So was previous Quake e-sport spectator style e-sports just a series of gibs as the caster tries to catch up to where the action is?

Quake has such a low time to death that its almost impossible to follow a single player at a time and get a good look at the game. Which makes me wonder how the other games did it. You never get a good look at the skill shots and reactions when your viewing from a floating camera either.
