All better than Unreal. Is MT Frameworks outdated? Sure. That's why it should be upgraded to MT3 instead of abandoned. Where did this meme that Japanese were technologically behind come from? Even the Japanese themselves believed it. They've now all hopped on the Unreal train. An engine that is by no means any better than what anyone else was using.

This even ignores that some of the biggest Western games were by Bethesda, which has an awful outdated engine. Their games are laughably sloppy and behind technologically.

You sacrifice certain things to get that kind of graphical fidelity. What you fail to say is Hellblade plays like utter shit. 9/10 games on the left play like utter shit and focus too much on graphical fidelity and "Press X to Awesome" to have meaningful gameplay.

Probably the biggest problem in japanese games visually is that weird inconsistency in quality of graphics. You can have beautiful vistas but them character models look stiff, some otherwise beautiful nip games have horrid NPC models, some environmental assets look very outdated...

Of course that doesn't really matter in the big picture of things because I don't play games for graphics, but it's still something that's often noticeable.

Jap games often have very clear quality discrepancies between "actors" and "props". Like that coldsteel game, the character look nice with some nice texturework, but props are extremely blocky with N64 textures. I seriously doubt that the textures were made only for 256x256 res, and couldn't use something better for the stronger console versions. I think it has something to do with Japan's habit of supporting old tech for as long as possible. Most Japanese PS4 games are more than likely made for PS3 and Vita as well, so the weaker version is the baseline they are built upon.

That doesn't come from Unreal. Guilty Gear Xrd is made in Unreal, runs smoothly and looks gorgeous. Same with the lastest Dragon Ball fighter game.

The PS4, this year alone, got Yakuza Zero, Nioh, Persona 5, Puyo x2 Tetris, Project Diva Future Tone, Azure Revolution, Resident Evil 7, among others. Of these, only RE7 came to PC, the only noteworthy games PC got this year are ports of games consoles had years prior, like cold steel, nier 2, and some senran game. It's easy to see that PC is not a major platform for Japanese games like everyone else makes it out to be.
