "inside the giant sea creature" region.

It's probably the most ragged on part of cata by tasteless plebs, but they gave enough speed boosts that none of it was tedious.

I liked the one in Banjo Tooie, if only cuz you had 3 different swimming speeds, unlimited oxygen and a submarine transformation available. Music is top tier too.

As a warlock, that shit was essential thanks to all the bugs involving the ship attack script. There were hundreds of corpses around me at the time, while I just swam my way to the appropriate quest givers.

heres my theory to why water levels suck.

when you're on land you can change your position drastically. You can hop you can move left or right, hell slide even.

in water you usually just press A.

And it's not just the lack of movement variety, when you swim its usually just a blub not some crazy leep into the air. its satisfying in a lot of games to see that huge shift and see someone float in the air like that.

That's probably why that water dash in skyward sword feels "alright" at best. it's a basically a jump but in water.

oh another thing, in water you are usually surrounded by enemies. which puts you at a big disadvantage.

on land enemies are going to be in one place usually and thats on the ground. and considering you're able to jump like a flea it puts you at an even greater advantage when you jump over these guys.

While in water most enemies can swim like you or better than you.

Spyro 2 and 3 aren't too bad when it comes to underwater mobility. You can paddle slowly or charge at the speed of fuck and quickly surface too. Only inconvenient is not having your flame attack available (most of the time anyways), but even then you hardly ever find enemies immune to charging underwater.

Does OoT water temple count?

Water levels suck because you lose mobility. The minute a game stops feeling so fluid is the minute you stop having fun.
