I'd like to see a 2D Mario game like it, as I think someone at Nintendo wanted to move forward with 2D Mario games. A game with SMB3 style physics and hand-drawn 2D art would be amazing.

Instead of doing all the regions, make a new region based on Osaka and slap in the westernmost part of Johto on the eastern end of the map. That way you get something new and something old. Maybe add in the ability to visit Johto and Kanto in the post-game.

A pixel Mario game that plays more like the classics with a multitude of characters. None of that New Super Mario shit.
8 worlds, every stage is re-iterations of classic Mario stages/worlds from SMB1, SMB2, SMB2-USA, SMB3, SMW, SML, SML2 and SML3. Maybe some 2D versions of 3D stages like Bob-Omb Battlefield. Character design based on the SM64 game, pic related.

I agree that taking down the fan remake was a dick move though. I don't know if there's a new policy not to do that or if we just have to take it on faith, but it seems like their attitude on fangames has changed, at least.
