What's your opinion on western designs?

Design of what? Because A) it's not like all of the "west" follows the same design philosophies, and B) level design, general gameplay design, or character design are not all following the same paths.

I guess by your image you want to talk about character design, and in particular how west is less willing to exaggeration of sexual themes, pandering, idolization etc...

Personally, as an ex-weeboo I'm just completely six of the way Japan does it's tropes. They just bore me. So I think I prefer the more "settled" and grounded designs more typical to west. Hell, even your picture - as far as the costumes go, actually seems more interesting than the original. The faces are another matter, but I'd blame the artist not knowing how to draw rather than some kind of sinister intention.

That said: design is always dictated 70% by talent and only 30% by some kind of design philosophy. And it would be entirely false to claim west has more talent than Japan. There is PLENTY of bad western designs, just as there is plenty of bad eastern.

TLDR: personally prefer western grounded approach to Japans silly exageration, but in the end both sides end up with equal share of shit designs.

Which is a bullshit excuse, because quality of art and models has nothing to do with the size of the studio.
It's mostly 1 3D artist working on a model. The size of the studio does not improve the quality of individual models. See mass effect andromeda for example.

As with anything, I'm okay with it as long as it's done well. I usually don't like to follow the extreme of saying that a design isn't good if it isn't extremely sexy, but there are cases where the design feels purposely bad. My thoughts do align with >>387991731 in preferring grounded western designs, but I'm just as fine with eastern as well. I'm mostly balanced between the two since I usually don't consider the country of origin when looking at a design.
I don't care to discuss fanart.
