With the third hideout, instead of trying to barricade everything you should have one closed room you hedge all your bets on, and if it gets smashed in, utilize the rest of the house as a killroom- moving from room to room, just avoiding the assault. Place traps down the main hallway. broken bottles on the ground (smash glass) will nearly 1 hit KO a hound and do good damage to other creatures. Combine glass + beartrap for a 1 hit KO on most enemies. By hideout 3, you should have a pistol + 5 magazines

The place with all the bug holes? That's not the hideout, that building is just close enough to it that the map updates, it confused me too. The actual hideout is West from there, you'll know it's actually a hideout when you have to light another stove.
