No JRPGs on my radar at the moment, although I'm debating whether or not Zodiac Age is worth my time since I thought vanilla 12 was kind of okay.

Not that poster, but I think there was a lot to like in FFX. I always really liked Spira in terms of lore and what not. Plus aesthetically, beach/island retrofuture rpg is something at least different from usual medieval world.

Plus it has one of the best turn based combat systems in any jrpg imo. It's fast and fun and adaptable.

But yeah, most of the characters suck ass, voice acting is bad, the story makes no sense, and there's weird difficulty spikes and lulls all over the place.
>>
>>388056371
You can like the third if you want to dude, I just prefer the fifths job system over the third
>>
>>388056515
I think the combat system has an intersting concept but is terribly implemented. It's practically designed for puzzle bosses like Yunalesca but instead it's almost entirely used for tank and spank. The early game has that shit where you're basically forced to use certain characters. The sphere grid is illusion of choice garbage. The actual abilities aren't that intersting and you'll spend nearly the entire game mashing attack.

Spira itself is ok but the aesthetic they chose for the people and towns is pretty shitty imo. Everyone dresses like a cross between a leather club and a beach goer.

I still think FFX is a good game, but it's one of the worst FFs to me.

>>
>>388056838
Forgot to mention what I'm looking forward for:
Strange journey
Etrian oddysey v

>>
>>388056739
That's fair, I've always hated the sphere grid as well. I would have been so much happier with just point allotment or even random upgrades. And I didn't mind the general populaces outfits so much when I was younger. But now as I'm older I realize just how "Nomura" everyone's outfits are.

I have a bunch of nostalgia for it, so I'm blinded. But I can definitely agree it's far from perfect and probably not even a "great" game.

Every day I live with the hope that Square Enix will put the KH series on PC, but until then I just hope FFXV is a better game than it looks. I don't like how you can just hold the attack button and let the game do the work.
>>
>>388056739
>The actual abilities aren't that intersting and you'll spend nearly the entire game mashing attack.

Like almost every FF game.
>>
>>388057000
Was it one of your first? I don't really have any nostalgia for it.
>>
>>388057235
I agree, but if you're going to claim you're the best system in the series you better do something special. I think even FF4 has a better battle system than 10 and 5 blows it out of the water.
>>
>>388057256
Yeah it was. I played 7 for a very short time, and then my sister lost it I think. I skipped 8 and 9 and then played 10 and loved it at a time when I thought Nomura designs were cool. I played the remake again recently. It's fine. But I have no desire to go back besides for the sound track which I still very much love
>>

>Every day I live with the hope that Square Enix will put the KH series on PC, but until then I just hope FFXV is a better game than it looks. I don't like how you can just hold the attack button and let the game do the work.
XV fucking sucks, and why not just emulate KH games?

I'm not kidding, it fucking sucks.
>>
>>388057467
Fair enough. I played FF1 as a wee lad and ff7 when I was around 10 so 10 has no real nostalgia for me. On the other hand I'm replaying FF1 as I type this and I definitely overrate the shit out of that game.

Concept of the Sphere grid was fine, shame Expert grid wasn't available until International/PAL to avoid the character railroading.

What really killed it for me was the postgame sphere grinding.
>>
>>388057829
It's like I said. FF10 had good ideas and shitty execution.
>>
>>388057735
Man I tried to play through one last summer. I made it to the like fourth city I think and got fed up with all the grinding I felt like I had to do to stay afloat. Unless I was just bad. But I can respect your nostalgia rating. Everyone has a few.
>>
>>388057829
It just felt....unnecessary to me? At the end of the day it was just a skill tree with some neat cross classing ideas. Why do I have to scroll around this big ass map full of circles, when I could just been looking at one singular skill/stat boost tree?

Again to each their own. But that's just how I felt. I prefer a more straight forward approach rather then some new innovation on a concept I don't feel needs innovating on
>>
>>388058092
No you definitely have to grind. I like the older games because they feel like an adventure. FF10 felt like a sightseeing tour. Although interestingly enough I didn't hate FF13, but I think that's because I enjoyed the battle system and FF12 kind of gave me the whole sense of adventure thing just before that.

Special mention to Lunar and Lunar 2.
>>
>>388058465
How do you feel about Grandia?
>>
>>388058279
>>388058279
Ahh there's the big difference. I don't mind kind of being shepherded along and just being told a story. I like hearing the stories that people come up with. So if a game is just pushing me down hallways I don't particularly mind as long as I feel like whatever is at the end of the hallway is worth it. Not that there's anything wrong with a huge adventure, I like that feeling too, but that's just my two cents.

So you like 12? I missed it too growing up and picked up the Zodiac Age on a friends glowing recommendation. I haven't popped it in yet as I'm still a little burnt out on large RPGS from Persona 5. But it's next on my list I think
>>
>>388058579
Never played it. Is it similar?
>>
>>388058712
People usually put Wild Arms, Grandia, Lunar and Skies of Arcadia together when talking about their favorite games, so I was curious.
>>
>>388058685
I don't hate shepherding if I feel like that's what I signed up for, but when I first played FF10 I was younger and had only played the more open style of rpg. It just felt really shitty. I think I have anti nostalgia for FF10. I remember getting the airship and thinking I'd be able to fly around exploring spira and then realizing it was just a menu. I was a sad kid.

12 is really solid if you don't mind a more political plot and like side quests. How was P5? I played 3 and 4. I enjoyed 3 more than 4 but both were good.
>>
>>388058712
The combat system is a bit different but it's still turn-based. Pretty traditional jrpgs done very well, like Lunar and Wild Arms. The first two Grandias are top genre entries. They were made by Game Arts just like Lunar.
>>
>>388058852
>>388058993
Ah. I really need to get around to playing all the PS1 and PS2 games I missed out on as a kid.

I wish Wild Arms was still a thing. I love the mix of western and fantasy worlds.
>>
>>388058919
Good point lol. I had no concept of what an open world final fantasy could be. So I was fine with the airship. Nostalgia hate is definitely a thing.

I'm not super huge on side quests, but I do enjoy a politically charged plot. So I'm in, I'll give it a go once I'm done with my current roster of games. Thanks

And I think 5 is a improvement on 3 and 4 in all the ways that don't matter to me personally. It's my least favorite between 3, 4, and 5. I felt like the story, characters, and pacing in 5 were all much worse than in the previous two. Especially the pacing. I won't go into details in case you feel like playing it but I had a big problem with how the game delivered its key story elements.

That being said it's still a great ass game that I recommend, the sound track is a really nice acid jazzy vibe that's really chill when it needs to be, and very hype when the story calls for it. And the overall gameplay/quality of life improvements are leagues ahead of 3 and 4. It actually feels fun to play. And the story and characters aren't bad, just not as good to me as 3 or 4.
>>
>>388059587
Alright, I'll give it a shot then.
>>
>>388058919
>I remember getting the airship and thinking I'd be able to fly around exploring spira and then realizing it was just a menu. I was a sad kid.
FFX killed overworlds.
Now we just get linked maps and zones.

What worries me is how this change seemed to affect the entire genre at the same time.

I love and hate a lot of things about FFX. My main problem with it is how set each character was in their roles, and how few useful moves each had. And yes, I know you can use the Sphere Grid to make em all OP monsters.

I think if you made a new game with a similar engine, but tweaked it so that there's more creative queue manipulation, field positioning, a repertoire of status effects, and an overall sense of unique possibility within each character's turn, it could be the greatest turn-based battle system ever. But as it is, it's just not very deep.

I also think they should have spent more time explaining the mechanics of the fictional world of Spira, and less just bitching to Tidus to to shit which he does anyway.

>why not just emulate the KH games
Because the emulated version don't have some of the model improvements, the higher res 2D art assets, and the remastered soundtrack. Plus emulation doesn't really help with 0.2: A Fragmentary Passage.

Is there anything GOOD about XV? Or rather, what exactly were your issues with XV?

It was an attempt at removing the constant Attack spamming/X mashing. Something the genre as a whole gets shit on for.

It didn't remove any player agency, just some burden.

A decent but flawed effort to change that.

Under normal circumstances, no. I would normally list all of major grievances for any game I don't like. But that wasn't the context here. The original person didn't ask a normal question. That's really interesting and all, but completey misses the mark. The syntax wasn't the issue. Everyone understood what was being asked.

XC2 naturally. Also didn't get to play SJ/RH so I'm looking forward to the remakes. KH3 should be good too. Cautious about FF7R

And everyone dismissed the intent to focus on the syntax. Until I prodded a few after the fact.

Same

If the issue is that sony co-owns the IP and they don't want to do anything with it, why not just let Level 5 have it and keep making games. At the very least the publicity and new fans adds value to their PSN releases of the first two

It's confusing and extremely long with millions of side quests, it's the definition of a hardcore JRPG.

no, XCX was a hardcore jRPG, ability to lower boss difficulty withstanding

>how the fuck is it confusing?
The world is unleveled and the combat system is obtuse. I'm just saying as a first JRPG it's one of the worst picks.

Most aren't even long.
>a bit over a hundred
wew
>>
>>388067189
Look at it this way, it's easy to pick up and there's a lot of varied shit for them to get stuck into. It has combat depth without being overbearing. It's well presented and easy to understand.

As far as entry goes, it's one of the better choices unless you want to strip away as much as possible and give them the most accessible game possible. By then you're probably not even playing a decent JRPG anymore.

Trails in the Sky 3rd was the most impressive JRPG ive played, and I had fairly high expectations for the game. I liked the fairly unique way the game was presented and how every character had their own unique dialogue for specific situations as well. The party itself is how I wanted the party in FFVI to be throughout the entire game, but all the dialogue between them fell apart really fast

The gameplay also felt more refined compared to the other two, and it feels like one of the more re-playable ones of the series because it gets you in pretty fast. It felt like a satisfying conclusion to a 3 game trilogy even with the foreshadowing and call outs to later entries in the series.

Maybe so...especially compared to some of the 100+ hour behemoths of the day, but if you take the time to find all 108 characters and have fun experimenting with different combat parties to find secret attacks, you could easy get 80+ hours out of it. Oh and don't forget the fantastic mini-games.

What's the worst JRPG anons played?

It's probably Star Ocean 5 and Ar Tonelico 3.

You don't particularly need to have played it.

I missed Arc: Twilight of the Spirits from my list. Probably a few other decent ones but that's most of them (or the ones I kept all these years at the very least)
