Wait, "Too much water" was an actual negative point on a legitimate review by a respected game reviewer? I thought it was just a meme.
>>
>>388058319
Probably too much water as in having to spend large amounts of time using surf to traverse the map compared to previous games.
>>
>>388058470
Read the full review. They literally say that they didn't like having to look at water textures.

At least they're being consistent here, I dont see what you're complaining about. Are you just an asshurt /vp/ autist whos upset his favourite got an 8/10 instead of a 10?
Worst review is obviously God Hand
>>
>>388058167
A reviewer said he got lonely while playing Ratchet and Clank.
>>
>>388058319
The real point should have been "poorly designed water segments", but the reviewer was probably brainwashed by Gamefreak's incompetence into believing it's impossible to fix surfing gameplay and the only way to improve it would be to remove the water altogether.
It doesn't really matter that much though, everyone have already played pokemon and know how poorly designed the water is, so they know what the reviewer is saying.
>>
ORAS was a disappointment as a remake though

mainly because it didn't adapt full emerald content, even though HGSS adapted crystal content
>>
>>388058167
Can't speak for the ac game, but ORAS really weren't all that good. 7.8 is too generous.
>>
>>388058659
Did we read the same review? I don't recall them saying this at all.

>>388058167
The water negative isn't only referring to region, but the type as well.

>It’s not a new complaint, but Hoenn is still imbalanced type-wise, heavily favoring water. It’s especially noticeable in Alpha Sapphire, in which Team Aqua (the villains of the piece) use a lot of water types. It feels like there are water Pokémon in nearly every battle, and I have an overleveled Pikachu to show for it.

It's honestly a pretty fair complaint imo, late game RS is filled with water types.
>>
>>388058659

thats as fair as criticizing a game for being brown and grey
>>
>>388058896
this is really the sole image you need to prove that the concept of rating systems is fucking asinine
>>
>>388058907

>>

>>
>>388059408
It does if you have ever played pokemon.
The reviewer probably forgot that there are still people who haven't, or they simply didn't target them.
Anyone who has played pokemon knows what "too much water"means.
>>
>>388058761
>7, 9, 8.5, 5, 8
how does that equals 6?
>>
>>388059471
Even so, the fact that a couple of 8's, a 7, and a 9 get diminished down to a 6 is absolutely bonkers in terms of rating. It's not a perfect game, but it's certainly more deserving of at least an 8 or 7.5.

This meme is basically just used for "I disagree with this review!" now. I remember one guy claimed IGN saying there was too many batmobile segments in Arkham Knight (a valid complaint) was "too much water 2.0". /rant I just want this phrase back for laughing at IGN.
>>
>>388058319
>>388058470
It's not surfing that's the problem, it's the fact that the water is basically a several route long patch of tall grass. If GF made deep and shallow areas to represent safe areas and "tall grass", it would be a lot better.

Okay, I'm a Zelda fan boy and even I think this reviewer needs to be taken behind a shed and shot. I enjoyed Skyward Sword and it was a 6.5 at best.
>>
>>388060035
For some reason most people don't start hating on a Zelda game until at least 6 months after release.
>>
I still don't see how "too much water" is a meme. The shit was complained about for the last ten years, no one liked Hoenn because you spent literal hours fighting Tentacools and Pellipers over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over unless you had tons of repels to avoid encounters, invalidating the point of playing a Pokémon RPG in the first place. Yet, the remake comes out and instead of fixing it, Game freak goes "there's no way to fix this" and then the game actually gets hit with the same criticism it received TEN YEARS AGO, and it becomes a meme for bad reviews?

K

8.8 TP was a way better meme
>>
>>388060162
8.8 was a shit meme because it was used to shit on every game that got a good review score.
>>
>>388059807
That's the correct usage tho, are you retarded or just trolling
>>
>>388059836
But the rating system is ridiculous. Also, I don't see how he can hate the gameplay of LP2 when it's almost exactly the same as it was in LP1.

Also, I'd argue it's the other way around since he gave graphics a higher score rather than gameplay.

>>388059949
With Blighttown and Lost Izalith? I dunno about that. Controls can be a little unresponsive even on PC, especially in a game that requires timing. Don't get me wrong, I love Dark Souls to death (pun unintended). But if the same asshat played Dark Souls he could very well make the same argument and give it a shit score. I'm angry more at the rating system and bias than anything else. If they knew the game was going to be hard, they would get more out of it.
>>
Review scores only exist to please publishers who know gamers are retards who will obsess over the perceived value of a completely arbitrary number that no one can even agree on what its actually a shorthand for.

Let me rephrase, 8. 8 was the best gaming internet experience I've ever had since I was witnessing the meltdown unfold live. It was especially funny with the GC came out with an 8. 9 but Jeff said the Wii version was still better.

I still remember all of the ytmnds or whatever of the review.
>>
>>388060162
I never quite got it either. Pokemon Emerald is even worse, with the final gym and champion focusing on water type pokemon as well. Not to mention the late game Aqua encounters as well. An electric type pokemon basically coasts through the last fourth of the game.

Unity is a great game, post patches. If Ubisoft didn't rush that shit, it would've gotten a better reception and a lot of people would've enjoyed it. But then again, it made them think twice on how to make a good Assassin's Creed game I hope so it might have been a blessing in disguise.
>>
>>388058916
to me it looks like the negatives are more dire in AC, it having poor stealth while being a game revolving around stealth, and they still get the same score. i havnt played unity, though, i couldnt get past a personal perceived drop in quality in the second one and dropped the series entirely. but in the end theyre two very different games, so comparing the scores is pretty retarded, which i think sums up this entire thread

The universal acclaim for this game stills baffles me. None of the demos impressed me at all since it didn't show anything new. It was just another zombie game with some pretty good animations. Not even my friends were interested in it. Then one of my friend buys it out of curiosity since everyone is jerking off to this game and he plays it. As soon as he finishes the game, he calls me and it's like he just saw God. He's like: "Dude, you have to play this, this is going to the history of gaming". I decide to play it and guess what? It's another zombie game. I don't get it. It's a good game, but it really didn't do anything fresh or new to earn all this acclaim.
>>
>>388061312
I mean the aesthetic was nice, but come on. Trudging through lava was pretty annoying in Lost Izalith. And walking across rickety beams and going through the poison swamp in Blighttown was pretty annoying. But it's a love-hate thing I have with those areas. I still love them very much, but I can definitely say that I've had gripes. And Lost Planet 2 is no different for me.

Also, if you're going to add platforming elements into your game, do it right and don't half-ass it. Because that's how it seems to be in almost every Soulsborne game I've played.

Game reviewers value production value over all else. History helps, too. Zelda has mad it this far without any major missteps, so as long as they're well produced, they will always receive spectacular scores because nobody looks at the actual design. It isn't buggy, it isn't broken, so it's well made. That's the mentality they have.

His complaint about the water is in the right general area but he's got the problem wrong. It's not that there's "too much water" but that the water segment goes on for too long. If the water segment was split up into a few different parts throughout the game it wouldn't have been bad but when you haven't played through it before you spend a few hours going through this segment with Pokemon constantly attacking you.

So the problem isn't that there's too much water, but that all the water parts of the game were jam packed together.
>>
>>388065862
It doesn't help that despite water being the most plentiful type, that's still like four or five lengthy routes that all draw from like the same 10 pokemon for encounters.

For Skyward Sword, the reason reviewers gave it a good score is because they actually loved the motion control cancer. Also the pretentious art style plays well with critics.

It was because it was a double whammy. You had the fans who wanted every one of their games to get perfect scores, because they only knew such things. Final Fantasy, for instance, was an expected 10/10 Game of the Month sort of game.

The other was that TP was- at least surface level- what the fans demanded after Wind Waker. For the game that they wanted to get scores lower than the one they considered an affront to humanity, you incited their rage too.

Pic related: THREE reviewers all reviewed Wind Waker in EGM, two 10s and a 9.5, and only one could think of any negatives ("Too much sailing, too easy") and that still only docked a half point.
>>
>>388065862
That's literally the same thing. Please condense what you just said into three words for the synopsis part.

"too much water" is exactly what you would say
>>
>>388058167

Why the fuck isn't "too much water" a legitimate criticism? Just because of the wording? The sailing in Wind Waker is one of the biggest complaints fans have about the game. Too many water areas can hurt the pacing and variety. Considering how fucking archaic Pokemon is they were generous with their cons.
>>
>>388058761
I don't remember having any issues with LP2's level design. About the only valid criticisms I have are the menus and how certain moves felt like there was input delay. Aside from that I still consider it one of the best shooters I ever played.

This reminds me of when the Irate Gamer (remember him?) "reviewed" Tekken 6 but somehow didn't know it was a fighting game and only reviewed the story mode and not the actual, main draw of the game. He said it sucked. When people told him he didn't actually play the game, he went back and edited the review showing the fighting game portion, but still kept in the "Tekken 6 sucks" line.

I played the remastered when I got my ps4. was the first game i tried. I don't understand the hype at all. It's fine but very flawed, and the amazing 11/10 story was perfectly okay.

It did not deserve that much attention. Hell, the best part might have been the multiplayer and that got the least amount of focus.

I didn't have issues either and I could understand the other stuff. I think the guy was expecting gameplay in terms of something like Uncharted or Gears of War (lol) rather than Monster Hunter with guns.

>>388067336
Yeah GFWL was pretty fucking stupid, so I don't feel sorry about that. But literally if they re-released Lost Planet 2, or hell even the entire trilogy (yes even the shitty triquel), in an HD remaster running on 1080p, 60 FPS, and with an ACTUAL multiplayer service that isn't cancer, people would be buying that shit like hotcakes.
>tfw LP2 remaster never
>>
>>388060162
Did people just not buy repels? I mean there was no shortage of money in the earlier Pokemon games.

HM complaint is really valid though.

>people would be buying that shit like hotcakes.

I missed out on those games when they originally came out; wasn't playing too many video games at the time. I would be definitely interested.
>>
>>388068182
The first two were really a cut above the rest. LP1 was really about survival in a post-apocalyptic area that was nothing but snowstorms and blizzards, an atmosphere that not many games delved into back then. And it was amazing. LP2 was literally "fuck it let's go guns blazing" with multiple different biomes to tackle, even the snow biome, killing giant monsters with big mechs and just doing all of this ridiculous shit. You really should try them out. I haven't played the 3rd (nor will I ever) because it's what killed the franchise in the west. But, knock yourself out if you want to try it.
>>
>>388067937
When you have to use repels to ignore encounters for a large amount of the story... Sorry, there's an issue.
>>
>>388068959
That's literally every fucking Pokemon game. Cave levels are a chore to get through without repels yet people only make it a problem in water routes.

(Mainline) Zelda will never get a (near)perfect score again after 8.8
8.8 might've been too generous but that doesn't matter in this thread. The fanboys are rabid lunatics and their reaction was way too much.
Reviewers are too scared now to rate it a bit lower, I mean this thread is about how unreliable professional reviews but still you can't rely on them for Zelda since then.

To be fair, I think the reason why they did this is because they were afraid of backlash considering how vocal and hostile Zelda fans get.

I don't want to hype it up so much so you can be disappointed or anything, but it's a very fun third person shooter series that not many people give it enough credit for. I personally recommend it since the combat, gameplay, and universe is just a lot of fun to get engaged in. But the first two are completely different beasts to contend with, so be careful. The first one is a single player survival action game. The second is a cooperative ridiculously over the top action game. Both are really good, though.

People put WAY to much emphasis on those upside/downside keywords.

Obviously "too much water" sounds silly in isolation, but they explained what they mean by it in gratious detail in the review and it sounded sensible. The keyword is nothing but a reminder

>>388058167
Nothing comes close to God Hand. Even if you think it is overrated it still deserved at least a 5.0 out of 10 I mean for fucks sake a 3.0 IGN? Really? Such scores are suppose to be reserved in actuality for the most broken and buggiest of games. The worst of them getting from a 0-2 of course. God Hand is in no way a broken game. So if they thought it was mediocore a 5.0 is a more appropriate score considering the game is more than functional even on emulator. Me personally I'd rate it somewhere between a 7-8.5 out of 10. If you don't believe me go look up some of the most notoriously broken buggy games of the past and they are the games that get ratings like that. Only a shitposter would say God Hand deserves that. Even if you don't like the game it objectively deserved a better score.
>>
>>388068096
You don't get that the gameplay is more important thing in a game?

Have we found the one guy too stupid for IGN?
>>

>>
why put so much weight on what reviewers have to say? look at some gameplay vids, read a bit about how the game works and decide if you like it or not.

>>
Why do they have 10 numbers on their scale when they only use the top 4 of them? 6 and below is considered bad. You don't need 6 different degrees to describe how bad a game is.

>>388076586
Well that's exactly what the review is for

I chalk up TLOU's success to when it came out. 2013 was a lackluster year, so TLOU stood out. If it came out in 2017 I think it would've got good critical acclaim but overshadowed by better games ala Horizon.

Overall it's a flawed game that has some interesting mechanics and a well presented, but cliche story. A solid 7/10.
>>
Deadly Premonition got 2.0
>>
>>388064360
Even though GameInformer is owned by gamestop I don't think they've ever been inaccurate in their review scores.
>>
>>388077924
Yeah its success it's thanks to the year it was released, I mean, I think the most successful story focused game of the decade was Skyrim so far, didn't it come out earlier than GTA V? That obviously helped it too.
>>
>>388078754
Yeah, 2013 GTA V and BI were the only other "big" AAA titles I can remember from that yeah other than the obligatory yearly stuff like CoD.

Skyrim was successful because it was normie's first RPG and it was marketed well. Even people on /v/, as jaded as they were because of Oblivion, got sucked onto Todd's hype train.
>>
>>388078954
You see that mountain?
>>
>>388058761
Shouldn't this be 7.5?
>>
>>388061709
i think it's because the ad campaign got people really excited and, since it was a mediocre time for games, the pretty average story stood out to people as some masterpiece of sorts.

it's not a terrible game but it's nowhere near one of the best of all time, anyone who says otherwise should fuck off.
