Man, it's such a shame that AoE 3 campaign is bad. It tried to be AoM campaign but ended up like Assassin Creed plot. At least Asian Dynasties tried to fix this.

Arkantos, Atlantis and just about all that jazz around it is their own making. They simply did their best to make it look like a passable mythical story.

Best campaign with AoE3 in tow. AoEO gets third place because it had a crapload of campaigns and fun missions in it, all strongly a part of that era's history (and covering just about everything really, early Mesopotamia, Ancient Egypt, Celtic migrations and expansions, Sea People invasion, Egyptian conquest of Numibia, Greco-Persian wars, establishment of the Persian empire... I think they only missed out on Alexander and I never got to play the Norse so I have no idea how they actually fit those in). AoE2 and AoE1 just give some basic childre book history text excerpt before throwing you into a bog-standard 90s RTS mission.

Indo Europeans (Celts, Slavs, Germans, Persians, Indians) are the original furries.
You can literally read up on our collective history where the inauguration of a king employed him fucking a mare while the queen kills a stallion to use his cock as a dildo.
After they were done with them, the animals were cooked and served to spread wealth and power to the people. Also, just about everything in mainland Europe used animalistic religions.

I don't think I played AoE except 1 (or 2?) when I got my first computer 15 or so years ago. I want to like RTS but I want something real slow, preferably oriented for solo play, so that I don't suffer zerg rush that end a game in 10 minutes. When I played C&C on the N64 ;_; I remember clearing every corner of the map before attacking the enemy, and the last mission taking 3h or so.
So, is AoE something I'd like? If not, what are the alternatives?

This made me think, I saw a video about Forgotten Empires saying they will try to make AoE:DE campaigns more historically accurate. But what does that mean for AoE2:DE (who took some creative liberties) and AoE3:DE who is at least 75% fictional.
>>
>>388102374
I mostly play AOE 2 as a comp stomp kinda game. It can definitely be played that way just gotta find the difficulty setting for you.

>I want to like RTS but I want something real slow, preferably oriented for solo play, so that I don't suffer zerg rush that end a game in 10 minutes.

You are kind of conflicting yourself. If a gae allows you to build up, a rush (literally abusing someone's weakness of building up) is always an option and one that hands you free wins.

There is no passive play, only games that force you to be agressive by not giving you a chance to build up, Company of Heroes being the most well known and beloved example of this (resources are territory and win condition is tied to a special territory there is always an uneven number of, you can't make anything unless you take territory and thus engage in the game).

But I mean, you can build up in singleplayer all you want. There is no single RTS game that would have AI good enough to dislodge you or make you pay for not playing the game aside form WC3 where the upkeep and hero levels mean you'll get rolled even by Easy AI.
>>
>>388102564
Thanks, I think I played AoE 1 so I might look up 2.

>>388102846
I don't know, I'm not saying it's not a viable strategy but if you can make huge bases why not? And then, the fact that an "army" of ten people could destroy me because I chose to expand instead feels retarded. In a good game, it would be hard to destroy a base with lances, axes or whatever.
Oh well, I can stay out of that genre, it's not like it's the only one out there.
Competitive was a mistake.
>>
>>388102846
One of the reasons RTS genre is so dire these days. With so much potential handed to the player, it is intimidating and hard to get into. People don't want to work and it's a damn shame.

>>388103136
>it would be hard to destroy a base with lances, axes or whatever.

It's just an abstraction. Both Cossacks and Age of Empires 3 has them set fire to the unprotected buildings which is exactly what happens.

A base with no soldiers in it could be set on fire by a single 10 year old kid with matches, let alone 10 angry dudes with armor and torches.
>>
>>388099907
You're right, I'll accept GOG as well.
>>388100984
I was talking about the definitive editions and AoE IV. I have Windows 10 but I refuse to use the Windows Store. I don't even have a Microsoft account.
>>
>>388102374
Not in multiplayer - you're just gonna get outcalculated by tryhards that know when to attack as every civ and rush you at the first convenience.

It's perfectly viable in campaign though. Not every scenario, because some are storytelling maps or unorthodox challenges. Say, you're given 5 units and you need to get them across entire heavily fortified map. Still, those are fun.
Most scenarios allow you to build up and finish the map as you please.
>>
>>388103353
>>388103593
I don't see how casual it is to want something slow-paced, not everything has to be 2-minute matches.
>it is intimidating and hard to get into
>People don't want to work
So yeah you admit it's intimidating but shit on people who'd find it intimidating. I have a job and don't want to spend 100h learning some RTS game so that I can outsmart XXXdeathstalkerXXX in an APM contest.

>>388103890
Thanks for your input, I'll definitely look up AoE2.
>>
>>388103890
>you're just gonna get outcalculated by tryhards that know when to attack as every civ and rush you at the first convenience.

I don't see where the tryhard part comes in.
It's like complaining about a person who knows blocking in a fighting game instead of mashing the controller like you do.
Yes, he will rape your ass, but he did so because he looked into the game's controls unlike you.

I feel the game's AI (at least the HD version) is a tad odd when it comes to the difficulty settings.

The easiest difficulty is a total pushover and might be comfy enough for the anon you were replying to. The second one (i think it's called standard?) seems to pick randomly between trying to attack you or do nothing but the very next difficulty level (moderate I think) advances really fucking fast to castle and knight rushes you to the point I've seen bots that try to imitate online players (like Resonance and Bruteforce) lose to it.

mamelukes are really weak to ranged units and also really expensive

I know it's expensive. Aside from siege weapons and monks I can't think of a unit that costs more gold. I was just wondering if anything could beat it 1v1, even if the results of such a match would not apply to a real battle.

I really hope it isn't set in the 20th century, but I don't know what it could be if it isn't. It's just that there are already so many games set in that era... Age of Empires would no longer be unique.
>>
>>388106495

>>
>>388107683
With the remasters coming up, they either give in to the old joke, make an Empire Earth-like experience with actual budget (since EE was always rather low-key and poor) or say fuck it and make AoE2:Electric Boogaloo, just in 3D, different units and shit like that.

I think you struggle to understand what a monopoly means. If you add a game to steam that used to be exclusive to the win store, there would be no monopoly, since there would be several retailers avaliable.

Steam having monopolies on other games is irrelevant, we were specifically talking about a game exclusive to microsoft. But to answer your shitty attempt at derailing; if all the games exclusive to steam got added to gog and other retailers that would indeed be a good thing.

So what the hell is the 'Definitive Editions' going to be for AoE 1 and 2? And how is it going to be different from AoE 2 HD that was already released and is now on a completely different development path?
>>
>>388111762
Basically, the DEs are remakes done on a new engine with all of what that entails. the HD version of two on the other hand seems to be just an upscaled game mostly built under a 20 years old engine.
>>
>>388108836
Are they gonna unperson the HD edition of 2?
>>
>>388111762
Nostalgia cash grabs that will not be focusing on competitive integrity. Will split the playerbase further between voobly, hd and definitive too. I really hope otherwise, but I can't help but be concerned. The piss poor handling of HD was already evident of that. Now let's make another remake!
>>
>>388112860
>Will split the playerbase further between voobly, hd and definitive

I always want to build big armies but for some reason the game won't allow you to command more than a certain number of units at a time

Cossacks / American Conquest is better
>>
>>388112691
>Basically, the DEs are remakes done on a new engine with all of what that entails.

Not at all. They are literally building AoE:DE on top of the original AoE.
That's why they brought in the old lead programmer to help them navigate the old code.

The game will have an option to change back and forth between the new looks and the old looks just like in that Halo remaster.
