If you want to start with something easy and a quality shmup, pick Touhou. Work your way into Arcade Shmups from there.

Remember to don't go for 1ccs all the time, especially when learning a game. Always use continues so you can be prepared for what lies ahead.

Don't play Ikaruga, Treasure releases are unanimously believed to be total trash by anyone whoa actually likes the genre.

It's a vertical shmup, they're almost never made in 16:9, so the frame is there to add something to the rest of the screen in a 16:9 resolution.

What kind of a controller do you use for shmups? I've heard of people using fighting sticks and shit for them, wondering what's the best choice. Would be interesting to at least try but too bad I'm garbage at fighting games.

I can dig the characters in the anime fighters more, they often have their own thing going and also at least in some of those games every character seems to be having their own unique mechanic to them, which is cool.
