Meh. Tries hard to be Soulsborne.Gets close but fails in many ways. Enemy variety and animation is almost nonexistent. Late game its hard to tell what enemies are winding up to use, since everything uses similar animation cues.

Anyone who says it's worse than Lords of the Fallen is a buttblasted Souls fan who can't handle other people touching their precious genre. It's a decent game that is worth playing at ~$20 if you're not immature.

Does other games have boss challenges where you get upgraded items for beating them in certain ways? I really like that feature.

Another studio that thinks the original appeal of the souls games was the difficulty.

They just made a game mimics the souls games style mechanically. No charm or personality to it.

Great game, but it's way too short and needs more bosses. It was a genuine surprise how good this game was when LotF was shit with terrible combat.

The third boss fight was fucked. The camera was fucking horrid throughout the second phase.

That boss becomes a piece of cake once you realize the electric floor isn't nearly as dangerous as it should be, its more of a suggestion of where not to go. Makes the third phase of the boss fight a complete joke and unable to hit you. But yeah, you definitely have to deactivate auto lock-on on the options when fighting it.

Lords of the Fallen was literal trash and a bargin bin version of Dark Souls, I got it for "free" from PS+ and I still felt ripped off.

As a result I've had zero interest in the surge and from what I've heard it's not much better.

I literally just got done with the demo, does it actually get faster later on? I even picked the lynx build to start, but it felt fairly slow to me. I can see how later weapons or upgrades might change this, but around launch all of the gameplay videos I saw looked slow as well.

The armor doesn't have as much to do with combat speed as your weapon choice. Using the chainsword is the fastest you'll get early game, but there's faster stuff later and enemies will speed up too.

Yup, even something The One Reborn was more fun than the Black Cerberus fight which is probably the best fight in The Surge. Shame too, since the sci fi aesthetic is neat as fuck.

The Black Cerberus weapon is just a tad bit stronger than the normal giant axe and honestly if you're going to make it broken you'll have had to get to it while using nothing but that one giant "hammer" thing and that can be a real pain in the ass in the earlier levels when the weapon doesn't really deal enough damage to be worth just how excruciatingly slow it is.

I played it for a couple of hours. It's much closer to Lords of the Fallen (read: slow and clunky) than any Souls game, hence the same devs, but the biggest problem imo is the choice for aesthetics. Exoskeletons can be cool, but holy shit do they all look the same to me.

If you can get past that and if you like the combat, then it's for you. Otherwise it's shit

You're trying to play it like a Souls game, which is why it plays like a bad Souls game. You're not meant to just lay into enemies until they die, you're meant to target exposed body parts if you're trying to kill them or target armored body parts if you're trying to get the armor off them.

No, I know how to play the game alright. It's nothing special apart from a selective lock-on and then just do a finisher when you can.

The animations are still laughably slow and not only does your character snap because of the lock-on, some heavy attacks that include jumping have your character float a couple inches above the ground for quite a while. It's much closer to Lords of the Fallen than any Souls.

To be fair the limb targeting system is a novelty that isn't really used well enough as once you have all the blueprints and parts for the armor you want the entire system devolves into "see blue, attack blue" and nothing else.
