I'm enjoying Extella far more than I expected to. It's not a JRPG though. Berseria was a pleasant surprise after Zestiria stunk, and Persona 5 was fantastic. Nier is my favorite for GOTY though. I don't really care for any of the games that rereleased.
Looking forward to Xenoblade 2 and Gust's upcoming stuff.

The difference is that Nier doesn't have the usually happy-go-lucky optimism most JRPGs have in spades. Sure, plenty JRPGs have a similar descent into madness but there's often breaks and comedic relief (like mascot characters which all need to permanently die forever fuck off Bienfu and Morgana).

Nier was a bit cringy at times but I really loved it. Some serious smarts and talent went into that. I almost didn't play it because it was too japan.
