Team Fortress 2 pre-F2P you mean
Also, subjective matter t b h
for me personally a rewarding progression that isn't based on rng.
For me it comes down to two things: the game needs to be both interesting and engaging.
I've quit plenty of interesting games just because they weren't engaging enough, either they were too simple, too easy, or too tedious. Metroid Prime comes to mind, with its auto-lock on feature I didn't find a single encounter difficult and quickly grew bored even though it was interesting exploring the world.
I've also quit plenty of engaging games because they weren't interesting, going back and playing classic games like Donkey Kong Country just feels like I'm treading the same ground without any new surprises in store.
