It was also my first contact with DQ series, and I didn't like it either, it's just too hard to care about a game without any story or characters with personality. Then I tried DQ VIII and found it a much better experience, pretty much munched it down in marathon sessions.

So yeah, perhaps some other entry in the series would suit you better.

I got this game from goyimstop a year ago but barely played it.

It's meant to be a co-op online game, so there's no actual characters to party up with.
You can fill in your party with bots, but they have no dialogue or anything.

Plot is predictable and arch, with not a whole lot going on for side-quests.
Also a lot of extra content that was downloadable is inaccessible now because servers are long dead.

I haven't played DQ8, but I've played DQ4, 6 and 7 besides 9.
DQ9 is okay, it's a pretty small world and as >>388050216 said it's more like a mini mmo in how it's set up because it was designed for multiplayer.
The lategame balance is fucked and it's extremely grindy if you care about doing postgame things, but you can get through the plot without changing at all beyond initial vocations.
It's okay. It's not great but it's not bad either.

battle system is dq8 but with ffx turn orders (speed stat based). actions happen when right when selected.
1 character cant get multiple turns though. it has to cycle through everyone before it comes back. but you can go last and end up being first next.
tension is gone and replaced with team limit breaks. you get a lot of choices and they're pretty cool.

Yeah, that was pretty annoying. And a lot of the good monsters had abysmal recruit rates. I remember spending hours upon hours to get a Great Dragon. That said, it's still my favorite DQ game. I'm a sucker for the these kinds of stories. Start off as a kid traveling the world with your badass dad, go through a whole bunch of shit and end the game as a badass dad traveling with your own family.
