Nor should they, stat checks aren't the core of TES. TES is, at its core, about geographic exploration and world building. Obsidian can sure as hell handle world building, but their track record on designing open maps isn't the best.

Fuck no, it isn't just writing but all the RPG elements. The implementation and usage of stats and other systems like faction reputation blow anything Bethesda out of the water.
