Ocarina was the transition. The Spaceworld demo had everyone hype. Toon Link was initially very poorly received, and although opinion has changed the series would have been fine without him.

I wouldn't say intense damage, but ever since he came into play, the games have lost a bit of the edge they used too. At least they brought it back somewhat in BotW and I hope they continue to do so.

How many "adults" bought Majora's Mask for themselves you think? I don't think the industry had that many people with good taste in the 15+ age group, and Zelda was meant to be a brand aimed at a geek niche. Literally. Miyamoto thought it would fail because the puzzles were too complex. People who laud the Spaceworld demo so because it looks like Mortal Kombat which is what they want. And yes you have odd men out like Stephen Totillo who loved the game, but that's like one per ten thousand. It took a long time for its sophistication to be grasped by the modern gamer. And I would say that the guilt and shock of being wrong played a large part in vaulting it to the top of the Gamefaqs Game of the Decade poll in 2010 over all those PS2 games.

My facts are that it looks like a less handsome and slow Link doing battle with a wireframe that uses Igos du Ikana's moves. C'mon, I admit I didn't see it in motion until four years later because I had dial-up at the time, so I may be bias but I doubt it ever looked "good."

He really isn't. His default moveset is pretty sucky since he just hops around too much and his range is appropriately abysmal. The Sand Rod is marginally better, but much like regular Link's Magic Rod doesn't have enough move variety- you're pretty much just going to be using his "bomb everything on his toy choo choo" move.
