I love how people like you and nearly every single report on this recent meme doesn't mention that this "crossplay" is a Microsoft-led move where you'll need an Xbox account on every platform to log-in in order to crossplay. It's not a neutral solution at all, unlike the crossplay Sony uses and has used for the past 20 years where no one needs to create a Sony account or download a Sony app to do it.

Microsoft can fuck right off with this service. As far as I know PS2 came out in 2000. That's nearly 20 years ago. Sony has done crossplay since the PS2 era.

See, I remember microsoft shitting on crossplay, and even threatening to disallow some multiplats on their platform if they gave any benefits to sony. It's part of why mk9 was such a mess at it's release. Now that they're on the back foot it seems like they're all about being inclusive so the people playing games on their platform aren't left playing alone because who the fuck plays games on an xbone instead of pc or ps4 or even switch.

I mean, unity and cross-platform play universally would be a good thing, don't get me wrong, but I don't think this is done out of the goodness of their heart, I think it's solely a business move on behalf of the xbox division. the PS4 version of minecraft probably sold more copies than the xbone and switch versions combined.

So no, Sony isn't denying crossplay because of competition. PC is obviously a bigger and much more relevant platform than Xbone, if Sony already crossplays with PC why would they do the same to Xbone? They just don't do it because it must be under MS's terms, with the Xbox account and all.
